Zayn had been at the pub for a while with his crew. They noticed the gashes and the bruises on his body, and interrogated him.
"Who the fuck did that to you?" Andy asked, causing heads to turn around.
"I got in a fight." Zayn answered, staring at the cracks on the wall.
"With who?" Andy questioned.
Zayn didn't answer. He looked down at his lap, and did not bother to reply.
"Answer me." Andy said through gritted teeth.
"He was masked; but I do know one thing. He was from Gale's side." Zayn replied in a hushed voice.
Zayn then remembered the note, and slipped it from his pocket. He handed it to Andy, who aggressively tried to unravel it. He finally opened it up, and read the message.
Andy crumpled the paper back up, and stuffed it in his pocket. Everyone in the crew was sat around him and Zayn.
"What were you doing that this happened?" Danny, another member, asked.
"I went...on a date." Zayn replied, blushing a bit.
Things like "Oh, nice", "Who's the lassie?", and "What's her name?" had been thrown out at Zayn to answer. He couldn't possibly answer them at all. He just started talking to her. He would have not told them who it was, or bring her for a visit, because they were men, and an innocent girl like her should not be around bad boys.
"Her name is Evie-Mae, but you guys can't meet her, because I don't want her to have to start dealing with this kind of stuff and I don't want her in this type of environment." Zayn replied.
"Damn, man. Why are you trying to hide her from us?" Another boy, Sam, sighed.
"She's too innocent for this." Zayn stated, getting up from his seat on the stool, walking towards the bar.
Zayn took a shot of Tequila, and threw his money on the bar counter. He waved at his crowd of friends, and walked out of the bar. He had to get home.
As he reached his car, he saw a small note on his windshield.
"Mess with us, and we mess with your girl.- G", it had said. They were going to mess with her, and Zayn wanted her as far away from his other life as much as possible. He did not want her to deal with situations, because she had a life of her own to worry about, and she did not need to worry about another.
He jogged back inside, and all his friends noticed.
"Look, we need a plan." Zayn said, handing the paper to Andy.
"Well, we need to meet your girl, first." Sam replied, adding a smirk.
"That's part of it, but we need to also find a way to keep her out of it." Andy added.
"Well, I don't want to explain our background to her, but that would also mean that I'm hiding something from her." Zayn said, running a hand through his hair.
"Well, why don't we have a hang out, and we can invite some lady friends." Danny then suggested.
"Oh, no. I'm not letting Evie-Mae hang out with your mistresses or whatever you want to call them." Zayn declined, not liking what Danny said.
"Look, we either let her meet us, or you can lie to her forever, and she'll find out herself, Zayn." Andy barked, annoyed with Zayn's stubbornness.
"Fine, but you can leave your lady friends away, just maybe have one nice girl there that she can talk to, please." Zayn complied.
"Well, if Thalia is around, maybe I'll bring her, but she's usually with her mom." Andy said.
That's right, Andy did have a four year-old daughter named Thalia. Evie-Mae loved children, and that'll make her feel welcome a bit. She'll be entertained, and will also meet Zayn's friends.
"When are we gonna do this?" Danny asked.
"Um, how about this weekend?" Zayn suggested.
"Okay, on Saturday?" Andy asked.
"Yeah, that would be okay." Zayn answered.
"Okay, well, boys, I'll see you on Saturday. Dress appropriately, as we are going to be meeting a very innocent lady friend of Zayn." Andy said, dismissing the boys.
Everyone departed their ways, and Zayn walked to his car again. He hopped in, and drove away. He blasted the music, Jhene Aikó singing the lyrics to "The Worst".
As he drove down the street, he received a phone call. It was Evie-Mae. He muted the music, and answered.
"Hey, Evie-Mae." Zayn answered.
"Zayn? Are you at home?" She asked, sounding worried.
"Yeah. What's wrong, babe?" Zayn asked.
"Well, I had a nightmare, and I can't really sleep, so I thought maybe you could talk to me until I fall asleep." Evie-Mae answered.
"Well, I'm home, so I'll come over." Zayn said.
"Are you sure? My dad is sleeping and I don't want to wake him." Evie-Mae whispered.
"Don't worry, I'll be there in five minutes." Zayn reassured her.
"Okay, well, I'll be waiting." Evie-Mae stated.
"Okay, babe." Zayn said, then he hung up.
Minutes later, Zayn had snuck in, and it took a lot of effort to open the door without making a sound.
When Zayn and Evie-Mae quietly made it into her room, she jumped into his arms, holding him tight. He stroked her hair, and kissed her head.
"I'm so sorry about everything that happened." Zayn apologized, continuing to hold her.
"It's okay." Evie-Mae answered.
"Let's lay down, okay?" Zayn whispered, letting go of her. He took her hand and led her to her bed.
She laid down, and Zayn covered her up. He sat down at the desk, and watched her, admiring her features in the dark.
"Zayn?" Evie-Mae whispered.
"Yes?" Zayn answered.
"Can you come lay down with me?" Evie-Mae asked.
"I...I don't know, Evie-Mae. Are you sure?" Zayn asked.
"Please?" She begged, her voice cracking.
Zayn had given in. Even in the dark, Evie-Mae's eyes shone brightly. He took off his shoes, and laid in bed next to her. Evie-Mae turned over, so that she could look at Zayn.
"Goodnight, Zayn." She whispered.
He smiled, "Goodnight, Evie-Mae."
