I paused, knocking softly on Ciara’s door before letting myself in quietly.
The room was dark , but I could see a light on at the end of the hallway, so I carefully slid off my shoes and padded across the carpet, towards the glow.
‘Cee? Are you in here? WoAHH!’
I jumped back from the doorway as if it was electric. Ciara squealed and pulled the covers up to her chin, accidentally rolling Luke off the bed and he fell to the floor with a thud and a muffled groan. There was a moment’s silence as Cee stared at me with wide eyes, blushing fiercely. Suddenly, Luke’s head popped up from beside the bed, rubbing his temple and ruffled hair.
‘Ow, fuck, that hurt.’
I began to laugh.
‘Guys! When I said to use protection, I wasn’t actually expecting you to get it on!’
They both turned bright red, and looked at eachother.
‘We were just kissing, I swear to god!’
Luke bit his lip and Ciara glared at me.
‘Well, we were, until you burst in here, unannounced...’
I held my hands up in surrender.
‘Hey, hey! You told me to come - educashton, remember?’
Luke perked up.
‘Educashton? Ashton as in Ashton Irwin? Edu, as in cation?’
He raised an eyebrow and I mentally slapped myself. Great. Another hole to dig myself out of. Luckily Ciara saved me.
‘Lukey, sorry, time to go.’
I smirked. Lukey, huh?
She pulled of the sheets and stood up, grabbing his hand and pulling him back into the hall, still glaring at me.
I emphasised his name, and he stuck his rude finger up behind his back as Ciara led him out, whispering in his ear. While I was waiting for them to finish with their goodbyes, I sat down on Ciara’s desk chair, infront of a little desk. Her laptop was open on top, and as I looked at it, it gave a little ‘boop!’ and a notification popped up on the screen - a new Skype message. I opened the preview.
Michael5SOS: Tell Emma he won’t be :(
What, who? Who won’t be? Won’t be what?
I looked back down the hallway, where I could see two shadows, leaning very close together. Ciara was distracted, it looked like.
I maximised the Skype window and clicked on the blinking notification, scrolling upwards to read the whole conversation.
Ciarahemmo1996: Emma’s pissed off at Ashton again.
Michael5SOS: I know, he wants to talk to her?
Ciarahemmo1996: Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen. He keeps switching moods, it’s confusing her.
Michael5SOS: He’s not normally like that...
Michael5SOS: After we checked in, he’s been all weird. Like, kind of normal, but he’s having all these weird perks.
Ciarahemmo1996: Like yesterday?
Michael5SOS: Yeah. I think it’s definitely something to do with Emma.
Ciarahemmo1996: Does he like her though? Emma reckons he doesn’t.
Michael5SOS: :/ I don’t really know - I’m fairly sure they both agreed already that it was friends or nothing.
Michael5SOS: Well anyway, fine, I’ll tell Ashton to leave her alone for a bit then but does Em want to come hang with me and Calum tomorrow while you’re off on your date?
Ciarahemmo1996: I’ll ask her tonight, what if she says no? Will Ashton be there?
Michael5SOS: Tell Emma he won’t be :(
I jumped, and looked up - Ciara had silently appeared next to the table, a pained look on her face.
‘Did you read it all?’
I looked down, sheepishly.
‘Yeah, I’m sorry. It was personal, I shouldn’t have-‘
‘Don’t worry. You needed to know anyway.’
I looked up at her pleadingly now.
‘Cee, I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into with Ashton. I don’t know how to get out of this deal. I mean, for how long am I going to have to put up with these...’ I scanned the screen for the word Michael used, ‘...perks?’
She sighed and looked thoroughly bothered.
‘I don’t know. Apparently, Ashton’s just been acting differently... well, you read it.’
I made a face.
‘I’m in way over my head here. What am I even doing?’
‘Hey, relax. It’ll be fine. Luke told me-‘
‘Luke? Is he that guy who’s taking you on a date tomorrow?’
‘No sex, okay?’
I grinned at the blush spreading across her cheeks.
‘Just kidding, just kidding. Let’s get this educashton all over with first then? And then you can tell me all about your Lukey.’
I ducked as a pillow came flying at my head.
‘That’s fucking awful,’ on-screen Ashton exclaimed, pouting at the camera.
‘Yeah, well, it’s true. If you have a freckle on your finger, you’re going to die of cancer,’ on-screen Michael reiterated.
I giggled at his poker-face. Ciara and I had been watching these Keek things for the past half an hour, and now we were watching an old live-stream video. The more I watched, the funnier they got, and when the 4 of them all managed to squish into the same blown-up donut ring, I cheered along with on-screen 5SOS, my laughter mixing with theirs.
As the video kept playing, I noticed a link on the YouTube sidebar for a suggested video called ‘Pre-Show Rituals: 5SOS’.
‘Cee, can we watch that one?’
She looked at me strangely, before smiling and clicking on it.
It started off showing the boys prepping for a show with a soundcheck. I was sitting there watching, thinking about how unreal it was - the boys, 5 Seconds of Summer, the ones a few floors above me, were world famous. And I knew them. And one of them maybe liked me. Suddenly, another clip filled the screen, jerking me out of my present train of thought. I sucked in a breath.
He was cutting up a shirt or something, I don’t know. But I sat there like a freaking dummy, staring at his chest, the thin line of hair running down the middle of his toned stomach, the slight shadows of his abs and obvious muscle bulges.
‘Sorry, er, what?’
I looked up to see Ciara staring at me, and I blushed.
‘Sorry, I was, uh, thinking.’
She shot me an apprehensive look.
‘Whatever. As I was saying, you should get Twitter, probably.’
‘Why? What’s the point?’
‘Well,’ she hesitated, ‘You can follow the guys and me, as well as other people, and um, meet fans and stuff?’
Like, 5 Seconds of Summer fans?
‘Are they those people called 5SOS fam or something? You said it once, I think.’
She nodded, obviously happy that I remembered.
‘Yeah! That’s right, the 5SOS fam. Anyway, they’ve all been talking about you online - don’t get angry! - because, um, there’s a few photos of you up, and they’re all interested to know... well, anyway, I’ll show you.’
She turned around and started tapping on her keyboard, before a new blue webpage loaded on the screen.
Welcome to Twitter, it read. Connect with your friends - and other fascinating people. I scoffed.
‘Here - look...’
I pushed my chair back from the table as Cee clicked on something else and my face filled the screen.
‘Who put this up? Eww! You mean 5SOS fam can see this picture?’
Ciara smiled behind her hand.
‘The 5SOS fam, yes. Ashton posted it on his account, so of course it got a lot of attention. I mean,’ she leant in closer, ‘he does have 8k followers. But it’s not even a bad photo!’ she hastened on at the look on my face.
Great, let me add that to the list of things Ashton’s done wrong.
‘Please, please tell me this is the only photo online.’
‘Um, there’s a few more,’ Ciara giggled nervously.
A minute later, she’d shown me the picture of me on Calum’s shoulders from earlier that day (on her Twitter), a photo of me sleeping on Calum’s lap (on Michael’s page), and a picture of me and Ciara eating pizza with our tongues out at the camera (posted by Calum and shared by Luke through something Ciara called a ‘retweet’). She also showed me a tweet from Ashton:
Ashton5SOS: Staying in yet another hotel for the next month - except someone here makes it much more than just another hotel for me #mysummerguide #5SOSBackInAus
I glared at the hotel, a hollow pit in my stomach.
‘What’s he playing at? Posting something like that to all of his fans?’
I snatched up my phone.
‘I’m going to tell Ashton that he can take his drumsticks and shove them up his-‘
Ciara quickly shut the browser, erasing a little bit of my bad feelings.
‘Emma, just leave it. There’s nothing you can do now about it anyway. Really though, if you get Twitter, you can keep an eye on him, you know, make sure nothing is posted again like that.’
I turned my phone over and over in my hands.
‘I’ll think about it, okay? I promise Cee, but I’m sorry, I really have to go. I need to be alone and just sleep. Or think. This summer wasn’t meant to be complicated.’
I was surprised but relieved when, instead of arguing, she wrapped me in a hug.
‘Em, of course I understand. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Sleep tight, then.’
She pulled away with a little smile, looking concerned. I was silently thankful for her letting me go without a fuss. It was definitely not what I needed tonight, anyway.
‘Thanks Cee, you too.’
Half an hour later, I was curled up in my bed, sleeping restlessly. Ashton was in all of my dreams.
