I remember those simple times, when you made friends by sharing candy. Now it's so much more complicated.
We were so close, practically inseparable. And for what? To never speak again? We grew apart so fast it scares me. The biggest problem was, from my perspective it was all fine. We were as close as ever, they all texted and called after I moved.
Then I would visit, and invite everyone over. They would try to play it off for me, but I could notice how tense everyone was. The awkward glances, the constant texting of "other friends".
After elementary school I had moved to Germany for the whole of middle school. Now that it was high school my family moved back. We had kept our house and visited frequently, but I guess it just wasn't enough.
There were six of us in total. We were very different but all had one similarity; we were outsiders. We were the group of insane buddies that everyone rolled their eyes at. In fifth grade Lauren and Devin started to roll their eyes too. They became more popular, and started dating in 8th grade. That's when they really shut us out. They stopped texting as much, never called.
The remaining four stayed outsiders, but I had new friends. I was barely ever in the US, and had next to no time to spend with the others.
Aaron joined so many sports, study groups, and extracurriculars he was always busy. His parents are super-strict, and he's always either playing one of his many sports, studying, or something.
Becka kind of broke off on her own, to the point where she only really talked to Jesse. He always seemed to understand her more than the rest of us, and vise-versa.
Jesse's story was about the same as Beck's although he got pretty busy with drama-club, singing lessons, orchestra, and band. He made this new friend named Dom, and left the rest of us behind.
So when I moved back the summer before 9th grade, everything was different. I wanted to give the group one more chance. As the movers brought the rest of our belongings into our house I opened my laptop and sent an email:
To: Group Awesomeness
Hey guys, I just moved back! :) wanna meet up at the mall on Saturday? Yh yh I know we aren't really friends anymore but can we at least hang out? Tell me if ur coming I'll be there around 3 to save our table (you know, the one we would always sit at, in the corner of the food court??). -Erica
I reluctantly clicked send and decided to visit my neighbor. Jesse.
