“We are graduating! Like really graduating !” Sarah exclaims as she takes a deep breath and looks at the empty stage that was set up in front of us.
“All those years of hard work and torture have finally paid off!” I say with a sigh of relief.
“Thank you for everything Sar, I don’t think you realise just how much you helped me through everything I had to deal with through school. You were my reason for continuing when I felt like the world was crumbling around me” I say as I look at Sarah and give her a hug.
“Don’t be silly, we are a team! We work through things together! Through thick and thin!” She replies with a smile as she takes a step to the side to take a seat at one of the chairs that was set up looking at the stage.
“Everything we worked hard for was all worth it now, we can finally breath” I say as I sit next to Sarah and stare at the banners and balloons that had been set up on the stage.
“THE DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! I applaud you both, you are now at the stage in your life when you no longer have to use your brain if you don’t want to! Many congratulations!” I hear Louis yell as he walks down the empty walkway to take a seat behind us, followed closely by the boys.
“Well when you put it that way.. THANK FUCK! I don’t think my brain could have taken much more!” I exclaim dramatically tilting my head back while resting my hand on my forehead.
“Awww was that little brain of yours starting to get sore” Harry says with a laugh as he grips my head and shakes it.
“OI !OI! DO NOT. MESS UP. THE HAIR! IMPORATNT CEREMONY ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE!!” I yell jumping off my seat while fixing my hair to make sure it wasn’t out of place.
“Note to self! Never touch Liv’s hair without warning her first” Harry says to himself but loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Actually don’t touch anything that’s Liv’s if you wanna stay alive! Better to be safe than sorry! Take it from someone who knows..” Sarah says with seriousness in her voice causing everyone to laugh.
“Testing.. Testing.. Um… Excuse me student and.. guests, people are beginning to arrive so we ask you to either take your seats… or umm… head to the locker rooms to set up for the ‘Walk In’ at the start of the ceremony.” Mr Turner says as he bangs the microphone with hand to test it works.
“I guess that’s our cue!” Sarah says with nervousness in her voice as she gets up from her chair and gives Liam a kiss.
“Break a leg babe!” Liam says as he plants a kiss on Sarah’s forehead before giving her a hug.
“Don’t say that! You know how I’m weird with stuff like that.. like I Just don’t understand why people use the term ‘break a leg’ to wish someone good luck. To me that is just not logical. I mean why would you say something negative and terrible to someone when you are wishing them good luck. Why not say, ‘Good luck’, or ‘don’t break a leg’ at least then it’s like positive and won’t like ginx people into actually falling over and breaking their leg. Like how terrible wou….”
“Sarah! Sarah! Your babbling babe! Don’t stress so much you will do fine, I promise you won’t trip and break your leg. Now don’t over think this! Ohh and Good Luck!” Liam says with a slight laugh as he turns Sarah around by her shoulders and pushes her to start walking towards the locker rooms.
“But.. But..” She starts to say before I cut her off not wanting to have to deal with her breakdown while we are waiting for signal to start the ‘Walk In’.
“NO BUTS! Just keep walking and keep your trap shut! Thanks” I say as I take over from Liam to direct Sarah to the back of the oval and through the locker room doors. Before reaching the end of the set seats I turn around to give the boys smile, to receive back 5 pairs of thumbs up!
“Logan Paarks, Bachelor of Applied Science.”
“Mikayla Palms, Bachelor of Education”
“Kim Panes, also continuing with a Bachelor of Education”
My heart was racing as we got closer and closer to the top of the stairs. The world seemed to be silent around me only sharing hints of sound when a family member would jump up in celebration of their graduating student. I look over my shoulder to see Liv standing behind me looking exactly how I felt! As the final person standing in front of me makes their way up on stage my breathing turns uneven and nerves overtake my body.
I don’t understand the feeling really. This is what we have been working for, for so many years. Now and in a split second it was all going to be over, everything I have done at school comes down to this one moment..
“Sarah Parker, Bachelor of Business Management” Mr Turner calls out as the crowd goes silent waiting for me to make my entrance on stage.
I take a final look back at Liv as all the nerves disappear and my body begins to pull me up the stairs. I make my up to Mr Turner (without tripping!), shake his hand and grab the rolled up piece of paper in his hand before looking out onto the crowd to be welcomed by a group of crazy boys standing on their seats clapping and screaming my name! I let out a laugh as I move the tassle hanging off my graduation cap to my left side indicating that I had passed.
All the nerves that were once there are now gone and pure relief washed over my body. I carefully make my way down the stairs to the bottom of the stage as I await Liv’s name to be called out.
“Olivia Parker, Degree in Hospitality, Bachelor of Food Science”
Once again the boys are out of their seats yelling and cheering causing a few strange looks from the audience! I can’t help but laugh as them before receiving a tap on my shoulder. Turning around I almost trip Liv over with my hug of congratulations!
“We did it! We finally made it!”
