When I phase back, and put my clothes on, Jake is just pulling up on his bike. We both jog to the front door.
Carlisle opens the door, and says, "Hello Shelby, Jake, how are you?"
"Bella called me, Jake followed. Curiosity killed the wolf I guess," I say. I shove past him, and make my way up the stairs, taking three at a time.
"Shelby? Is that you?" I hear Bella ask. I walk into the room with everyone in it. Rosalie is standing in front of Bella, who is sitting on the couch.
"Close enough," Rose says when I take a step forward.
"What's your problem?" Jake asks, only a step behind me.
"Rose, it's okay," Bella says from behind her. Rose steps away, to reveal a sick looking Bella.
"You look terrible," Jake says as he sits down across from her.
"More like, hell bit her in the ass," I say as I sit down next to him.
"It's nice to see you too," Bella says with sarcasm. I smile.
"So are you gunna tell me what's wrong with you?" Jake asks.
"Rose, you wanna help me up?" Bella asks, throwing the blanket that was on her lap down the couch, revealing a very pregnant stomach with bruises littering it. Jake and I both stand up.
"You did this," Jake growls at Edward. Emmett grabs his right shoulder, and I grab his left arm.
"We didn't even know it even possible," Carlisle says. Jake rips Emmett's hand off, and rips his arm from mine.
"What is it?" Jake asks, venom dripping from every word.
"I'm not sure, ultrasounds and needles won't penetrate the embryonic sac," Carlisle says.
"I can't see it either," Alice says, "And I can't see Bella's future anymore."
"We've been researching legends, but there isn't much to go on. We do know that it's strong. And fast-growing," Carlisle says.
"Why haven't you done anything? Take it out of her!" I say.
"This is none of your business, dog!" Rose says.
"Rose!" Esme scolds, "All this fighting isn't good for Bella."
"The fetus isn't good for Bella," Alice says.
"Say the word Alice. 'Baby.' It's just a little baby," Rose says.
"Possibly," Jasper says.
"Carlisle, you've gotta do something," Jake says.
"No! It's not his decision. It's not any of yours," Bella says.
"Jacob, Shelby, I need to talk to you," Edward says. Jake and I look at each other, and we follow Edward out of the room, and outside.
"I always knew you'd destroy her," Jake says.
"Jacob, stop," I say, before it goes too far.
"She thinks Carlisle can turn her at the last minute. Like he did for me and Esme," Edward says.
"Can he?" I ask.
"Probability is slight," Edward says, "And if her heart fails... Look, I need you two to do something for me."
"For her," Edward continues, "Both of you have a connection with her that I'll never understand. Maybe you could talk to her, change her mind. You can keep her alive."
"And if we can't?" Jake asks.
"If she dies, you get what you always wanted. To kill me," Edward says. Jake look slightly happy about that.
We walk back inside, and we decided that we'd go in together.
"So, Edward sent you in here to talk to me?" Bella asks when we sit down.
"Sort of," I say.
"Though I can't figure out why he thinks you'd listen to us. I mean, you never have before," Jake says. We all laugh.
"Since when are you and blonde BFFs?" I ask pointing in the direction that Rosalie walked.
"Rose understands what I want," Bella says.
"What are you thinking Bella?" Jake asks, "Seriously."
"I know this seems like a scary thing, but it's not. It's like this miracle or something. I can feel him," she says.
I scoff, and Jake says, "So, it's a bouncing baby boy? Sorry I didn't know. Should've brought some blue balloons." I hit his arm.
"Jake," I say.
"It's just a guess," she says, "When I picture him, I see a boy. We'll see."
"You won't," I say leaning forward.
"I can do this. I'm strong enough," she says. I scoff.
"Come on. You can spout that crap to your bloodsucker, but you don't fool me!" Jake says.
"Everyone can see what that thing's doing to you. It's a killer Bella," I say.
"You're wrong," she says.
"And when you die, what was the point? Of me loving you, you loving him. How is that right for anyone? Because I sure don't see it," Jake says.
"Listen to me Bella. Please. Just don't do this. Live, okay?" I say. She shakes her head. "Please."
"Jake, Shelby, everything's gunna be okay," she says.
Jake looks like he's about to cry. He grabs his jacket and gets up.
"Jacob, don't go," Bella says.
"I know how this ends. And I'm not sticking around to watch," he says before he leaves. I get up and look at her, then follow Jacob.
Jake runs down the front steps to his bike, but he doesn't get on. He throws his jacket down, and kicks his bike, causing it to fly into a tree. He phases and runs off. I run after him, and phase too. Everything that just happened is flying through his head like a tornado.
He runs until he hits the road. He jumps into it, and almost gets hit by a truck. He jumps out of the way just in time, and I jump over the truck, and keep following him. He stops and howls. Then keeps running.
I hear Embry and Quil howl. The Leah and Seth. Then Paul, Jared, and Sam. We all meet up at the old lumber yard.
Everyone is thinking over each other, until Sam says We have to protect the tribe. What they've bred won't be able to control it's thirst. Every human will be in danger.
We're ready. Jared thinks.
No time to waste. Leah says.
Now? Jake and I ask at the same time.
We must destroy it before it's born. Sam says.
You mean, kill Bella? Seth asks innocently.
Her choice affects us all. Sam says.
Bella's human! Jake starts.
I finish his sentence Our protection applies to her!
She's dying anyway! Leah yells at me. I snap at her and tackle her to the ground.
That's my cousin you're talking about! I growl at her.
Sam growls We have real enemies to fight tonight.
Tonight? Jake and I both ask.
You both will fight with us. Sam says using his alpha voice. Everyone lowers their head to the ground showing their neck. Bowing down. Sam growls at Jake and I until we lower our heads forcibly, so that we bow too.
I will not! Jake says using his alpha voice and standing up as tall as he can.
Neither will I! I yell in my alpha voice and standing up next to Jake.
I am the grandson of Ephraim Black! I am the grandson of a chief! I wasn't born to follow you, or anyone else! Jake snarls. He rams his shoulder into Sam's, and runs off. I go to follow him.
If you leave with him, you can't come back. Sam says.
So be it. I say before running after Jake.
