10. Getting help

"I-I know that you are keeping a secret from me. I'm not pleading you to tell me that secret, Ellen but, I could help you."

Concern was in his eyes. "How can I give away my secret when you won't even give away yours?"

His hand slipped from mine. "I'm embarrassed," he muttered. "My secret is not something I just tell anyone."

    "Well, so is mine."

''Is your dad making you come home?" He asked, changing the subject.

     I nodded, briefly. "Yea."

     "You're lying."

     "Excuse me?" I asked.

"You're lying, Ellen. You showed up one day, way out of the blue. You obviously, didn't have enough money so, I took you in. I don't know what brought you here but, it's like you're running away from something...or someone. I don't know what it is but, I have this sudden urge to protect you." He said, staring intensely at me.

"Yea, well, I don't need protection." My words came out a little to harshly then I would've liked. I think that's what I was trying to do, is protect him. I will be putting him in more danger if I continue staying here. It's not like he needs protection, just by looking at him I can tell how tough he is, but, I care for him and this is the first time I ever cared for someone.

"I like you. Is that such a bad thing?" He asked, almost painfully.

"Yea," I muttered. "I shouldn't of got close to you. I'm sorry." This is what I have to do. It's for the best. "I don't like you," I lied. "And I will be hurting you more, if I stay here."

He crossed his arms and stood up straight. He nodded, briefly. "Just leave," he muttered.

"I want to say thank you," I chocked. "For everything."

     He nodded.

He walked off while I stood here with tears threaten to fall. I took a deep breath.

I walked out closing the door behind me. I shouldn't worry about him. I have to many other things to worry about, such as making sure my dad doesn't find me. I did tell Collin, I will come back in the morning to fight but, I'm not going too. From what just happened, I'm pretty sure Collin knows I'm not going to come back anytime soon. What I know now in fighting is good enough.

I started walking, slowly. I glanced back a few times. A little part of me was hoping Collin would open the door, but, it never happened.

I took out my phone to still see the messages from my dad. I deleted them all and all the missed calls. I blocked his number as I started walking further.

All I could see was woods now. I might as well, sleep on a tree tonight but, first I have to check something. I lifted my hoodie. I have a duty I have to fulfill. I knew exactly where the police station was. I knew my dad was going to try to look for me, he probably even contacted the police. I knew my dad didn't care about me but, he doesn't have a punching bag anymore since I left.

Once I made it to the police station, there was pictures taped on the glass widows for a lost kid. Not just any lost kid, me.

My breath became uneven and I started walking away from the police station, in case someone recognizes me. "Ellen!"

I turned around and really wished I wasn't. Collin was standing there with one of my pictures in his hand. He walked up to me slowly. He glanced up at me and shook his head. "Or should I say, Kelley?" He asked. "You're a lost kid. Really? You know if you would've stayed with me, people would've thought I kidnapped you."

    "That's why I didn't." I stated.

"I thought you said you talked to your dad."

"That's complicated. I thought I left you not that long ago."

His face turned a shade of red. "I followed you."

I stared at him. A tough and good-looking guy is willing to protect me for free. I think I will take that offer. "No matter what I'm going through, will you stick through it with me?"

He stared at me for a few seconds, "as long as you're not running from the police."

"I kind of am, Collin, but, I'm mostly running from my dad. I'm just a lost kid."

"So, what? You want me to play as your kidnapper?" He asked in disbelief.

I gave him a pleading look. "Maybe, we won't get caught."

    "And if we do?"

    "I will bail you out."

    "How? You have no money."

"Who said I needed money?" I stared down at my nails with a small smile on my face.

He laughed. "This is risky kid."

"I'm not a kid. I'm turning eighteen tomorrow."

      "Tomorrow?"

       I nodded.

"Ok, if you want me to help you with your plan, you're going to have to tell me your secret. I think your secret has something to do with this and I don't want to be left clueless while we're doing this plan," he said. "And you have to let me get you something for your birthday."

I nodded. "That'll be fine. We first need to get a hotel. Even though, I'm running from my dad. There's a time where I don't want to run forever. Once I get a job, I will pay you back."

"No, it's fine. I'm happy to help and I have to close my gym first."

"Ok, I'll come with you." I said.

After he closed the gym, we went straight to a hotel and he paid our way in. The room was not all that fancy. It had two beds and a balcony. Good enough, I thought.

I unpacked all of my stuff and stood walked outside to the balcony, only to see Collin leaning against the railing. "Hey," I murmured.

    "Hey."

"I thought maybe, I would tell you that secret now?"

He nodded and turned around. I walked over to him slowly. I stood beside him.

"I was abused by my dad ever since I can remember. I've always been afraid of him ever since he murdered my mom. I was always slow of being afraid of something or someone but, when he did that to my mom, I actually became afraid of him. Not that long ago, I was walking alone and I found you." I sighed. "You were punching a boxing bag and I thought that was something I would like to do, so, I went back home and I once again got beat by my dad. I decided to leave that night and when I did, I took his wallet when he was a sleep but, it wasn't enough. I didn't think I was going to make it, until you found me."

"Wow," he said all in one breath. "I'm going to help you through this." He grabbed my hand and smiled at me softly but, I could tell he was angry.

"Something's wrong with you." I stated. "What's wrong?" I asked.

He walked closer to me and placed my hair behind my ear. "It's just your dad. How could he do something like that to you. You don't deserve to be beat on, Ellen."

      "It's Kelley."

       He smiled. "I know."
