Midnight was nearing very fast. Zack and I had not reached any form of humanity or anything close to shelter for the two of us. My feet were bruised and I felt like I was going to collapse at any moment. I stopped to try and get my breathing back to a normal level. My chest felt tight as my breathing was very rugged and short.
"Kaitlyn?" Zack turned to look at me. Concern splashed across his face as I held the side of my stomach. I felt queasy as whatever I had eaten last decided to roll over in my stomach. Raising my hand above my head, I lean against the tree. After a few moments of waiting for the food to settle in my stomach, I bent over and hurled straight on the pile of leaves that were only a couple of inches away from my feet. Bare feet. Pulling myself, I notice Zack had moved very quickly from where he stood a few feet away to just behind me. "Are you alright?"
"Uh huh." I nod slowly, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. Staring at the space that I had allowed my sick to fall upon, I wonder how the heck I managed to be sick in the first place?! Oh well, whatever the reason, I'm sure I'm fine now. "How long left?"
"I'm not sure." He rubbed his hand up and down my back, helping to calm my stomach. The trees started to blur in front of me. "Come on, I know where we can rest."
Taking my hand, Zack led me down a hidden path. Not taking note of where I was going, I did notice the fact I could hear the sound of rushing water somewhere in front of us. This made my feet pick up a bit as I imagined my lips touching the water for the sweet sensation of liquid filling my desired need that I haven't had in probably days.
After several moments of walking through pitch black, we came to a clearing. There was a river running along the side of the bank. Letting go of Zack's hand, I jump down to the water and dunk my head in the water. Coming back up, I wipe my face as I let the relief of the water sliding down my throat sink in. Looking up, I notice Zack watching me with deep intensity.
"What?" I speak once my airways were cleared.
"Nothing." He shook his head to get out of his trance. "Just wondering how I managed to kiss someone as beautiful as you."
"I'm not that beautiful." I pull myself up, leaning against the tree not far from where I was knelt. Looking across at Zack, I notice he was reaching behind a rock to reveal a couple of blankets that I didn't expect to be stored somewhere like here.
"I think it's time you got some rest." He passed me 2 of the 3 blankets that he held. After unfolding his, he leaned against the rock as he rested his head on a pile of leaves that provided comfort as though they were a pillow. I mimicked his actions, but decided not to use leaves as a pillow. I shivered, not expecting to still be this cold with two blankets covering me.
"Zack." I looked across at him to find he was watching me.
"Yes?" His eyes lit up slightly.
"I'm still cold." Wriggling, I tried to get into a comfier position.
"Come here." I obeyed by going over and sitting a couple of inches away from him. I almost shrieked in surprise as he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me against him. Once I was snuggling into him, he spoke into my hair as he pecked it slightly. "Why don't you sleep here for tonight?"
I murmur in agreement, resting my head against his chest. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me into him as I adjust the blankets so they would be over the both of us. I felt my eyelids get heavier and heavier as I watched the stars above us and listened to sound of the water hitting the rocks as they went rushing down the stream. Smiling slowly, I fell into a deep slumber as my problems went to a distant part of my mind.
