Chapter 2:

We just stood there, amazed, speechless while my dad exchanged a few more words with our driver. He thanked him for the ride and gave him the money he owed.

“Amazing, isn’t it?”

He asked us. We just stood there and nodded our heads in agreement; we were still in disbelief that we were going to go in there.

“I have to go talk to a few people who will be working with us n this site. Want to come with me?”

“Of course!”

The two of us said at the same time. He nodded his head and gestured over to a small group of people standing under a tent staring at some computers and white boards. We slowly made our way over to the tent. I could make out three people in particular; a woman around my dad’s age with short blonde hair, a man just a bit younger than my dad with black hair leaning on the able where the computers were and one more man who could not have been much older than me and Helen, he had short brown hair and was sitting a bit away from the crowd reading a book.

“Hello Jason, great to see you again!”

The blonde woman said to my dad.

“Hey Cindy, great to see you. This is my daughter Diana and her best friend Helen; they’re going to be joining us this summer. I decided to show them what exactly it is that I do. Girls this is Cindy, my old colleague.”

“Great to meet you girls, I’m Cindy and that one over there is my son, Danny. I guess we had the same idea this year Jason.”

She said with a laugh. So that was who the boy was, at least one of my questions have been answered.”

“It’s great to meet you too.”

I said to Cindy

I heard Helen say next to me. I laughed a bit on the inside; it’s just like her to act like that when meeting someone older for the first time.

“Danny, come here I want you to meet someone!”

She called out. The boy reading put down his book on the table, got up and slowly walked toward us.

“This is Jason my colleague and this is his daughter Diana and her best friend Helen. They will also be joining us in the cave.”

“Oh, are you also going inside?”

I asked Cindy.

“Of course, you don’t think we would let you have all the fun” the brown haired boy answered “oh and I’m Danny, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you.”

This time me and Helen answered at the same time. We all shared a laugh on that one.

“Ok girls, you can stay here and chat with Danny while me and Cindy go and talk to a few more people before we start getting ready to go inside. Ok?”

My dad was looking at the two of us.

“Sure dad.”

“Ok, we’ll see you in a bit.”

I watched them slowly walk away while talking about one of their old adventures in Austria. After a few seconds my attention was pulled back to Helen and Danny when I hear my name being mentioned.

I heard Helen say.

“Sorry, what?”

“Danny just asked us if we’ve ever done this before.”

I looked up at him and saw that he was still looking for a reply, I finally got my mind back where it belongs and said:

“No, unfortunately.”

“Well there’s a first time for everything, right?”

“So have you ever done this before?”

Helen said before I even had the chance to process what he had just said.

“Yeah but nothing as big as this, I’m really excited!”

“So are we, I can’t wait to start working on my story!”

This time I was the one to speak even though I regretted it. I didn’t want him to get the wrong impression of me by being too straight forward.

“What story?”

He asked me.

“I’m working for an article to send to the city magazine, I’m hoping to get it published.”

“Well that sounds cool. What’s it about?”

“Adventure, it’s about our adventure this summer.”

“Well I hope I’ll get mentioned somewhere then.”

He said with a laugh, I also couldn’t help but laugh a bit. I don’t know what it was but I was just so comfortable around him.

“Hello I’m here too; remember?”

I had almost forgotten that Helen was standing right next to me.

“Of course, how could anyone forget about you?”

I said with a bit of a mocking tone. Our conversation had to stop here because my dad and Cindy were coming back and they were holding a bunch of ropes. Behind them four more people were coming.

“Ok guys, these are Ricky, Nick, Joseph and Patrick, they are also going to be going with us down there.”

My dad told us while holding out a hand with ropes and hooks toward us.

“I hope you’re ready because the adventure begins right now, right here.”
