34. Another Love
'What are you doing?!' Charles hisses at me as I hug Mum tighter, trying to make sure this wasn't just a dream i concocted.
'Shhh shhh you're gonna be okay,' she whispers in my ear before drawing back to take a look at me. She wipes away the tears from my cheeks as she smiles at me.
'You've grown into such a beautiful young lady I'm so sorry I haven't been there to witness it,' she adds sadly. I hold her hand smiling through my tears before instincts (I had instincts?!) kicked in.
'C'mon Mum we need to get you out of here before anyone notices!' I looked wildly around the room looking for any tell tale signs of rusted keys on a hook for the lock on the prisoner cells.
'No! Honey, listen you need to go!' Mum answers urgently. I noticed Bert and Ernie (what else was I supposed to call them?!) had taken up watch positions on both entrances (ours and the other leading to god knows what) their bodies tense as Charles makes his way towards us.
'Milady, we need to make haste in order to get you out,' he said with formal haste. I was surprised at his sudden formalness. I wonder why he hasn't addressed me in the same way considering technically I'm a princess... wait...
'No, you need to take my daughter and leave NOW,' she added with emphasis. I could see the desperation in her eyes as the situation prickled the hairs on my neck.
'Mum what's wrong...?' I ask with baited breath. Alarm flared up in my body as I bend down to grip my staff. She starts to cry.
'It's a trap,' she starts to sob. Charles pulls me away from her as her words sunk into my head. I whip round and start to run for the entrance just as an arrow flies straight towards me. I whirl around as I stop it 2 centimetres from my forehead. Anger blurred my vision.
