The next morning I awoke and didn't feel a body beside me. I turned to see that Harry was gone. I sat up in bed and called out his name, but there was no answer. I checked the bathroom down the hallway, but he wasn't in there either.
I smelled the scent of food and followed it down the hallway. I entered the kitchen and there was Harry, cooking. Wait, he cooks? Why did this surprise me so much? "Morning, I woke up early and made you breakfast." He set a serving on a plate, then placed it on the counter.
I grabbed myself a fork and sat down on the barstool at the counter, then taste the food. "So?" He asked as he raised an eyebrow. Surprisingly, it was amazing. "How'd you learn to cook like this?" I asked him.
He shrugged, "I took it up when I was younger. I just found an interest in it. I bake too."
"Well, this food is fantastic." It reminded me a lot of my mom's cooking and my heart sunk a little thinking about her. "Thanks." he smiled. I don't think I've ever seen him smile before. When he smiled, his dimples showed and I thought they were adorable.
"What time is it?" I asked him.
"Ten-thirty." He replied. I just nodded and continued to eat my breakfast. Harry gave himself a serving and began to eat as soon as he sat beside me. "Thanks for um…" I cleared my throat and started again. "Thanks for staying."
"I just want to make sure you're okay." he said. I don't think I'll ever be okay after that night. I played around with some of the food on my plate. "Cam, if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here."
"Thanks Harry." I heard my phone ring from the bedroom and I hurried down the hallway to answer it. "Hello?"
"Hey, it's Perrie. Want to meet up for dinner tonight? There's someone I want you to meet." Perrie said. I told her that I'd see her tonight and she told me I could bring anyone I wanted to dinner. We chatted for another minute and hung up.
I walked back out into the main room and sat down on the barstool. "Who called?" Harry asked.
"Perrie." I replied.
"What did she want?"
"She invited me to dinner tonight and said I could bring someone." I left it at that. I didn't want to pursue anymore. Harry and I barely knew each other, yet we slept in the same bed together and we've been at each others' apartments.
"Where is she planning to have this dinner?" I told him the name of the restaurant and he just nodded, then said he had to run. He added that he'll see me at work on Monday. Why did he seem to be in such a hurry?
I didn't want to make anymore assumptions, but I couldn't help my curious mind. I cleared all the plates away and went over the events that had just happened. The memories of Ethan suddenly creeped into my mind as soon as Harry had left the apartment.
With Harry's presence, all of those memories had been washed away. That monday, I went back to work and could hardly look Ethan or anyone in the eyes. Perrie and everyone else didn't know what happened over the weekend. I wasn't ready to talk about it yet.
"So, who are you deciding to bring?" Perrie asked as I sat down at my desk. I turned on my computer and shrugged, then resumed to do my work. Harry came in late, as usual, and sat down at his desk behind Niall.
"Tell me about the person you want me to meet." I said.
"Well, his name is Zayn Malik. He has jet black hair, brown eyes, and…" Then she went into detail about how they met. Her eyes just lit up when she talked about him. I could tell that she really liked him. "He sounds like a nice guy." I smiled.
"Oh, he's the sweetest." She gushed and I let out a light chuckle. During lunch break, Perrie continued on her rant about Zayn. Jade and Jessy had acted like they were interested. I bet they were thinking about other things.
Liam and Niall weren't interested in hearing Perrie's story. I was leaning against the wall beside the fridge when Harry walked in. His eyes had caught mine and I looked away, blushing. Perrie had seemed to catch on, but she didn't want to question it. I knew she'd ask me about it later.
Later that evening, I met Perrie and Zayn at the restaurant. The three of us shared a few laughs when someone joined us at the table. "Sorry, I'm late." His raspy voice sounded and it was clear who the stranger was. Harry.
"What a surprise to see you here Harry." Perrie's eyes glared at him, but Zayn rested his hand on hers and made her relax a bit. "I see you've finally met someone who could tame you." Harry smirked as he leaned back in his chair and rested an arm on the backrest of mine.
I wondered why Harry had chosen to come to dinner. I didn't ask him to, not directly anyway. Perrie asked me to go with her to the restroom and I followed her, leaving Harry alone with Zayn. "Of all people, he comes?" she asked me.
"I didn't ask him to come Perrie. I just told him that you were inviting me and told me to bring someone. He came on his own without my knowledge. I'm just as surprised as you are."
"Right, you're right Camille. I just don't want Harry to ruin my chances with Zayn." she said. "What's the deal with you and Harry at work today? You were seriously blushing bright red when he looked into your eyes.
"You've avoided him for quite a long time. Are you keeping something from me?"
"Harry and I are not dating Perrie. It's just- Some thing happened over the weekend, and I don't want to talk about it right now. Besides, this isn't the right place to discuss these things."
"I'll call tonight and we can talk then." she said. I nodded and then we both walked out of the bathroom, then sat down in our respective seats. After dinner, I bid Perrie goodbye with a hug and told Zayn that it was nice meeting him.
I followed Harry out to his car and got in the passenger seat. "Why did you go to dinner tonight?" I asked him as I buckled myself in. Harry started the car after buckling himself into the seat and drove down the highway. "Just making sure you weren't put in any sort of danger." he answered.
Danger? Why would I be in danger? "There's a lot of bad people out there Cam. People wanting to kill other people, and it's just bad." Was he able to read my thoughts? I was just so curious about him.
I glanced over at him from the passenger seat and saw that he was wearing a black t-shirt and dark jeans. I noticed the string of tattoos that lined his arm. Why haven't I- Right. He covers them up at work. I turned away and stared out the window, looking up at the night sky.
The car ride with Harry seemed almost comforting, unlike the first time I rode in his car. Was it that things have changed between us? I doubted it. "What are you thinking about?" he asked, immediately breaking the silence.
I looked at him and shrugged, "A lot of things."
"Why are you so intrigued on hearing what my thoughts are?"
"I'm just curious."
"Well, I'm just as curious as you Harry. I'm curious about a lot of things. I often question-" I stopped myself and then turned away. Was I ready to ask him the questions that I've kept to myself for so long? Was I ready to hear the answers he had to say?
When he didn't say anything, I knew he wanted me to continue. "I'm just- I'm curious about you." I swallowed, suddenly feeling uncomfortable in my seat. "What about me?" he asked.
"Well, why are you so… defensive? I mean, you never seem to have a soft side."
"It's a part of how I was raised Cam. I do have a soft side, but I never allow anyone to see that side. Well, you've seen it." he said. I raised an eyebrow at him and he smirked. "Don't act like you've never seen it."
"So, why am I the only person?"
"Well, you're not the only person." Only? Before things could go to far, Harry parked his car in the lot in front of the building. "Get out of the car." He was suddenly back to defensive Harry all-over again. I sighed and got out of the car without saying nothing, not even a goodbye.
I stepped into the lobby, only to see him back out of the lot and drive away. Where does he go at this time of night? I called for a cab and asked the driver to follow Harry's car. Camille Devine, what trouble are you putting yourself into now?
