I thought Lyndsie would be mad at me but instead, she was relieved. Apparently the fact that I was only a tenth grader and that I was going to a senior party didn't occur to her until after I was at the party for three hours.
"Did you have fun?" She asked, once I got into her car.
I liked the smell of her car.
"Not really. Miranda gave me something called vodka. I feel really dumb because you would think I would be able to tell by the taste or smell, but I couldn't. And the fact that it was in a clear glass bottle with the word vodka written on it should have given it away."
"But you didn't know. They shouldn't have had that there in the first place." Lyndsie was quiet for a few moments, then she asked. "Did Harry have anything to go with it?"
"He didn't know until I told him."
"Are you sure?"
"All right." She told me to buckle up and started driving away.
For a while, we sat in silence as I watched Harry's house get smaller and smaller as Lyndsie drove away. It wasn't until his home was the size of a tiny dot that she started talking again.
"Just a heads up. Tomorrow, your head will probably be killing you. And you'll be pretty tired, maybe even a little nauseous. Oh, and you may not want to tell mom about this."
"I wasn't going to."
"How are you feeling now?"
It hurt my feelings that Miranda would trick me like that. I thought she was someone I could trust to get me water. Maybe I was wrong when I thought that I could make new friends.
It was only then that I realized that maybe Harry did know about the vodka. What if that was the only reason he wanted me to come? I knew it was strange for someone to talk to me, let alone, invite me to a party.
"I don't like parties."
She let out a light chuckle. "You'll come around."
Lyndsie was right when she said that I would be tired the next day. As usual, when I woke up, she was already at her job, which meant that I had to take care of myself.
I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I've never seen myself this way except for back when I was bad. I was still in my blue jacket and jeans from yesterday. My hair was a mess and there were dark circles under my eyes.
I lifted my hand up to my mouth, breathing out and smelling my breath, which smelt terrible. I quickly brushed my teeth, took a shower, and used the bathroom. After that, I threw on some sweatpants and a t-shirt without doing anything with my hair.
I wasn't hungry at all, so I just sat on the couch and watched cartoons downstairs.
The house was extremely quiet. No one was here to stop me from doing anything, which meant that, if I really wanted to, I could have some dance party, or pretend to be in some action movie. Instead, I got out a book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and began to read it for the fourth time.
It was't until 12:30 when someone knocked on my door.
Completely baffled, I peeked out the window to see none other than Harry standing at the door. His green eyes were focused intently on the closed door, so he didn't notice me standing there.
I rested my hand on the doorknob, hesitant to open it. After a few deep breaths, I swung open the door.
There was an awkward silence between us as we just stared at each other.
He was wearing a black shirt with a pair of skinny jeans. His hair was neatly styled and his eyes were full of life, though his facial expression had a solemn state. After a few moments, he rubbed his bottom lip with his thumb.
"Sorry about last night." Harry said.
"How did you know where I live?"
"Student directory." He smiled.
"Did you come here only to apologize?"
"Why? You didn't do anything"
"Yeah, well, I should've been more careful. Miranda is pretty crazy. Last time she brought pot brownies to the party and no one even realized until this guy Jason started acting really weird."
I laughed along with him, pretending like I knew what he was talking about.
"So," Harry continued. "where is everyone else?"
"Your mom, dad... Didn't you say you had a sister?"
"My sister's at work."
"What about your parents?"
I bit my lip and looked at the large willow tree in my front yard. Harry soon got the message and decided to drop it.
"You know what? How about we do something?"
"You're all alone in your massive house, I know that isn't fun. Why don't we go somewhere?"
"There's some guys I want you to meet, anyway."
"I promise, no vodka or pot brownies. Maybe just a burger or something? Or a milkshake?"
I shrugged, stepping outside. "I guess it'll be okay."
Harry laughed. "Aren't you going to change first?"
"Oh," I realized that I still had on sweatpants and a tee. "Yeah. Just give me a second. Um, do you want to come inside while you wait?"
I escorted him inside and pointed to the couch where my wrinkled blanket lay along with my book. The cartoons were still playing, but at the time, I didn't realize.
"I'm just going to go upstairs..."
He nodded as I walked upstairs.
In my room, I picked out a tan sweater with an owl on it, jeans, and a pair of boots. I didn't feel like I needed to be dressed up to go eat out. I never did, unless I was going with mom. But, with her, we went to special places.
Downstairs, Harry was studying my book.
I tapped his shoulder. "I'm ready."
"You read this?"
"Yes. It has a good message." I politely took it out of his hands.
"Innocence." He said.
