4. Chapter 4
Mum woke me up by gently rubbing my arm. She told me to get some comfy clothes on and grab some toast out of the toaster. I did as I was told and in half an hour we were out of the door and in the car heading towards the airport for our six hour flight to Miami where we would see our new house and visit my new school, gulp. I was knocked out of my daydream by the car engine being turned off. It didn’t occur to me that the building would be so bright next to the black sky. I glanced at the clock on the dash board. It was 5:30 in the morning. I didn’t think I had ever been up so early in my life.
As we got out of the car I knew I had to put the thought of leaving my best friends behind me and try to move on and imagine the new friends I would get in America. We got out of the car and entered the airport. The operation was already in full swing when we went in all sleepy. The queues were enormous and I thought that it would take ages to get through the scanner and get our passport checked. It surprisingly didn’t take too long and before I knew it, it was seven o’clock and we were boarding the plane. We walked up the steps and into the surprising homeliness of the plane. We took our seats and my Mum and I had a boiled sweet to help our ears pop.
The plane took off and I looked out of the window at the rising sun. We were well above the clouds and I was still undecided whether I liked flying or not. I just thought about how my friends had been on planes to go to Greece and other exotic places on holiday. I however didn’t have that experience and this was the first time I had flown. I got teary eyed and decided to watch a movie on my Ipod to cheer me up. I figured I'd just have to make sure I didn’t think about my past life too much.
About halfway through the flight I decided that I liked flying and I was brave enough to get out of my seat to get a drink and some crisps. I didn’t want to eat too much incase of turbulence. I chose to have an oasis and some cheese and onion flavour crisps. The flight went a lot smoother than I expected it to be. I don’t know what I was scared of.
Just after I finished my drink and crisps we landed and I walked off the plane to an extreme heat that I had never witnessed before. Although it was snowing in Scotland, Miami was bright sunshine and warm. It must have been about thirty degrees, no wonder the American girls on TV and in magazines were so tanned. It was so bright I was squinting and nearly crashed into the airport doors!
