After collecting my winnings I was ushered out the back door and to my car. Dan looked a little weird to me, he hadn't said a word to me since I went to go collect the money. As I loaded my bags, one for money and one for my stuff, into the back of my 2011 black escalade, I saw Dan impatiently waiting behind me to put his bag in the back. He threw his one trainer bag into the back quite hastily and practically jogged to get into the truck.
Judging on how quickly Dan had pulled me through the abandoned gym, I could piece together that he was either running or hiding from someone. I paused for a moment and thought about who had been there, at the fight, earlier tonight. Using my memory to guide me through, I scanned the crowd once more and didn't see anyone of any-
Wait. In the back, I saw Dan talking to someone. He was dressed in a black leather jacket with a matching fitted black t-shirt underneath. Black jeans were matched with formal black boots that looked matte, rather than shiny, like his jacket. His hair looked effortlessly styled, but the black color was that of a ravens feathers; so shiny and clean the light almost gave it a colorful reflective effect, like that of a diamond. Everything he wore was always a big contrast to his captivating blue eyes, that were so bright they seemed to shine a light on your soul.
There was only one, dirty rich, man that would wear such dark clothes and carry himself so intimidatingly at a fight like this.
The man that could have my head on a platter with the snap of his fingers- though he's more than capable of fighting anyone in the UBL with his own two bare hands.
Dan was talking to him, he must know that Max was after something. However, he didn't seems angry or suspecting of me so Max must've used his infamous 'charm' to scare Dan alone.
When I jumped into the drivers seat I quickly started the truck and threw my seatbelt on, occasionally glancing towards Dan who was looking out the window with a worried look. He had his hands between his legs and the black leather seat and his eyes kept flickering towards the dashboard behind the wooden covered steering wheel.
"Something wrong?" I asked, causing Dan to jump in surprise.
"No- what? No." He stammered, quickly moving his hands to his lap and then moving to put his seatbelt on.
I narrowed my eyes at him and stayed that way till he met my heated gaze. I would've been the same way if I was in his shoes, but one thing I hated was being lied to.
"What?" He demanded, defensively too.
"That's it," I quickly shut the truck off and pulled the keys out of the ignition," what's up your ass?"
"What are you talking about?"
"You've been acting weird since I walked out of the fucking ring, now spill." I snapped.
"I saw Max at the fight tonight." Dan said quietly, his eyes flickering with fear.
My blood ran cold and I sat up straighter, worry settling down on me now, too. Max had to have said something, even a suggestive comment to have Dan be so effected by him.
"Max?" I said, pretending to act oblivious to who he was referring to.
"Valentine, Max Valentine. The CEO and holder of the UBL and all our asses." Dan said, as if he was astounded that I responded the way I did.
"What's so bad about that?" I asked, trying my best to hold a passive face.
"C'mon Toni, why would he just randomly show up to some amateur fight? He was eyeing you like a shark eyes a fuckin' seal."
"What's that gotta do with-
I was interrupted by the two back door opening and two men sliding into the seats. But they weren't just any men, I knew them both well enough.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I demanded.
"We had to help somehow." Louis said, his smile barely visible in the dark.
"What are you-
"Instead of questioning everything, as per usual, just say thank you." He smiled, despite his ballsy response.
"Why would I have any reason to thank you?" I said with gritted teeth, failing to hold in my anger towards his out-of-line attitude.
"We may have added to your bets." Zayn said innocently.
His eyes held a secret, one that I was all too well. He was trying to spike my winnings, an attempt to make paying Max back quicker.
"We thought you'd needed the money." Louis smirked, sending me a quick wink.
"That is none of your busin-
"Now why would you go and do something like that?" Dan asked, turning around to acknowledge the boys for the first time since they came in. His question hadn't helped me much, but it kept me from jumping in the back to wring their necks.
"She needs the money, and we have more than enough to be able to help her out." Louis said simply.
"What do you mean 'she needs the money'?" Dan questioned.
I frantically looked at Louis and Zayn, silently begging them not to say a word to Dan. Zayn actually saw my look and nodded understandingly, but Louis was oblivious so my hasty actions.
"There's now way Toni could earn enough money to pay the bills at the gym, her house, and the money she owes Max. So-
He was cut off a little too late when Zayn quickly elbowed him in the ribs. By this time I had put my head in my hands, wishing that Louis didn't have to be so stupid.
"What the hell?" Louis said to Zayn.
Zayn leaned over and whispered something in his ear, eyeing Dan warily. When he pulled away Louis's face showed sympathy and fear, especially when he looked at Dan who was watching me closely.
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" Dan exploded.
I didn't flinch at his words like the boys did, but I put my lips in a tight line and close my eyes.
"You. Owe. Him. Money?" Dan exclaimed.
"I needed the money Dan, and I had no other money coming in other than the limited amount from the gym and I-
"You go out like a complete dumbass and ask Max Valentine!"
"You led me to believe that everything was fine; Max? Who's that? Oh, I don't know, Dan. You're just overreacting."
"I never said that." I defended.
"But you fucking acted so fucking innocent!" He yelled, and this time I flinched.
"When the fuck were you gonna tell me, Toni? Huh? When?" Dan demanded.
Dan had been yelling at Toni for a good hour before he stormed out of the truck and down the street alone.
Zayn and I had stayed behind to comfort Toni, but it wasn't really working. She seemed really aggravated and upset, either with herself or me. I say that because she eyed me with a burning hatred in her eyes and I earned a calculating look from Zayn, as if I was supposed to know better.
"Toni, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-
"It's fine Louis," she sighed and exasperatedly put her hair in a bun as if it lifted the weight off of her shoulders."
"You two can go, I need to be getting home anyways." Toni said quietly, sounding defeated.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"We don't mind accompanying you to your house." Zayn said with a small smile.
"No, thank you. I need some time to myself for the time being." She said, attempting to smile back.
I wasn't keen on leaving her by herself, but in any fight Toni would win. Regardless, there was an uneasy feeling settling in my stomach as Zayn opened the door to leave.
Before sliding off of the leather seat and into the night I patted Toni on the shoulder reassuringly. I felt her tense up under my touch like she usually does, but I chose to let it go this time- it was obvious that she didn't want anyone around.
"Don't hesitate to call me or one of the lads if you need anything." I said, trying to hide the sadness and disappointment from my voice.
"Ok, thank you Louis." Toni said dismissively, not looking up from her clenching fists as they rested on her lap.
I don't know what it was, but I felt very uneasy after sliding out and shutting the door of the truck. Every fiber of my being was screaming at me to go back, but I chose to ignore it.
She doesn't need you.
That's what I kept telling myself as the need to go back got stronger with every step that I took.
