I woke up, not knowing where I was. I blinked up at the ceiling above me, and suddenly my whole body seemingly exploded in pain. I gasped, which was a mistake. Pain shot through my ribs as I realized that he really had broken my rib. I decided to try slow, short breaths and after a while it got better. I ever so slowly looked at the clock on the wall. It was 2:48 PM. I needed to go to the emergency room.
It took 30 minutes to get up. I hobbled over to my room immediately and picked up my cellphone.
Ring, ring, ring, "Hello?"
"Chance?" I said.
"Rachel! Hey what's up ?" He asked. He didn't know about my dad, no one really did. My mom mostly ignored it. But chance was my only hope, so I had to either think of a lie or tell him the truth.
"Um chance I actually need help. I fell down th-" I gasped too quickly and pain shot up my ribs again. "I fell down the stairs and broke my rib. My parents are out of town and I really need help. "
"Oh my god I'll be right there. " he said quickly as he hung up. I smiled. He believed it.
Ten minutes later he was at my house, helping me get into his car.
"Chance I really can't thank you enough. " I said. I meant it, too. I realized that I hadn't even glanced in the mirror, and I probably looked like a wreck. He led me into the passenger seat of his car and smiled at me.
"It's nothing, really. I'd rather be helping my best friend than be in geometry. " he said nonchalantly. Best friends. What?
I never had a best friend before Eliza. Now I realize that she wasn't a real best friend. At all. Chance, on the other hand, was. I blinked up at him. I really should tell him, but then I wouldn't seem as strong as everyone thought I was. No. I couldn't do that.
I got into the car after another 10 minutes and we were off. Soon, we were cruising on the highway. We live about an hour away from the nearest hospital.
"So.. I heard about Anna," he said. I nodded.
"Yeah... " I said.
"I'm sorry. Really, I am. " he said as he looked over at me. I glanced over to him, and realized that we were pretty close. I feigned a smile and he took my hand. What was going on with him?
"'S okay. " I stated. He clasped our hands together and turned his attention to the road. I looked back over to him.
He had chocolate brown hair that was side-swept, but short. He was tan and had grey, deep-set eyes and dark eyelashes. He was actually cute , I thought to myself. I didn't really notice 'boys' like that. Or even girls.
"Look, I need to tell you something. " he said as he cleared his throat. "I.. Um.. I lik- no. I mean.. Me and Eliza aren't friends anymore. " he stuttered. Was he flustered?
"That's good... right..? " I asked. It might not be, I didn't know. He nodded quickly and kept his gaze firmly on the road.
"Hey," I said, pulling my hand up to turn his chin to face me. "What's wrong?"
He hesitated. "Nothing. I'm just.. Worried. About you. "
"Me?" I asked incredulously. Why would he be worried about me?
" well you do have a broken rib," he said.
"There's something more, isn't there. " I said. I knew it was true.
"Yeah... It's just that I saw some beer bottles in your living room.. And some blood. " he said. Crap...
"Um... They're not mine! " I said a little bit too quickly. He looked at me and raised his eyebrows. "They're actually not. They're... My dad's. And my blood. " I continued.
He gasped a little and looked over at me. "Did he..."
"Yeah... It's not as bad as it looks. Don't tell anyone, please. " I begged. I was getting tired of begging for the things that I need.
"Okay.. Okay. Just know that I'm here for you. I really should call authorities but... Do you want me to?"
"NO. I mean... No. Please don't. I'll be fine. " I said. He nodded and looked back out the window.
"I.. I didn't even know. " he said quietly.
"It's not that big of a deal. He just carried it a little too far, okay? " I said. He ducked his head, as if to nod. I noticed tears in his eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing " he said, cutting me off short. I opened my mouth as if to say something, but I clamped it shut and shut up for the rest of the ride.
"Well it does turn out that you do have a broken rib.." Said the doctor. "But we can patch it up easily. You do have medical insurance , correct? Now I'll just need your parents -" he droned on and on in an annoying, whiny voice that was surprising for a tall, bald guy. I gave answers when necessary, putting my aunt's email and phone number. I was sure she'd help out.
Luckily for me, Chance stayed with me the whole time. He held my hand and gave me reassuring looks the whole time. He spoke up for me when I couldn't , and he was acting... He was acting like a boyfriend. I was utterly surprised.
The doctor told me that he really shouldn't do anything, just send me home with a bunch of painkillers and tell me to take a few days off of school.
We were in his car when he said, "You know you could stay at my house. My parents wouldn't mind as long as you slept in a different room. "
"Really?!" I said. He laughed.
"Really." He said.
"Thanks so much! I love you," I said, not thinking. I blinked, realizing what I had just said. I had never said that to anyone. Not even aunt Lynn.
He hesitated for a moment, then replied "Yeah, love you too."
