The Musician's Sister

Kai has been wanting to make it big time in Nashville, but every other time he's played at whatever bar that will take him, he's been shot down because he's not good enough. Danie is Kai's sister, she like her brother has a dream of singing on the big stage.

*Still Danie's POV*

I sat there in the waiting room, hoping Kai is okay. I begin pacing and then I stop, because I get the sudden urge to sing the chorus of Kenny Chesney's song 'Big Star'.

I sing, "She was a big star at Banana Joe's Bar where she sang karaoke everynight. She said if you work hard to get where you are it feels good in the hot spotlight. She was a big star.". I hear, "That was very good, Danie.". I turn around to find Dustin, trying his best to smile.

"Do you work here?".

"The scrubs give that away?".

"Probably.".

A man in a white jacket and green scrubs walks over to Dustin and I. He clears his throat and asks, "Daniellea Night?". I look at the Dr. and say, "It's 'Danie', not 'Daniellea', sir.". He nods his head and says, "But you are Daniellea Night, correct.".

"Yes.".

"Are you the next of kin for Kaian Night?".

"Ye-ye-yes, Si-si-sir.".

"Your brother has broken his leg, fractured a rib and has a possible wrist injury as well. Was he playing any dangerous sports lately?".

"No, Sir.". Dustin cuts in and says, "A scaffolding fell on top of Mr. Night. Danie was quick enough to act before it was to late.".

The Dr. looks at Dustin then to me and back to Dustin. He nods his head and then just walks off, not another word about Kai. I sit down in one of the chairs in the waiting room and put my head in my hands. Dustin comes over and sits down next to me.

"It's all my fault.".

"Why do you think it's your fault?".

"I was supposed to go back there and get something from that shelf.".

"If you went back there and did that, you'd be in the hospital, not Kai.".

"What are you trying to say?".

"Kai...". It finally clicked after Dustin just said 'Kai'.

"He went back there, knowing that the scaffolding/shelf, whatever the hell you want to call it could fall at any moment. Knew I was going back there and going to get something off of that shelf. OH MY GOD, my brother, unknowingly saved my ass!".

Dustin nods his head and say, "Mmhm.".

Uncle Mike walks over to us about two hours later, a grim look on his face. I know that all to well, it means bad news. I shake my head, my way of telling Uncle Mike that I do not want to hear it. Dustin looks at me, not saying anything. I stand up and head out the door. A different nurse stops me and asks, "Are you walking out on a family member, Dearie?".

"No, ma'am, just walking out here to get some fresh air before I go and see my brother.".

"Is he the one that played at Michael Night's bar?".

"Yes Ma'am, that's my brother.".

The nurse nods and walks in as Dustin walks out. He just stands there, not making a sound. We stay silent for atleast twenty or so minutes.

"Ya okay, Danie?".

"Yeah, Dustin, I'm fine.".

"Want me to take you up to Kai's room?".

"Yeah.".

Dustin and I walk to Kai's room in silence, barley looking at each other. Once inside I sit in one of the oversized chairs, facing Kai's hospital bed.

"Hey, Kai.".

"Hey, Danie.".

"Thanks for saving me.".

"How did I, oh..okay...yeah.".

"How bad is it?".

"Broken leg, fractured rib and a possible wrist fracture.".

"I know this is off topic, but do you want me to sing  'Brothers Under The Sun'?".

"If you want, Danie.".

I nod, remembering the lyrics clearly.

"I had a dream of the wide open prairie, I had a dream of the pale morning sky, I had a dream that we rode on golden wings. And we were the same, just the same you and I. Follow your heart little child of the west wind, Follow the voices that's callin' you home, Follow your dreams, but always remember me. I am your brother, yeah, under the sun. We are like birds of a feather, we are two hearts joined together, we will be forever as one. My brother under the sun. Wherever you hear the wind in the canyon, wherever you see the buffalo run, wherever you go, I'll be there beside you. 'Cause you are my brother, my brother under the sun. We are like birds of a feather, we are two hearts joined together, we will be forever as one.".

"Thank you, Danie. Are you going to stay here?".

"Not tonight, Kai. I have to work at the bar in the morning.".

Kai nods his head just as another nurse walks in and as Dustin and I are walking out.

"That was nice enough, for you to do for your brother, Danie," Dustin says as he's swiping out at an electronic clock.

"I thought you had to work a shift.".

"My shift ended two hours ago, that's how long you've been here, waiting to see Kai, I stayed over to make sure you were okay," he says as he places his badge in one of the pockets on his scrub top.

"I...WHAT," I say slightly raising my voice.

"You've been here for about two hours. You dozed off for most of it.".

"I'm sorry," I say, then I sing  Hard Corps.

"The eagle born to those who pledged their lives and sacred honor was smiled upon by God and freed from chains and iron collar. He is held aloft on unity and by history revered; for preserving peace through strength his wings now reach across two hundred years. But for each of those and one year more, God has smiled upon The Corps, from the Barbary Coast to the Eastern Sand, by sword, by gun, or by bare hand. So it's been, and shall be weighed: though many are born, few are "made". Faithful Always, they shall remain, dogs to loose when war is waged.

I am a Marine on the beach, I'm a killin’ machine, with a need to bleed you when the light goes green, best believe, I’m in a zone to be, from my Yin to my Yang to my Yang Tze. Put a grin on my chin, come to me, ‘cuz I’ll win, I’m one-of-a-kind and I’ll bring death to the place you’re about to be: another river of blood runnin’ under my feet. Forged in a fire lit long ago, stand next to me, you’ll never stand alone. I’m last to leave, but the first to go, Hard Corps is the only way I know. I feed on the fear of the devil inside of the enemy faces in my sights: aim with the hand, shoot with the mind, kill with a heart like arctic ice

I am a Devil-Dog I’m marching on,
I am a warrior and this is my song

I bask in the glow of the rising war, lay waste to the ground of an enemy shore, wade through the blood spilled on the floor, and if another one stands I’ll kill some more. Bullet in the breech and a fire in me, like a cigarette thrown to gasoline, if death don’t bring you fear then death ain't brought by no Marine. Come to the nightmare, come to me, deep down in the dark  where the devil be, in the maw with the jaws and the razor teeth, where the brimstone burns and the angel weeps. Call to the gods if I cross your path and my silhouette hangs like a body bag; hope is a moment now long past, the shadow of death is the one I cast.

I am a Devil-Dog I’m marching on,
I am a warrior and this is my song
Hell has no demon I won't overcome,
I am a warrior and this is my song

Now I live lean and I mean to inflict the grief, and the least of me's still out of your reach. The killing machine’s gonna do the deed, until the river runs dry and my last breath leaves. Chin in the air with a head held high, I’ll stand in the path of the enemy line. Feel no fear, know my pride: for God and Country I’ll end your life.

I am a Devil-Dog, I’m marching on,
I am a warrior and this is my song
Hell has no demon I won't overcome,
I am a warrior and this is my song
I made the devil himself turn and run,
I am a warrior and this is my song
Into the fire I will keep marchin' on,
Oorah, Marine Corps, Get Some...".

Some of the male nurses look at me, astonished looks on their faces.

One asks, "How do you know that song, ma'am?",

Another says, "Most of us are marines.".

"My uncle," I replied after briefly saluting them.

"Can you sing 'Leviathan'," the one that asked me how I knew that song, says.

I nod thinking of the correct lyrics to that song.

"The eagle born by freedom won, yet held in precarious station, set upon defense and steeled his will, to guard and protect his new nation. So he resolved, defiant of all who would challenge his right to be free with a "swift-sailing vessel and ten carriage guns" to hunt the world's oceans and seas. Born to go into harm's way - come all! Ye Hell or high waters be damned! No lightning, no thunder, no hurricane gale, can stand in the face of his wrath. Be he beneath his enemy's feet or by clouds where their gaze can not go, when Leviathan rise, every last man shall shake to the core of his soul...

Now, fear the deep and the teeth of the killin’ machine, with a need to bleed you anywhere you be, best believe, I’m in the zone to be, from my Yin to my Yang to my Yang Tze. I’m last to leave, but the first to go, Lord, "underway's" the only "way" I know. I feed on the fear of the devil inside of the enemy faces in my sights: aim with the hand, shoot with the mind, kill with a heart like arctic ice

I am Leviathan, "death" is my call,
I am a warrior and this is my song

I bask in the glow of the rising war, lay waste to the ground of an enemy shore, wade through the blood spilled on the floor, and if another one stands I’ll kill some more. Bullet in the breech and a fire in me, like a cigarette thrown to gasoline, if death don’t bring you fear then death ain't comin' from the deep. Come to the nightmare, come to me, way down in the dark  where the devil be, in the maw with the jaws and the razor teeth, where the brimstone burns and the angel weeps. Call to the gods if I cross your path and my silhouette hangs in the aftermath; hope is a moment now long past, the shadow of death is the one I cast.

I am Leviathan, "death" is my call,
I am a warrior and this is my song
My breath is fire, and my eyes are the dawn,
I am a warrior and this is my song

Now I live lean and I mean to inflict the grief, and the least of me's still out of your reach. The killing machine’s gonna do the deed, until the river runs dry and my last breath leaves. Chin in the air with a head held high, I’ll stand in the path of the enemy line. Feel no fear, know my pride: for God and Country I’ll end your life.

I am Leviathan, "death" is my call,
I am a warrior and this is my song
My breath is fire, and my eyes are the dawn,
I am a warrior and this is my song
We build, we fight, the end: you die. Move on.
I am a warrior and this is my song
You can run, but you won't hide long,
I am a warrior and this is my song.".

They clap and give me shouts of good. I nod to them and bow, my night just getting better and better.
