I exited through her window, not wanting to encounter one of her friends on the stairs and accidentally hurt someone she cared about. Mind you, after she told me about the ex-boyfriend I wouldn't be too bothered if I hurt him or his new skank.
With dark thoughts twirling through my mind I wasn't paying attention to where I was heading and ran straight into another vampire. She was obviously expecting the impact though as she stood immobile whereas I fell on my ass.
"Jack," a familiar drawl sounded my name, "aren't you in a hurry tonight! Where have you been for the last few weeks?"
"Eleanor." I nodded in greeting. "I apologise for hitting you, my mind was distracted." I deliberately ignored her question knowing that she wouldn't like the answer, but I had to be polite. You didn't just tell a member of the council to fuck off.
"Evidently. Care to tell me what was distracting you?"
Shit. She wasn't going to let this drop. "Nothing in particular, just day dreaming."
"About your little human friend perhaps?"
Double shit. She knew. How did she know? "No." My answer was curt and I knew from experience to not piss off the council but I didn't know what to say to make it any better.
"Jack, the council are getting concerned with your actions. Humans are for feeding and our interactions with them should be limited to this. They are occasionally fun for a few hours of," she paused to consider how to phrase the next part of her sentence, "shall we say extra-curricular activity, but that is it."
She stared at me through exaggerated eyelashes. "It is clear from your distraction this evening that you are not feeding from this girl. It is also clear from your actions around her that she is aware that you are a vampire." I nodded.
"Jack, the council is concerned. The only reason for allowing a human knowledge of our existence is if you intend to turn them. Are you having a sexual relationship with this girl? Do you wish to turn her into your eternal mate?"
I rolled my eyes at her dated language. The council never had been very in touch with the modern day. "No, we are just friends, I doubt she would be interested in turning either. She is the most alive person I've ever met."
"Well that is a shame. The council does not approve of 'friendships' with humans." She put as much sarcasm as she could muster on the word friendship, as if she could not possibly understand why I wanted to spend time with Scarlet. "I'm afraid we cannot allow it without a view to turning her. Your interaction with this girl will be suspended immediately. Do you understand, Mr Culverhouse?"
"Well that is settled then. Goodbye Jack."
I was left alone, positively seething. The fucking council! Bunch of old-fashioned, out of touch idiots! But I couldn't see Scarlet any more regardless of my opinions. It just wasn't safe for her anymore.
I growled as I got up. I needed something to take the edge off. I was going to go find a pretty blonde thing, have my way with her and then drink her dry.
