The restaurant Niall made reservations at is beautiful. We sit at a table for two on the deck that overlooks the sea. Candles are lit in the center of the table and soft, romantic singers croon over the speakers. The waitress takes our order and hurries off. "Niall, this is amazing," I say, looking around. All around us, couples are talking and holding hands. "Isn't it?" he says, his eyes glimmering. "My parents come here all the time. They're the ones who suggested coming here." Just then, I spot someone sitting a few tables away from us. I swallow hard. It's Mr. Rodriguez, and he's staring right at me. I glance away nervously. "Are you okay?" Niall asks, looking worried. "Yeah, I'm fine," I reply quickly. No need for Niall to worry about something that might not even need to be worried about. Niall's phone buzzes softly from his pocket. He looks down at it. "It's my mom. I'll be right back." I nod, and he walks away. I'm taking a sip of my water when Mr. Rodriguez sits down in Niall's seat. "Um, can I help you?" I ask, setting my glass down. "Yes, you can," he says swiftly. "If anyone asks, you retract your entire statement." I look at him in shock. "Retract my statement?" I repeat disbelievingly. He nods. "It's the only option. You're the only one who has real proof against my client." He checks his watch. "No," I say flatly. Mr. Rodriguez narrows his eyes at me. "If you know what's good for you, you'll do it. I won't hesitate to come after your family." With that, he smiles pleasantly and stands. "Nice talking to you," he chirps before leaving. What a creep. Niall sits down across from me again. "Who was that?" he asks. "Just uh, a dad of one of my friends," I lie. He nods. "Everything okay with your mom?" I say, changing the subject. "Yeah, she was just calling to let me know they just landed. They're on vacation," Niall tells me. I nod. "Oh." The waitress brings our food- ravioli for me, some three part meal for Niall. "Are you seriously going to eat all that?" I ask, looking at his full plate. He grins. "You underestimate me, Ally," he says, laughing. I laugh too. The rest of dinner, we talk. "Tell me something I don't know about you," he says. I consider this. "I play piano and guitar," I say. "And I can juggle." Niall smiles at me. "Talented," he says. I blush. "I guess so." Niall takes my mind off what Mr. Rodriguez said for the rest of the date, but that night when I'm in bed, it's all I can think about. I can't retract my statement. But I can't let my family get hurt, either. What am I going to do?
