"Did you find anything at the morgue?" I asked Henry.
We were heading home for the night.
"No, the chief was right, the river washed off any evidence." said Henry.
"I just don't get it, who would want to hurt an 18-year old mother?" I asked, trying to sort it all out.
"I don't know. Maybe even the score with her."
"Who would want to even the score with her? Lily never hurt anybody." I said.
"There's something else bugging you." said Henry.
"They caught Smith, but he got away." I said, trying to stay calm.
"I'm sorry, Liv." said Henry.
"You know ever since it happened, I can't get a full night full asleep." I said, choking up.
"Liv, listen to me. What happened wasn't your fault." said Henry.
"Yes, it is. I never should have gone." I said, tears falling down my face.
"You should of just moved on, we both should of." said Henry, as I finally got to his house.
"I can't move on. Not until Smith is locked up."
"We could've tried again Liv, but you just let this hate bottle up inside you." said Henry.
"I couldn't try again, not after what happened." I said.
"So you just decided to throw away everything we had together?"
"I didn't throw it away, it was special for me too, but it was also unrealistic." I said.
"What do you mean unrealistic?" he asked.
"We couldn't have a family, not with this job." I said.
"How do you know? Maybe it could've worked. Maybe it can still work." he said and that was the only warning I got until Henry's lips crushed mine.
I found myself not resisting, but kissing back. All these years of fighting the feelings I had for Henry were gone.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
I woke up to the sound of Henry's alarm clock and realized that I was in Henry's bed.
"Morning." said Henry, coming out of the bathroom. He bent down to kiss me.
"I can't believe this is happening." I said after he pulled away.
"Well, believe it." he said putting on his clothes.
Just then my phone rang.
"Detective Johnson." I said, answering the phone.
"Liv, we've got a problem." said Thomas.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Mrs. Parker shot Jason and took Melanie." said Thomas.
"Wait, what? Is he alive?"
"He's in surgery right now. The gun she used was the same gun that killed Lily."
"She shot Lily." I said, astounded.
"Yes. She took Melanie to the same bridge where Lily was killed. I need you to come down and talk to her." said Thomas.
"I'll be there in a minute." I said, throwing the covers off and hanging up.
"What should I say?" I asked the Chief as soon as we got there.
"Emphasize with her. Tell her you know she didn't mean to kill Lily and that you know she loves Lily. Keep the topic on Lily." he said.
I walked over to the part of the bridge where Mrs. Parker's car sat.
"Mrs. Parker!" I yelled.
"Just leave us alone!" she yelled back, she had Melanie sitting on the edge of the bridge.
"Listen to me, I know you didn't mean to kill Lily, you were just upset." I said, slowly approaching her.
"Stay back! I'll drop her!"
"No, you won't. You love Melanie, just like you loved Lily." I said.
"Please, just go away!" she yelled, tears rolling down her face.
"I don't have my gun, I just want to talk." I said.
"Why can't you just back off?"
"I can't do that. I need you to tell me about Lily." I said.
"I just wanted to talk to her, I never meant to hurt her."
"I know, but you don't want to hurt Melanie." I said.
"I just wanted to talk some sense into her. She can't raise a child without a husband, it's just not right."
I pulled up behind her and got out of the car.
"Lily, get in the car." I said, pointing the gun at her.
"Mom, what are you doing?" she asked standing up.
"Just do it." I said and she slowly made her way back to the car.
"Mom, what do you want?" she asked, as we sat in the car.
"I want you to marry Jason."
"I can't, Mom."
"Don't you love him?"
"Of course I do, but I don't want my entire life to be decided by a man, like you."
"What do you mean like me?" I asked.
"Mom, dad decided your whole life and never let you do anything, and you can deny it all you want, but I know you hated it."
"No, I didn't. I love my life." I said, pointing the gun at her.
"No, you don't and I know you're not going to shoot me." she said getting out.
"Lily, get back here!" I yelled, getting out.
"I won't be like you!" she turned and yelled back at me.
Before I knew what I was doing I lifted the gun and shot her. She fell hard to the ground.
"Oh god, no!" I cried, running over to her.
I picked her up and put her in my car and then drove to the bridge.
End of Flashback
"I just wanted her to understand. I didn't mean to hurt her." she cried.
"I know you didn't want to hurt Lily and I know you don't want to hurt Melanie now." I said.
"No, I don't." she said.
"Then let her go." I said.
She thought it over for a minute and put Melanie down.
"Come on, Melanie." I said, holding out my arms. She ran into them.
Henry and the Chief ran past me to go arrest Mrs. Parker.
"I want my daddy." said Melanie.
"I'm going to take you to him." I said.
"Do you think Melanie's going to be ok?" I asked Henry as we watched Melanie reunite with her father.
"It's not going to be easy, especially when she gets older, but I think she and her dad can get through it." he said.
"What about us?" I asked.
"What about us?" asked Henry.
"Do you think we can get through it together?" I asked.
"What are you saying, Liv?" he asked.
"I want to try again. I want to give us a second chance."
"Are you sure?" asked Henry.
"Yes, I've missed you too much." I said.
"What about Smith?" asked Henry.
"We'll catch him eventually, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but we will catch him. Until then I'm not going to let the hate and anger control me anymore." I said.
"Well, then let's go home." said Henry, taking my hand.
We walked hand in hand out of the hospital and all I could do was smile. This was the life I had wanted before everything got so messed up.
But that's another story.
