As we walked out of the kitchen, no one stopped doing what they were doing, but I felt everyone's eyes on us. Ashton was walking behind me, and was whistling happily, as if nothing had happened.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I tripped, almost falling over the coffee table.
Ashton grabbed my elbow, and caught the pizza box before it hit the floor. He looked over at Michael, who was guiltily looking at his phone.
'Michael, what the fuck, can you hold your horses? This is your pizza Emma's risking her life for.'
I looked up at Ashton, because I could already hear the smile in his voice, despite his tone.
He winked at me, and for the first time, I grinned back. Calum's voice was still echoing in my head. Be nice.
'He's right you know, Michael. I could've died at the hands of this pizza-'
'She could've suffered a fate worse than death even-'
'-just because you wanted another slice.'
Michael rolled his eyes, laughing.
'You melodramatic little shits. Thankyou for the pizza. End of story.'
Ashton and I laughed, before dropping the box down beside Michael. I sat down on the floor again, between Calum's legs, and Ashton jumped onto the couch to sit-crosslegged beside Luke.
Ciara leant forward and turned down the volume of the TV.
'So tell us. What happened?'
I made a face.
Calum leant over my face and poked my cheek.
'What happened in that kitchen that magically solved all your problems with Ashton?'
'I had no problem with Ashton.'
I sighed, ignoring the red that was spreading across my face.
'Ashton, you can explain. I'm so done with these people.'
He stuck out his tongue at me, and Luke raised his eyebrows, watching the exchange.
'Luke, can you not?' I snapped, and he held up his hands.
'Sorry, sorry. Ashton?'
Ashton brushed his hair out of his eyes and smiled.
'Emma is my official summer guide!'
Michael punched the air and slapped Calum and Ciara a hi-5, while Luke bro-fisted Ashton.
Woah, slow down.
'Hold on - why does everyone else know about this? What?'
I scrunched up my nose and Calum cheekily patted my head.
'We knew Ashton's secret plans long before you did. Actually,' he leant back, hands folded behind his head proudly, 'it was my idea in the first place.'
'You should see your face, Emma. You look so surprised!'
'The number #1 rule of being in a band is that you tell eachother everything,' Luke chimed in.
I groaned. I should have known.
'You too Cee?'
'How else would Ashton know that your biggest wish is to travel the world?'
'I am surrounded by a bunch of sneaky little shits.'
I rolled my eyes.
‘I’m going back downstairs.’
I began to pick up the empty pizza boxes when Ashton leant over and took them from me with his strong arms.
‘Here, I got it - come with me to the rubbish chute?’
‘Sure. Bye guys! Nice to meet you, Calum.’
I felt everyone’s eyes on us as we walked to the door. Calum shot me a wink, and Ciara wiggled her eyebrows. Assholes.
The door shut behind us and we walked down the corridor.
‘Sorry for that.’
Ashton snuck me a look before blushing.
‘The boys. When I met you, like, after I realised you were working here, I asked them to help me get you on my side kind of.’
He smiled a little sheepishly, and I rolled my eyes at him.
‘I really hated you for a bit, you know.’
Ashton scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
‘Yeah. It was a bit obvious, funnily enough. Especially seeing as you’re the only girl who’s acted like that since I joined the band and became popular.’
He mimed quotation marks around the word ‘popular’ and I shrugged, smiling.
‘I don’t really like guys who think they’re top-shit...’
He stopped and turned around, making me almost crash into him front on.
‘I was acting pretty silly, wasn’t I?’
I shook my head, grinning now in disbelief at his inability to drop a subject.
‘Yeah! You did! Now, are we going to the rubbish chute, or not?’
He giggled, and let me push him the rest of the way down the corridor, pizza boxes teetering on his flat palms.
As we were dropping them in the bin, he paused again.
‘Am I still a dick?’
‘I never called you one.’
Glancing up, I saw Ashton raise an eyebrow and I sighed.
‘Fine, yeah I did. But that was before. No, you’re not being a dick at the moment. You’re different from what I thought.’
I punched him lightly on his shoulder, and my fist collided with his hard bicep. Owwww. Luckily Ashton didn’t notice. He beamed.
‘Good. That’s Step 1. Not being fake Ashton around you.’
‘This is the real you?’
I turned away to pick up the next box, letting a smile slowly creep across my cheeks.
‘I like this Ashton.’
His eyes followed me as I reached for bin.
‘That’s good then.’
He sounded nonchalant, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw him blush and grin to himself. We both settled into a happy silence, squashing the remaining boxes and sliding them down the chute. Ashton waited for me to get back into the corridor before speaking.
‘Do you want to maybe do something tomorrow?’
Hmmm - play it cool.
‘I guess. What do you have in mind?’
He pulled on the ends of his hair, thinking.
‘Well, you can come and hang out with the band again? Like, between shifts?’
You hated this boy a few hours ago. This could end badly.
‘Sure! Sounds good.’
Did I say you could speak?
‘Sweet. Can I come down and get you?’
‘I’ll be at reception again most likely, with Ciara. It’s greeaaat.’
Ashton laughed at my sarcasm, and I hid a smile. He had an adorable laugh.
‘I’ll see you tomorrow then. Thanks, Emma-the-Summer-Guide.’
I giggled and stuck out my tongue.
‘I’m going to regret doing this ‘guide’ thing, I can tell.’
‘Oh, you have no idea what’s in store for you!’
He winked, and began to walk down the corridor away from me.
‘I don’t even understand what I’m meant to be doing!’ I called after him.
‘You’ll find out - it’s going to be fun!’
He turned around, his sweet voice echoing off the walls. Flashing me a thumbs up, he grinned, dimples appearing, and I couldn’t help but grin back.
‘This better be worth it, Irwin!’
‘I’m worth it, Davies!’
There’s the Ashton I know.
‘Judgemental, assumption-making hotel-staff girl!’
I giggled and blew him a kiss.
‘You know it!’
Minutes later, his laughter was still ringing in my ears.
I checked my watch for the 3rd time in 10 minutes.
‘Ciara, it’s 2 o’clock already.’
She had been on her phone for the last half an hour, and still didn’t look up, so I pushed my chair over behind her and peeked over her shoulder. The screen was lit, and a picture of Luke and Ciara filled the screen.
It was the most adorable thing I had ever seen. Ciara was perched, arms awkwardly wrapped around what looked like Luke’s guitar. He was standing tall behind her, arms looped around her shoulders, supporting her hands, holding her fingers of the right fret. Ciara was looking down at the guitar, but Luke. Luke was concentrating on something else - her face. His eyes were bright and watching Ciara with sweet intensity.
‘Who took that?’
She jumped, and clicked off her screen.
‘Fuck you, Emma.’
I laughed at her scowl.
‘Hey, I gotta give you credit - that was the cutest thing I’ve seen since meeting Calum. Luke is looking pretty star-struck...’
I nudged her softly, and she looked down at her hands. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips and she blushed.
‘Do you really think so? A lot of the 5SOS fam said so too! Michael took it, and tweeted it last night.’
‘5SOS fam? And is tweeting like on Twitter?’
Ciara laughed and rolled her eyes.
‘I keep forgetting you’ve been living under a rock. You need more educ-ashton. Tonight, lesson #2 - come back to my room after we visit the boys.’
More educational lessons??
‘Fine. So long as you tell me all about you and Lukey!’
I made a kissy face at her and she swatted me away.
‘There’s not much to tell, so let’s say it’s a deal, Em.’
Suddenly, the phone rang loudly, bringing us back to the present. I pushed off the back of Ciara’s chair and spun over to the receiver, snatching it up.
‘Hello, Emma speaking, from the Hilton Hotel. How may I help you?’
‘Um, Emma? Hi - it’s Ashton.’
Ciara raised an eyebrow and smirked. I rolled my eyes and took the phone with me into the common room, leaving the door ajar.
‘Hi - how’s the job going?’
‘Depends on which one. The hotel one’s going okay - your job hasn’t even begun yet. Right?’
I swear I could feel his smile through the phone.
‘Yeah, about that job. Want to come up now?’
I peeked out the door - Ciara was back on her phone and there wasn’t a guest in sight.
‘Yeah, we’re fine with that.’
‘Sweet - I’m sorry, I’d come down to meet you but I just - CALUM!’
What the fuck was that? I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it, holding it as far away as possible. Ashton’s voice came spouting out from the speaker.
‘CALUM, I SWEAR TO GOD - hold on, Michael! - I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL THROW YOU OUT THE WINDOW!’
‘Ashton?’ I giggled. I could hear scuffling at the other end, and Ashton breathing heavily, as if running.
‘Are you okay over there?’
‘Emma! Shit, I’m sorry. Yeah, it’s just that - LUKE, put down the saucepan! Emma, I’m so sorry, Michael accidentally unplugged the Xbox and - CALUM FUCKING HOOD. DO THAT ONE MORE TIME AND I WILL POST YOUR NUDES.’
Calum’s muffled voice came through the phone next.
‘Aw Ash, don’t be a party pooper. That’s meeeeaan.’
‘As if he’d post them. He’s a pussy.’
Michael. I grinned.
‘Oh yeah? Just watch me,’ Ashton growled, and I laughed out loud.
‘Hey, Ashton? Me and Ciara, we’ll be up in half an hour okay? Go fix whatever mess you’re in.’
His voice came through clearer this time, echoing as if he’d just walked into the bathroom.
‘Okay. Can’t wait to see you guys again.’
‘Me too. Talk later Ash.’
I heard a loud knock through the phone and the sound of Luke’s whiny voice came through, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying...
‘LUKE. I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE BUSTING. JUST PEE OUT THE WINDOW--- ’
The dial tone cut off the rest of Ashton’s sentence and I burst out laughing. Idiots. All of them. Who knew what to expect this afternoon!
