(I'm American and have no idea what Australian people say for certain things so I'm deeply sorry if I get things wrong)
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who couldn't hear the music"
So this is it. This is Barrington High School where I will be attending for the next 3 years of my life. I hate commitments and, for me, 3 years is a long time. I'm starting at Barrington in year 10 or, for Americans, Sophomore year.
High school has been hell for me so far, but that was at Valley High. It wasn't so much the teachers or schoolwork as it was the students that made me hate it. To them, I was "that girl". I was the one who everyone hated for simply fact that I'm different. I guess being blind in one eye will do that to you.
I was born with a rare case of eye cancer. It's rare to even be born with cancer, let alone an unusual kind of cancer. This will make you cringe but I had to have one eye removed and replaced with an identical, fake eye that doesn't help me see. It sort of looks real, though. The kids at Valley noticed my weirdness and began to make fun of me. They didn't know it was cancer, and I never plan on telling them.
I have been NEC for about 4 years, which is a long time, but the cancer could come back at any time. For those of you who don't know, NEC stands for No Evidence of Cancer.
Anyway, enough about cancer, my name is Iris Anne Beccket and I'm 15 years old. I'm starting at a new high school. My favorite color is a bluish green. I believe that peanut butter is life in a jar. That's about it for me.
The bell rang, signaling the beginning of another year of torture. I am going to miss Summer so much, especially because this school looks more like a prison than a place of education. "Have a nice day at school, sweetheart, and make new friends!" My mom tells me as I get out of our Ford minivan. I love how she said "new" friends as if I had any in the first place.
"I will, Mom," I promise her, making sure to keep a poker face when I know I'm lying terribly.
I wave goodbye to her as she drives away. As soon as she's gone, I sleepily drag myself up the million flights of steps this school has. Ok, it only has 3, not a million, but still, what's the point?
A kid knocks into me as I walk past him in a hallway. "Hey, you new?" He asks.
"Yep!" I say, hopefully sounding cheerful. "Where's the office?" I ask. He points down the hall and tells me to take a left at the end of it. I thank him and begin to walk the way he directed.
"Hey, kid?" He yells after me. I turn around to face him.
"What's your name?"
"Iris, and you?"
"Vince. Why do you have a fake eye?" He asks rudely, but he immediately covers his mouth as if he didn't mean to say that. "I mean," he stutters, "uh, it's just not something ya see every day. It looks nice, though!"
"Um," I answer, "I've had a problem with my left eye since I was born." I run away to the office to hand in my "new kid form" and to receive my schedule.
"Hello," the lady at the front desk greets me. "What's your name sweetheart?"
"Iris Beccket," I state. She nods and hands me a slip of paper. I trade my forms for the schedule.
"Here's your lock for your locker and the combination is 17452." I nod and smile at her as I leave.
The schedule reads:
1st class: English
2nd class: Maths
3rd class: World history
4th class: Science
5th class: Religion
6th class: language
7th class: Art
8th class: music
I am going to need a partner because I have no clue where any of these classes are. I head to my locker where I find most of the books I'll need. I grab my English book and turn to the locker next to me. A pretty girl with blonde hair stands there. Her eyes are scanning a music sheet, but I interrupt her to ask where English is.
"Oh, it is down this hall, take a right, head down the flight of stairs, and to your left it should be there. If it's not, then this school has changed since last year!" She smiles as she picks up her books and happily strolls to her next class.
I follow her directions which lead me, sure enough, to English class. This class has a young, male teacher, so I have high hopes for this class. Well, I did until what happened next when...disaster struck!
