The Face as Cold as Stone {APH}

Norway's face never changes. It's just there, emotionless, uncaring, unfeeling - like Norway has shut himself off from the world, and he no longer cares. Denmark is determined to find out why. Hetalia fanfic, eventual DenNor. Hetalia does not belong to me.

"Sorry," Hungary said, in her completely perfected Swedish accent. Finland nodded hurriedly, his cheeks flushed crimson as Sweden helped him stand.

As the two of them sat down at the table, Denmark raised his eyebrow at Denmark.

"What?" she laughed, then, in a quieter voice, "You think I could spy without my accents?"

Taiwan, evidently impressed by her evil Yaoi Empress's acting skills, nodded enthusiastically. She re-positioned the salt, another of Japan's inventions. Inside was a hidden camera, built especially for Hungary's yaoi purposes.

The waiter took Finland and Sweden's order, nodding politely and walking off to get them the food. Denmark swallowed down another mouthful of the food, then glanced again to Sweden and Finland's table.

"Turn your earpieces on," Hungary said, and Denmark quickly flicked at the almost invisibly small earpiece - another of Japan's ingenious inventions. The audio detectors Denmark had managed to attach to the duo's coats started to pick up conversation, and Denmark laughed as Finland made a complete fool of himself. Sweden looked up, and for a second, his eyes locked with Denmark's. Quickly, Denmark averted his gaze, shoveling even more of the food down his throat.

"I think he saw me," Denmark hissed, and Hungary sighed.

"If you get us caught..." she left the threat hanging in the air, but Denmark couldn't help but wonder how many miliseconds it would take for her to produce the frying pan from thin air.

Denmark shook his head, throwing her a grin and leaning back into the chair.

"No way! Course he won't be able to tell!"

Promptly, the earpieces picked up the sound of Sweden informing Finland that he thought 'that guy over there looks like Denmark, and acts like him too'.

"Hungary, what do I do? Start acting like somebody else?"

She shook her head. "You do that, and he'll realise you can hear him. No, keep acting like yourself but order something non-alcoholic, very loudly in a few minutes. I'll tell you to try something alcoholic, and you refuse."

Denmark was amazed by her quick response, which, from a distance, would seem like she was talking about something completely different. Her facial features were not showing concentration; they were showing amusement and joy. Evidently, it was a result of her entire yaoi spying career.

"Non alcoholic?" he muttered. "Right. Norge, we're drinking something when we get back. I got some Akavitt left."

Norway shrugged, as Hungary told him to smile, since Norway never smiled, and he should certainly smile to disguise them. The Norwegian, despite begging from Taiwan, Denmark and Hungary, still refused.

Denmark could only beg desperately; he'd been waiting so long to just see Norway smile. Maybe now, maybe... But then it would be a forced smile. And Denmark supposed that, all things considered, that wouldn't give him quite the same elevation.

"Whatever," Denmark sighed eventually, shrugging casually while his heart deflated in his chest. "Let's just see what they're saying."

"I must admit, I was worried about tonight," Finland was saying. Denmark found himself grinning; even an idiot like him could figure out that they were a good match.

"Y' sh'ldn't be worr'd," Sweden replied. Hungary's face lit up.

"They're perfect," she breathed as Finland laughed. For once, he didn't seem nervous any more.

"Well, I must admit I thought you were kind of scary... But that's just your normal face, though. Oh, sorry, I didn't mean it like that! I..." Finland stammered, and Hungary supressed an excited giggle. "I like your face," the Fin finished. "It's not as scary as I thought."

Silence.

Denmark could almost feel the overjoyed glee escalating within the Hungarian beside him, and he laughed.

"I..." Sweden seemed lost for words, gently taking Finland's hand. "Th'nk you."

The waiter picked that moment to bring the couple their food. Hungary growled, and Denmark grabbed her wrist. Taiwan tried to calm her.

"They'll return to the yaoi soon," she said, as Denmark dragged the furious nation back into her seat.

"Remember to order the drink," Norway said, calmly continuing with his meal.

"Right," Denmark grinned, standing up and calling to the waiter, in his Swedish accent, "Hey! Can I have a drink over here! Anything non-alcoholic, please!"

Hopefully, the wig and change of clothes and eye drops were working well enough.

"You should try something alcoholic," Taiwan said since Hungary was too busy fuming to do so herself, but Denmark shook his head.

"No. You can all get drunk, but it's stupid, and pointless."

The waiter came over to see what drink Denmark wanted, while Finland laughed to Sweden,

"Well, he's certainly not Denmark's human counterpart."

The waiter came over, took an order, and left. He returned with the Swedish drink, and left them all to talk.

Sweden would say something to Finland. Finland would say something back, sometimes stumbling over his words, sometimes speaking them effortlessly. All the while, Denmark kept wishing that maybe, he and Norway could be sitting in some Danish or Norwegian restaurant, talking, laughing, drinking.

When Sweden and Finland finally left, and Hungary announced the mission over, Denmark almost felt a sinking feeling in his chest. Because Norway was opposite him, occasionally answering to Denmark's random comments, and all the while, Denmark could pretend that Hungary and Taiwan weren't there.

That Norway liked his company, wanted to be there.

But, as they left, Denmark sighed. Never going to happen.
