23. The news
The first day, I chose to stay completely inside the cottage. I didn't dare go outside and I locked the door carefully. I sat by the window and looked out toward the woods. I felt small and I felt alone. I saw Niall in front of me and I wondered all day what it was that he would do. Should he go to the police?
I chose to put on the TV and I chose the news channel. I lay on the couch and I saw on the news to find out the latest.
"Hope's still missing, but today the police have received new evidence. They are silent on what it is about some people talking about that the father is involved in something new."
I sat up. Niall had submitted the evidence?
"Late in the afternoon, today, the police took in Bobby in for questioning and so far he hasn't left the building. Is he guilty? Has he and his son done criminal things together? Maybe they have killed Hope?"
I turned off the television. Just Niall wasn't stuck at the police station.
A car drove up to the cottage. I turned off all the lights and I turned off the TV total. I stood at the window and gasped when I saw Louis. Directly I went to the front door and opened.
Louis came to me and he smiled uncertainly.
"He's at the police station."
I got scared. I could just imagine how they would get Niall convicted of anything. Louis saw my reaction and he smiled reassuring.
"Bobby will perhaps be convicted. Police know all that he did to you."
Louis hesitated. He walked past me and into the house.
"He may be convicted of the money he stole, but I doubt it."
I followed Louis.
"Come on and tell me everything."
Louis sighed and sat down on the couch. He looked at me and I noticed he didn't have all the answers.
"I spoke to Nialls lawyer and he talks about that Niall should be released."
I realized that it wasn't the whole truth. I put myself down next to Louis and I looked down at my hands.
"So what happens now?"
Louis smiled reassuring and gave me his phone.
"Greg wants you to call."
"What should I say?"
Louis didn't have the answer to that question either.
"Just call him, he's worried and he's crying at home in his apartment."
"Hope, you need to come home!"
I hesitated. I heard that Greg sounded sad and upset.
"No, I promised Niall to hide."
I heard a sigh.
"He's with the police. He can end up in jail and you can't continue to hide."
I still hesitated.
"Do you know what Bobby did to me?"
"Well, I heard it. I'm sorry I never saw it coming."
I looked down at my shaking hand and swallowed.
Greg was sobbing on the other end and I heard that he began to cry.
"Hope, I'm scared too. My dad and my brother's in jail and..." he hesitated and stopped. "I know You have it worse."
Louis took comforting his arm around my shoulders and looked at me.
"I'll come with you." he whispered so that Greg didn't hear him. "I promised Niall to protect you and I promised not to let you go."
I looked up at him and nodded. Then I took up my courage.
"I'm coming home to you Greg, but just to talk."
"Okay that's better than anything!"
Louis hugged me and he held his arms tightly around my body.
"I promise to take care of you. Niall will leave prison and he will be free."
I doubted him, but I chose not to keep talking about it.
