“Why? What’s going on?” I looked over his shoulder and saw a bunch of girls outside the doors, singing something loudly. “...standing there, in my American Apparel underwear...” Ciara stood up and wiped her hands nervously on her skirt. “Oh my god.” Beck nodded, and grinned. “Don’t get too excited. They’re due to pull up-“ he looked down at his watch, “right about now.” As if on cue, a familiar black car drew up to the front of the Hilton, and Beck moved back to the door. Ciara brushed her hair out of her face and shot me a quick smile. “Just act normal,” she whispered. I frowned. What the hell? Wait on a second. Special guests, Ciara said. Fancy cars on the street. Screaming girls. Of course. I put the pieces together, knowing what was about to happen next but really, really, REALLY not wanting to believe it. Out of all the places in Sydney with vacancies for a summer job, I choose the one accommodating 5 Seconds of Summer. 'You.' 'Us.' Ashton walked up to the counter and grinned.

‘Want to meet early tomorrow for breakfast?’

‘Mhmm.’ Ciara snaked her arm around Luke’s waist and looked over at me expectantly. ‘Em, do you want to come?’

Ashton snuck me a glance and I shook my head lightly.

‘Thanks Luke, but you and Ciara enjoy your morning together. I have, uh, plans.’

I let out an awkward giggle, but Calum grinned and smoothed over it for me.

‘All good, me and Michael will come along.’

‘It’s a double date!’

Michael squealed and we all laughed, covering our ears as his high pitched voice bounced off the walls of the hotel corridor. We were all heading back to our rooms after a long day down at the pool, and I couldn’t wait to be alone for a bit. I had to plan for tomorrow...

Ciara rolled her eyes as Calum and Michael unlocked the door to their room and trooped inside.

‘Fine. See you tomorrow then?’

‘Bye! Night everyone,’ they cheekily grinned and closed the door softly. Across the hall, Ashton finished unlocking the door to his and Luke’s room and held it open, letting Luke and Cee inside. As he made to follow, I grabbed his arm, gently pulling him back out.

‘Ashton - I need to ask you something.’

He blinked a few times, then nodded, shutting the door softly and taking a spot leaning against the wall across from me, eyes on my own.

‘What’s up?’

‘I was wondering if you wanted to have another day out in the city tomorrow? I could take you on another tour, you know - I’m still your summer guide.’

I bit my lip nervously but started laughing when he nodded excitedly and moved over to stand in front of me, hands finding their way around my waist.

‘Well, I guess that’s a yes then,’ I giggled into his chest.

‘I’d love to go for a day out with you, Princess. What do you have planned?’

His dimples curled upwards and I shook my head lightly.

‘It’s a secret Ashton. You’ll just have to wait and see.’

He fiddled with a bit of my hair and nudged my nose.

‘Are we going shopping?’

‘Hey!’ I laughed and tapped his nose. ‘No guesses!!’

‘Fine,’ Ashton chuckled and drew away slightly so I could stand up straight. ‘I’ll just have to use my imagination.’

As he opened the door, I grabbed his hand one more time and spun him around, quickly placing my lips on his. His eyes widened in surprise before snapping shut and he responded with enthusiasm. Ashton wrapped his arms around me in a bear hug, holding me there for a moment. I sighed, and pulled back.

‘Goodnight Ashton,’ I whispered, and he stroked my cheek lightly.

‘Sweet dreams Emma,’ Ashton murmured into my hair, then let go, slowly backing into his room. I turned around and started to leave when the door creaked back open and his head popped back out again, with a cheesy grin plastered on his gorgeous cheeks.

‘So we’re not going shopping then?’

I rolled my eyes and kept on walking, Ashton’s laugh echoing down the corridor after me.

Rolling over onto my back, I screen captured the internet browser on my phone, looking back over the details for the Sydney Centrepoint Tower visit I’d planned for tomorrow.

I wanted to show Ashton how much I appreciated him by taking him on a really fun day out around the city - he had been part-right, there was a little bit of shopping involved, as well as a nice lunch and a visit to one of Sydney’s major tourist attractions. Biting my lip, I stenciled in one more place - a coffee at the Rock Bandit Café before we would head back to the hotel. My phone beeped in my hand.

I smiled as I dropped my phone down on the table and snuggled back into my sheets, unable to stop grinning. I didn’t deserve someone like Ashton, so I sure as hell was going to try and be the best I could be for him today.

I sighed and checked my watch again. Unsurprisingly, Ashton was late to meet me and I really wanted to get going, because I had hired a cab that would come in half an hour that would take us further into the heart of Sydney. The foyer was busy at this hour of the morning, people checking in and out, the lift dinging every minute and hotel staff rushing around like crazy as guests arrived. I'd snagged a seat on a lounge over in the corner, away from Olivia, who was sternly watching the orderly chaos from her office - even if it was my second day off, I didn't want to meet her eye. Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my dress pocket.

ashton: sorry!! be down in 2 x

I rolled my eyes and tapped my feet back and forth, unable to contain my nerves. Today had to be perfect.

‘Nervous? Or just excited?’

Two big hands wrapped over my eyes and I giggled.

‘Ashton, I know it’s you.’ He uncovered them and let me gaze up at his tall figure hovering over me. ‘And maybe a little of both,’ I answered truthfully, nodding.

‘I’m all ready to go - I got my positive attitude -‘ he checked it off one finger, ‘my gorgeous smile,’ he grinned widely for me, making me laugh out loud, ‘and I also packed lots of these for you...’

Ashton leant forward and gently placed his lips on my own, sneakily wrapping an arm around my waist and lifting me into a standing position against him. When we drew away, I opened my eyes and gave him a hug, smiling happily and literally bouncing with excitement.

‘Thanks for bringing the kisses, Ashton.’ I winked. ‘They’re going to keep me going today.’

Ashton took my hand and tugged me towards the door.

‘Well we can’t have you running on empty can we?’ I giggled and he smiled at me as we pulled up to the front door. Through the glass, I could see the lingering paparazzi, smoking cigarettes and leaning against their cars, cameras at the ready. Ashton looked worried.

‘Alright Princess, it looks like there’s going to be a lot of press and people with cameras and shit outside... just stay close to me, okay? I don’t want to lose you.’

I kissed his cheek.

‘It’s okay Ashton. I’m famous. I get this all the time.’

‘Ha-ha,’ he poked my nose, ‘but I’m serious. I don’t want you to get hurt. Sometimes it can get,’ his mouth twisted, ‘pretty ugly.’

‘I’m ready.’

I squeezed his hand reassuringly and let him pull me closer, wrapping his arm around my shoulder protectively. And then Beck was pulling open the door, and the photographers were jumping up, snuffing out cigarettes and pulling off their camera covers.

‘Ashton! Look this way!’

‘Is Luke’s new lover Calum?’

‘Ashton, over here!’

‘Ashton, who’s your lady friend?’

‘Is it true that you’re dating the girl from your recent music video?’

‘Are the rumours that Michael Clifford has quit the band true?’

‘Ashton! Ashton, if you could spare a few moments-‘

I felt like laughing my head off because the whole thing was so unreal. It was just like in the movies - camera lights flashing, people everywhere, like a swarm around us as Beck and a few other bellboys held back the crowd and let us past. Ashton’s grip on my hand was tight, and he leant down closer.

‘You’re doing great, Princess,’ he whispered in my ear, ‘but maybe we should tell them that the whole Cake romance isn’t real?’

I shook my head lightly, feeling dizzy headed with all the excitement and giggled.

‘No, we don’t want to break down their dreams.’

‘Fair enough.’

Ashton helped me into the waiting taxi and shut the door tight, pressing a bill into Beck’s hand. He grinned appreciatively at us and waved goodbye, still pushing back people as the car drove away. Ashton let a huge sigh of relief and finally withdrew his arm from around me.

‘I’m sorry Princess, I hate it when that happens...’

‘Shh, it’s all good. It was fun,’ I smiled and snuggled up to him. ‘Don’t worry Ashton. Just sit back and relax, today’s my day to show you the city.’

He rubbed a hand through his hair and I finally had time to notice what he’d worn for our day-out. Ashton made anything look good, but now he was smartly dressed in a casual band tee and black coat, trademark skinny jeans and converse sneakers. I grinned when I saw he was wearing the same red bandana I’d worn on the night of the concert. Suddenly I felt very underdressed in my sundress and boots.

‘Wait - how’d the taxi guy know where to go?’

I laughed at his puzzled face.

‘I messaged the company earlier, telling them where to go so you wouldn’t find out before we got there.’

‘You sneaky little shit,’ Ashton shook his head in disbelief and I grinned sweetly.

‘You’re going to have to work harder than that to get it out of me, sweetie.’

Ashton gave me a searching look before pulling me closer and cupping my face in between his two hands and smiling.

‘Would now be a good time to give you one of those kisses I brought?’

I nodded.

‘Come on Ashton, it’s going to be the most amazing view - we’ll be able to see the hotel, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, the city centre - all the things we might not get a chance to visit before you go back on tour.’

‘But I thought you were scared of heights?’

I shook my head and smiled.

‘I kind of am, but this is alright. We’re not climbing up narrow stairs that could break any second. You’ll enjoy it Ashton...’

I frowned a little, sad that my surprise wasn’t as good as I planned it to be. Quickly sensing I was upset, Ashton grabbed my hand and pulled me into a hug.

‘Hey, I’m sorry, don’t be sad Princess.’ He glanced at the lift that would take us up 30 floors. ‘We’ll do it, okay? Just because I love you.’

I blushed, even as he said it in a joking way.

‘Are you sure?’

His eyes flickered back onto the waiting queue by the elevator.

‘Yeah, of course. ‘ Ashton squeezed my hand and smiled nervously. ‘You planned this for me. I want to do it all - with you.’

I kissed his cheek and tugged him over towards the line in front of the lifts, where people were queuing up to get to the top floor. Suddenly, he dug his feet in, pulling me to a stop too.

‘What’s wrong?’

Ashton leant down, his curly hair brushing my cheek lightly as he whispered something in my ear.

He blushed.

‘I’m sorry, I should’ve told you earlier but I-‘

‘It’s okay,’ I brushed him off and squeezed his arm for reassurance. ‘We’ll find another way up.’

We were standing on the second level of the Centrepoint Tower, the highest point in Sydney - kind of like the Eiffel Tower of Australia. 28 floors up was the rooftop, where I’d been a few times with my friends. But I couldn’t ever recall a time when I’d been standing in this same spot with a guy. Who was also from a world famous band. And who also turned out to have vatorphobia - a fear of long elevators.
