"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?"
I woke with a start as a shrill voice pierced my eardrums. I wiped the sleep away from my eyes to see Jack, shirtless, holding the door open to Meg.
"What the hell is he doing in your room. At 8am. Naked."
At Meg's last word Jack smiled his most antagonistic, lopsided smile at her. "Hey, I'm not quite naked, but if you like what you see..." his voice trailed off as his hand reached for the fly of his jeans. I'm sure if Meg had been anything less than furious she would have liked what she'd seen. Even in my half-conscious state I couldn't help but admire the perfectly chiselled abs and well-defined pecs.
"Not helping Jack!" I moaned, still not fully awake.
"Oh, so the creep has a name does he?"
"Don't call him that Meg, you don't even know him."
"No I don't, but apparently you two are very well acquainted!" she said pointedly.
"Nothing happened! He just stopped the night because I didn't want to be alone." Instead of being a good friend and picking up on the latter part of my statement, Meg chose to keep her concentration fully on Jack's attire, or lack of.
"Right, so why is he naked then?"
I didn't know the answer to that myself and looked questioningly at Jack who shrugged his shoulders and simply said, "My shirt got wet."
Meg went to speak again but I cut her off. "What do you want Meg, it's too early for a social call so what's up?"
"I've just seen Andy on his way to the gym. He says he came to talk to you last night and I wanted to know how it went. His face looked kind of beat up too. You wouldn't know anything about that I suppose?" Her last words were aimed at Jack, but I answered her anyway.
"No he doesn't! And for your information it did not go well with Andy. Not only was he completely childish about the whole situation, he topped the whole thing off by calling me bloody Scar!"
My voice had risen to a scream by the time I reached the end of my answer. Meg had kept her face stern the whole way through, but upon hearing the word Scar her expression fell right through to sadness.
"Oh babe, you should have said."
"I would have if you'd given me the chance, but instead you just decided to yell at me when you had no clue what was going on."
"I'm so sorry babe, is there anything I can do?"
A deep, unamused voice cut in. "It's fine, I looked after her." Jack'a expression could cut through stone. It was clear from the brewing storm in his eyes that he wasn't happy with Meg. And he still didn't have a shirt on, which was very distracting.
I wasn't feeling particularly happy with Meg myself so I dismissed her with a final curt comment. "Jack's right. I need to get dressed now, I have lectures at 9." I glanced at the door and she got the hint, mumbling an apology as she left.
After she'd gone I closed my eyes tight for a minute or two, fighting back the tears that threatened to come. When I calmed down I looked at Jack, still shirtless, and still very angry.
"I wasn't lying when I said I have lectures. I need to go to soon." I said carefully. I was sure he wouldn't hurt me, he'd promised after all, but seeing a creature that is designed to kill standing so tensely is scary nonetheless. His fists unclenched and his eyes cleared as he replied.
"Do you mind if I hide out from the sun here while you're out? I'd go somewhere else but the mood I'm in right now I think I'd probably kill someone."
What choice did I have?
