I had to rush to make it to my first lecture on time; I had just taken my seat when the lights were dimmed. I had three back to back lectures this morning then labs in the afternoon, it was going to be tough!
I managed to pay attention through the first one and a half but then began to sink rapidly into daydreams. I was awoken from by reverie by a text from Meg asking to meet for lunch. She'd been a complete bitch earlier but I wasn't in any position to lose anyone else from my life, so I agreed.
When I met her in the cafe she greeted me tentatively. She clearly knew she'd been out of order this morning so I decided to forgive her. Our chatter was easy and light and I'd soon forgotten all about the morning and the night before.
"Ooh, I have some exciting news actually! All the halls of residence are having a joint Halloween party at one of the local clubs. Fancy dress, obviously."
She grinned and I grinned back. Meg and I loved fancy dress.
Every night that week I was in Meg's room getting our outfits prepared. Meg was going as a dead cheerleader which involved copious amounts of fake blood and strategic ripping of a cheerleaders outfit. I was going as Rogue from the X-Men. Traditionally a Halloween costume? No. Would I be the only Rogue there? Yes. I made my own costume from some yellow and green material I picked up from the market, and was even dying a real blonde streak in my hair. I had bought an emergency box of hair dye matching as close as possible to my natural colour for the morning after.
As the night of the party arrived, Meg and I were joined by James for the walk into town. This guy was lasting a lot longer than any of her other flings and I hoped she'd keep him for a lot longer, he was a good guy.
We reached the party in full swing and seamlessly moved through the club to find the rest of the group. The costumes ranged from traditional Halloween to some with a bit more artistic licence, but everyone looked great.
We'd been dancing for half an hour when I felt hard arms around my waist and cold breath on my neck.
"I vant to suck yar bloooooood!" a voice I recognised whispered in my ear in what I could only guess was supposed to be an Eastern European accent. I started laughing and turned to see Jack dressed completely normally but sporting a pair of cheap fake fangs, which made me laugh harder.
"Great costume," he said, "you know I like blondes," he added running his fingers through my blonde streak. I batted away his hand with a grin.
"Thanks, but I think yours is lacking a bit!"
"Hey, what do you mean? I've come as a vampire!"
I went to laugh but the sound stuck in my throat. Over Jack's shoulder I saw Mark and Natalya enter. Natalya was dressed in a leather catsuit that showed far too much cleavage (I'm presuming she was aiming for Catwoman). Mark was wearing a tight shirt that was unbuttoned most of the way down, with glitter covering every inch of skin on show. He smiled at someone and I saw the cheap, fake fangs that Jack had worn in jest earlier. He had come as Edward from Twilight.
I looked at Mark then back at Jack who was turning round to follow my line of sight. The difference between the fake vampire and real vampire was startling. When Jack saw what I was looking at he turned back to me and as soon as our eyes met we burst into uncontrollable laughter.
