The next day in the courtroom I sit nervously waiting for the verdict. I decided I'm not retracting my statement. Why should I? It's the truth. Finally, the judge appears and sits down, banging her gavel. "Order, please!" she announces grandly. The courtroom goes dead silent. "The state finds Ansley Grace Sidheag guilty of first degree murder," the judge says. The words hit me like a brick. She's going to jail. The judge continues to speak, saying that Ansley will serve 25 to life in prison and that she'll be eligible for parole after 15 years. Ansley will be 32 by then. Suddenly I can't breathe. I look over at her and my parents. Tye is with them. They're all crying. Soon enough, court is over. I try to get to Ansley, but she's led away before I can talk to her. I hurry over to my parents. "Mom," I say quietly. She turns around. "You did this!" she accuses, jabbing her finger at me angrily. Her eyes flash. "You sent your own sister to jail. You tore this family apart." I'm mad now. "I tore the family apart? No, I think Ansley did that when she killed Ava. In comparison, what I just did is nothing." Someone taps on my shoulder, and I whirl around, praying it isn't Mr. Rodriguez. It's not. It's Mrs. Martin. "I will finally be able to sleep at night," she says thankfully, pulling me into a hug. "Hopefully I will be able to also," I say, but I know I won't be able to. I've barely slept at all since Ava was murdered. Mrs. Martin and I walk out of the courtroom and are greeted by what seems like a thousand reporters. I didn't know the case had gotten that much publicity. "Don't talk to them," Mrs. Martin advises me under her breath. I nod. "Ally!" someone screams, shoving a microphone in my face. "How does it feel knowing one of your sisters is dead and another going to jail?" I clench my fists and push through the crowd until I see Niall. "Thank God," he says when he sees me. "I thought maybe you'd have passed out by now. All those people looking at you!" I smile. "Shut up," I say playfully. Niall takes my hand and leads me out of the courthouse. "Zayn was also convicted," he tells me when we're in his car. I sigh. "Should I feel guilty?" I ask. "No!" Niall says vehemently. "They killed somebody, and now they're paying for it. It's only right." I nod and glance out the window. As Niall pulls into the parking lot of camp, I notice everyone sitting there waiting. "Are they waiting for me?" I ask, laughing a little. "Yup," Niall says. I jump out of the car and run over to them. "Ally!" Lacey cries, hugging me. "There you are!" Aubree says. Everyone gathers around me and surrounds me in one huge group hug. When my parents sent me away to camp for the summer, I never imagined it would turn out like this, with these people. But right now, I don't want to be anywhere else. When everyone's gone back to what they were doing before I came and Niall and I are alone, I turn to him. "I want to thank you," I say. "For what?" he asks. "For staying with me this whole, crazy summer," I tell him. "I could say the same to you," he says. And then he kisses me.
