After Emeteria disappeared, I began to make my way through the forest, trees burning as I ran past. My emotions were running wild, streaming out of control, crashing through the trees I ran head first into the trunk of a massive oak tree, stumbling backwards into a crevice between two roots of the oak tree, protruding from the ground, waiting to entrap an unsuspecting traveller. I rolled on my side, gasping for breath, my lungs felt as if they had been squeezed so tight they had turned inside out.
As I moved to get to my feet, throat searing from the pain of heavy breathing, a dark shape hovered above my head, wings flapping, tail swishing through the air, its glowing eyes glaring down at me, watching my every move. I glared back at the creature, mouth slowly opening, revelling small, sharp teeth, and a slimy pink tongue. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I know I wasn’t expecting it to start meowing.
“Meow” complained the creature, coming down to land on the ground, beside where I was crouched. “Ember…?” I looked at the cat quizzically, how did it know my name?
“Ember, I am your familiar. Do you not recognise me?” I looked at the creature closer, peering into her eyes, it sounded like a girl. The aqua colour jumped out somewhere in my memory, I had glanced into those eyes so often, there colour so bright and open, gentle and caring. I had cried for so many nights after these eyes had last fallen shut. Her black fur still shone in the light of the moon, glowing with the radiance of many years of careful care and nurturing, obviously she had found someone else now though, no longer my kitten, or the kitten I grew up with. Now with the wings of a dragon and too much time and Events had come between us.
“Oh, don’t be silly Ember, I am still your little Luna, yes I now have wings, but that does not change who I am, besides, you have wings now as well.” I smiled at her, yes, she still was my bossy, gorgeous kitten Luna. The playful light had not left her eyes, and her paws were still the tiny kitten paws they were before she died, ran over by a motorbike ridden by Drake. I had never forgiven him for it, never forgive, never forget, as Drake told me. But now, I could forgive him because I got my little Luna back, my midnight black, winged kitten with her playful aqua eyes.
