“So you’re a God? Like an actual God?” Beth was asking Thor at one side of the conference room. The entire Avengers team had gathered in the room, waiting for Fury to come and update them on the upcoming Loki attack.
“Yes, an actual God. Is this so hard to believe youngling?” Thor replied.
Beth shook her head in disbelief, “Well it’s just that…I’m religious so I’ve believed in one God my entire life and now to find out there’s more than one, and I’m talking to one right now… kinda trippy.”
“Trippy? Why does my Godliness cause you to stumble?” Thor asked, very confused.
Dr. Banner jumped into the conversation, “It’s slang for something that’s confusing, weird, different.” He pulled up a search engine called Urban Dictionary on a small pad in his hands and showed Thor their various definitions of the slang word.
Across the room Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton and Steve Rogers were standing in a group talking. Clint’s sharp eyes saw what the other group was looking at and chuckled to himself. Natasha’s eyes flashed as she heard the group laugh and tensed up.
“What’s wrong Natasha?” Steve Rogers asked, “Ever since Beth came here you’ve been on edge.”
“I don’t trust her,” She replied quickly.
“Why? Don’t you trust Fury’s judgment?” Clint prodded.
“We all know Fury is capable of hiding important information from us so no, I don’t trust him” The fiery redhead answered, “Where did she come from? How did she know Agent Hill was going to be in that alley way? How did she get her powers? What is her past?”
At this Clint smiled gravely, “You of all people should know how bad the past can look Natasha”
Before she could snap back, Tony Stark interrupted their conversation. “Actually I was thinking of those questions myself Ms. Romanov. I however, acted on my suspicions and hacked into Fury’s sealed files.” Tony said.
“Again Tony?” Steve Rogers asked, “Was this really necessary? She seems like a reasonable gir-“
“But a cap on it Cap” Natasha ordered him. Steve was startled to hear that coming from her. “Tell us what you found Stark” She told Tony.
Tony smirked, “Well it seems this little pipsqueak is Canadian. She grew up in Northern Ontario, in a small little town. There’s no record of her in the USA until about a year ago. Also no record of any parents or family members besides what looks like her grandmother who she lived with in Canada. Just before she came to the States, our little Bethy here emptied her grandmother’s bank accounts, stopped into a local hardware store for camping supplies and then didn’t show up on the paper trail until Delaware.”
“Seems like she’s been on the run” Clint remarked.
“That would explain her god awful appearance when she first got here” Natasha said roughly. The group looked at Beth who was explaining something to Thor; her hands waving and her eyes bright. Her long blonde hair was now shimmering in the light. With the sunburn faded, one could see that Beth was a fair-coloured girl with delicate features. She was dressed in a pair of black yoga pants, a dark purple sports bra and a black zip-up sports sweater. A matching purple headband held back her hair. Beth was just about to go workout when Fury had made the announcement to come meet.
“Maybe she ofted the old lady and stole her money” Stark said thoughtfully.
“She doesn’t seem like the type of person that would do that!” Rogers said, defending her.
“Ah but those are always the ones to look out for” Natasha said, staring down Beth. “But you said Canadian? I wonder if Logan knows her”
Before they could make any more guesses, Fury walked into the room and waved everyone to the table. “Thank you all for coming. We wanted to keep everyone up to speed on what we have found so far. The new weapons and jets are completed thanks to Falcon, Agent Hill and the help of Stark. Everything can be ready to go within thirty seconds notice.” Fury started, “Elizabeth’s training has been progressing very well. Her two weeks here has helped her develop her muscle tone and she can now fly in the air for great lengths. Her invisibility power is still being developed as this power drains her energy the most and the quickest.”
Beth nodded in at his words, her face proud but tight. “Dr. Banner and Stark have determined that the slime-like substance that was found in San Francisco has similar properties to that of the tesseract. Now we’ve already confirmed with Thor’s father that the tesseract is still in his possession but that doesn’t mean we’re ruling anything out. Loki could have taken some of the information from the cube before leaving.”
“But that doesn’t explain how Loki is alive, if he IS behind this” Thor jumped in, “He died in my arms, I don’t see how he could resurrect once again” “We’re scanning every face on the planet right now to see if he is alive and on Earth Thor. If he is alive we’ll know.” Fury told the god.
“Director Fury!” The Avengers turned around and looked at one of Fury’s agents point to the screen on his command post. “We’ve found Shang Le’Cheung sir.”
Fury looked over the reports the agent handed him and stroked his goatee thoughtfully, looking at each Avenger carefully. He finally pointed at Steve Rogers and Beth, “You two are going on a mission”
