A week after I received the package, I quit my job and said goodbye to my family again. I’m really fast and good when we talk about running away.
I asked Nathalie to picked me at the airport.
I decided to go to New York after all, I mean, I loved Nick and I was still hurt but I thought about ME, thought about my opportunities and what I was facing… I knew nothing would be perfect but at least I’d be happier about my job and my real friends a little closer. My family stayed at Mexico of course, but I really wanted something better for my life than just being seated in front of a desk.
“How was your flight?” Nathalie asked me with her beautiful accent when we were on her car.
“It was fine… You know, tiring as always.”
“Is that Nick’s V-neck t-shirt?” My blond friend pointed at me.
“Yes.” I admitted. “I had nothing to wear… I packed everything.”
“Yeah… Sure.” She said with sarcasm. I blushed.
I wasn’t lying. I was using it because I had nothing else to put on and I must say I hadn’t noticed about it until Nathalie said so.
We headed to her place. I didn’t like the thought of making my friend and her new husband uncomfortable but I needed a place to stay at least until I got a new apartment or enough money to get into a hotel.
My cell phone blew up with a text. It was from Joe.
Sorry I haven’t called but I need you to get on Skype like… NOW!
“Joe.” I told my friend when we were at her place taking all my things out.
“Joe? Has Nick told him already?”
“I don’t know. He wants me to get online.”
“Go ahead!” Nathalie said.
“I don’t know…”
“Come on! He’s your friend! I’m sure he would do anything for you getting back to Nick!”
“I don’t really want to know anything about Nick.”
“Yeah… That’s why you still have his shirt.”
I rolled my eyes, sighed and took my laptop. I put it on the table between Nathalie and me. Got online and saw Joe on the other side of the screen with an excited look.
“Hey.” I said.
“Hey! How are you?” He asked looking at my shirt. “Is that… One of Nick’s V-necks?”
“Fine… Not of your business. What’s up?”
“Yes, it is.” He gave me that pretentious smirk. “Anyway…”
“Hello, Joe!” Nathalie greeted him and walked by my side.
“Hey! Wait… If she’s... You are in New York!”
“Why do you care? Is not of your business.” I repeated. “Why the hell did you want me online?”
“I care because you’re my friend. Whatever. You need to listen t-” Someone knocked his door interrupting what he was saying. “Wait right here and don’t make a sound.”
“Trust me! Please.” He begged, stood up and we heard him opening the door letting the computer facing a wall and nothing else. “Man, we need to talk.”
“About what?” I heard Nick saying. His voice went through my ears and punched my heart once again.
“First of all… Why didn’t you tell me you’re done with Vanya?”
“Did you talk to her?” Nick asked with a rude tone.
“Answer me. You’re my brother, don’t you trust me?” OH, MAN! WHAT’S WITH JOE AND TRUST?!
“I do… It’s just-” He sighed.
