~~I bite my lip as I debate how to reply, it sounds so tempting but my parents would kill me if I missed their party. I look down at Gater who’s frowning at me impatiently. I sigh, “I’ll be down in 2 minutes,” I say and he smiles in satisfaction.
It’s not hard for me to grab my cloak from the coat cupboard then slip out of the back door. In the past I’ve snuck out with Gater loads of times but they were normally in the middle of the night when my parents were asleep so they never knew. This time it’s a little different because it’s likely they’ll figure it out but I don’t care, a few hours at the festival is much better than spending my evening being a porcelain doll that everyone pats and admires.
I swing my cloak over me then jog over to where Gater is standing around waiting for me. Me and Gater have known each other so long that he’s become a part of me. We’re like twins in a way and if it came down to it I’d trust him with my life. I love him as a brother and not as anything else despite the pestering of my other friends. He’s a good looking guy and they’re all wondering why I haven’t tried to go out with him. I just tell them that my parents wouldn’t approve which is true but not a real reason, I don’t care what they think.
Gater is standing waiting for me with his thick blonde hair shining in the sunlight. I smile at him and he flashes his warm, familiar smile at me. “Good choice,” he says as I reach him. I laugh a little then we run out of the grounds and onto the road. It takes a few minutes and I’m out of breath for a moment, like I always am. “Which way?” I ask him and he points down the road towards the market I nod then slide my arm through his.
We walk towards the market and soon loud tuneful music fills my ears. It makes me smile and I already know that I’ve made the right decision to come down here. Gater looks down at me as I start to sway to the music and we walk faster.
The market is full of colour and laughter. There’s a band playing on stage and people dancing round on the concrete floor. Various stalls are set up round the edge of the market handing out drinks and food. The pubs are full of merry laughter and people are already stumbling out of it. I smile and drag Gater towards the dancers. “Madame” he says, bowing jokingly and I give him a small push. We then join the crowd and skip around the market, dizzy with excitement.
“Okay, I need a drink,” Gater says after about half an hour and I nod, both of us are out of breath and I can see a little sweat dripping from his brow. He walks towards the line for drinks and I make my way towards the edge of the market. When I get there I lean against the wall and take a few deep breaths. As I breath in the smell of donuts and sweet lemon aid my mouth waters with desire, this party seems like the kind of thing I’d read about in fairy tales as a kid.
“Hey there gorgeous,” a gruff voice says and I open my eyes to find out who said it.
My eyes lock with a pair of hard black ones full of coldness and a dark humour. I take in the rest of the man that stands before me. He’s lean and muscular with tanned skin and a mop of curly dark hair. His knuckles are bruised and cracked and I can see faint scars running up his bare arms, this is not someone I want to mess with.
I swallow nervously and stop leaning against the wall, hoping that Gater will come and find me soon. I stare at the man in front of me who nods then takes a swig from the beer bottle in his hand. When he takes it from his lips he throws it on the floor, not wanting it anymore. “So where are you from?” he asks, his words sounding slurred and as he tries to take a step forward he stumbles a little. I take a step away from him but end up hitting my head on the wall. “Hey don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you,” the man says then laughs coldly.
I frown at him then he takes another step towards me, he’s close enough now that I can smell the bitter alcohol on his breath. “You’re very quiet,” he whispers and I try to move away from him but I’m stuck against this damn wall. “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” He mumbles then look down at my lips. He has his hands on either side of my head, leaning against the wall. He lowers them so they’re sat on my shoulders then he’s leaning forward and his lips are on mine. He’s kissing me and I’m frozen on the spot, not able to do anything.
I suddenly gain control of my muscles and I push him away then I swing my hand back and slap him across the face. It’s hard enough to knock him off balance so as he stumbles away I quickly slide past him into the crowd to find Gater. I wipe my mouth trying to get rid of the feeling of his lips on mine, I shudder and try to forget about it.
I see Gater standing across the market and am about to try to reach him but a wailing sound suddenly fills my ear and the music stops. Helicopters suddenly appear in the darkening sky and men start lowering themselves from them.
This sets the crowd into a panic and they begin to run down the street taking me with them, away from Gater. I try to shove my way back towards the market but the current of people is to strong and all I can do is let them take me where ever they’re going.
Suddenly I feel someone’s hand on my arm pulling me out of the crowd and into the small pub I was stood outside of earlier. When I look to see who it is I see a tall friendly looking man with short brown hair and soft blue eyes. He smiles at me “Sorry about that, it looked like you needed help” He says. “Thanks, I did,” I reply and give him a small smile then turn to leave.
“I wouldn’t go out there yet,” he says and I see that the crowd hasn’t settled yet. I nod then look around the bar. There’s a few other people in here but the person that catches my eye is standing in the corner raising his eyebrows at me. It’s him, the guy that tried to kiss me.
