41. A Close Call
Back at camp later that day, I decide to tell Emma. As long as she doesn't say anything, Kat won't know I told her. A small part of me isn't sure if I should tell anyone at all, but I can't keep this to myself. Besides, Niall already knows. I pull out my phone and text Emma. Can you come to our cabin alone? We need to talk. I pull my hair up into a bun as I wait for her. A few minutes later, Emma walks in. "Is everything okay?" she asks. "Your text sounded kind of urgent." I nod and sit down next to her. "It is." I tell her everything I suspect and then sit back and wait for her to reply. She fiddles with her bracelet for a second before saying anything. "I can't believe it," she says finally. "I always knew Kat got jealous very easily but never like this." Does she not believe me? Niall seemed skeptical too when I told him. Why would I lie about something like this? "I'm not lying to you, Emma," I say pleadingly. "Why would I lie about her threatening me?" Emma shrugs. "I never said you were lying." I bite my lip anxiously. "You never said you believed me, either," I snap. Emma stands, her eyes flashing. "Why don't you just go home, Ally?" she says. "This summer would have been a lot less stressful if you never would have showed up in the first place." Something in her tone makes me angry. "You think it was my choice to come to this pathetic camp?" I shout. "My parents made me come here, and later I found out it was because my dad had a brain tumor! So don't make it sound like this is all my fault when I didn't have a say in the matter!" Emma takes a step back. "Your dad?" she whispers. "Is it true?" I clench my fists angrily. "Oh, do you not believe me about that either?" I reply hotly. Emma shakes her head quickly, then turns and nearly flies out the door. I take a deep breath, trying to calm down, but I can't. I grab my car keys from my wristlet and stalk out of the cabin and toward the parking lot. If Emma wants me to go home, fine. I will. I'm almost at the parking lot when a hand grabs my shoulder. I turn around, expecting Emma standing there, wanting to apologize. Instead I see Kat. "Walk with me," she says. "Or else I'll go to the hospital and pay your little boyfriend a visit." I think of Niall laying in the hospital bed, vulnerable, and I fall in step beside her. "I know you tried to tell Emma," Kat whispers. We're nearly at the lake now. "So now you'll pay," she finishes. I stop walking. It's going to be pitch black outside in a matter of minutes. My only option is to run. I start to sprint away but Kat steps in front of me at the last second and I almost plow into her. "You can't run from me," she whispers. She pulls a knife out of her bag and my eyes widen. She's going to kill me right here, I think. Kat holds the knife at my throat. I'm preparing to kick her in the stomach and flee when I hear shouts. "Kat! Let her go!" It sounds like Aubree, Harry, and Louis. Kat looks around, wide-eyed, and stashes the knife back in her bag. "Nothing happened here," she tells me vehemently and runs away. Louis begins to chase after her while Harry and Aubree rush over to me. "Are you okay?" Aubree asks, looking me over. "I'm fine," I say. "Did she hurt you?" Harry asks. "We saw she had a knife. She's crazy." I shake my head. "She didn't hurt me. She would have if you wouldn't have shown up though, I have no doubt." Harry and Aubree walk with me back to my cabin. Once there, I thank them and I'm about to go inside when Louis shows up. "Did you catch her?" I ask him hopefully. "No," Louis says. "She just...disappeared." I nod. "It's fine. I'm sure the police will want to look for her after what happened tonight," Aubree points out. I say goodnight to them and enter the cabin. It's empty. I flop down onto my bed, not bothering to change into pajamas. I fall asleep quickly, but I wake up when I hear the cabin door open. Thinking it's Emma, I sit up and say, "I'm sorry I yelled at you." There's no reply. Then a hand grabs my throat. I gasp for air. Kat's voice says, "You didn't think I'd let you get away that easy, did you?"
