I didn't know what to do next. I wandered aimlessly around the estate but however many times I tried to find a logical explanation to what was happening, I couldn't. How? How could my own mother, who had carried me inside her for nine months, forget her own daughter? How could my father, who was always nagging me, act like I didn't exist to him? In one swipe my life had turned from a happy Friday night into this... I don't even know what this is. Misery. Yep. Pain. Definitely. Confusion. Positive. I couldn't name this. Suddenly, I had a brain storm, Tia! I was with her all day, she must remember me! I ran through the familiar streets to her house and rapped sharply on the door, I had gone past being polite. Her mum answered the door and I asked, "Is Tia in?"
"Why?" Her mum asked squinting at me with her beady eyes.
"I need to talk to her."
"Hmm," her mum said, looking in two minds about what to do next.
"You do know me don't you?" I asked looking straight into her eyes.
"I'm sorry..." She stammered.
"No, please Shelly, remember me!"
"How do you know my name?"
"I'm Tia's best friend!"
"Yes!" I said, the truth was I didn't go to her school but the safest bet was to say I knew her from school or her mum would never let me see her.
"Ok, I will go get her," Shelly said, "Tia there's a girl here for you!" She shouted up the stairs. As Tia ran down the stairs I felt I rush of gratitude towards her, of course she will remember me!
"Tia!" I said as she looked at me incredulously confused.
"Do I know you?" She asked oblivious to my tear stained face.
"Yes, I'm your best friend! Please say you know me?!" I shouted.
"Uhhh I can't say I do," Tia said as her mum came through to see what was all the racket.
"I'm sorry but Tia has to go now," her mum said firmly as she slammed the door in my face. What am I supposed to do? I asked myself as I walked away from her house and onto the street. Books and films never covered this sort of thing, I don't know any scientists who can prove who I am or any mythical creatures whom I can tell my troubles to. I searched my phone and found my other friend's number and dialled ... Finally she picked up "Hello?" Elle asked.
"Hey Elle it's Maya," I said, silently praying for her to remember.
"Maya your best friend?"
"Excuse me, I am The phone holder's mother, how did you get this number?" Elle's mum was on the phone now.
Great I thought to myself, just perfect.
"Elle gave it to me, I go to her school, you know me, Jackie's daughter?" I said, although Jackie doesn't remember me, I silently added.
"I'm afraid I don't, sorry, the only Jackie I know has a son, no daughter," she said.
"Please, " I sobbed " no one remembers me!"
Then, Elle's mum cut me off. I phoned again but Elle didn't answer. Then I got a message through telling me that if I don't leave her and her family alone, she would be calling the police. "Why!" I
sobbed, "What have I ever done?"
I started screaming, loud. When I scream it kind of comes out like a cat screeching, but all I wanted was someone to recognise me! Was it to much to ask? In the end, I sat on the park bench and sobbed quietly to myself, I couldn't take it anymore, I just wanted to curl up on the floor and wake up in my old comfy bed.
