Pushed Over the Edge
“No!” I said, taking note of his expression. He knew I was challenging him, and he was trying to prove that he was impenetrable.
“Well you better believe it Zayn. It was meeting you and Louis that ruined my life. He threw me in jail despite the fact I was innocent! And if I could go back and rewrite history, I would make sure I never met you!”
I could see pain in his eyes. I knew there was something else that was in a sense perhaps unrelated to his anger toward me. If anything, maybe this something else was what was causing his anger toward me and the rest of us, especially Louis, to flare the way it was.
“What’s going on?” I finally asked. “What’s causing you this immeasurable pain?”
I could see tears forming in his eyes. “Nothing that you would care to know.”
“Of course I care about what you feel” I said, attempting to put my hand over his shoulder, but he immediately pushed it away.
“Just get out of here!” he said calmly, but he still sounded angry.
“Not until we talk about this.”
“Can’t you take a hint?!”
“I know you want me out of your life. Thing is mate, now that I’m innit and know something is definitely going on with you, I’m not going anywhere even if you beg me to.”
His chest started expanding in and out from breathing heavily, his anger rising up again as he glared at me with his intense angry eyes. “I’m being serious. Get out of my sight now!”
“No!” I got firm with him.
“Fine, then I’ll be the one who walks away!”
He grabbed his iPhone, sweater, and walked out. I followed him downstairs, where the rest of my mates were at.
“Wait!” I called out to him as we walked downs the stairs. “I said wait!” he still walked away ignoring me. I finally caught up to him, and grabbed him.
“What?!” he yelled.
“Don’t ever walk away from me when I call you!”
“And who the hell are you my father?!” he balled his fist and aimed at my face, but I grabbed his hand before anything could happen.
“Don’t make me restrain you boy!” I said angrily. “I’m not messing around, and if you don’t calm down, I’m the one who’s going to put you down!”
“Then go ahead and do it!” he shouted.
I glanced over at my mates, all of them surprised by this untamed version of the boy we once knew, who was once our friend. Sure even then, he was untamed, but this was more than what he was like before. It was like he had a beast inside. I had no idea that Mehmet would turn into the hardheaded boy that he was now. He was uncontrollable, rebellious, and was willing to punch and hit if he felt he had to.
I looked into his sad innocent eyes. For a brief moment I could once again see the tenderness of a little boy that he once had when we all met him, when he was thirteen years old.
For a moment it seemed like I had finally tamed him, but just when I thought I had him restrained somewhat, he pushed me with all his strength, and punched me in the face.
“Don’t think that I’ve forgotten. And now you think you can waltz back into my life like nothing happened?!” he yelled out. “Get out and leave my sight. Your presence offends me! Don’t ever come back or get near me! And forget that path that brought you here!”
I laughed. “I’ll come by…whenever I feel like it. Of that you can count!”
He wiped more tears off his eyes, and stormed out the door. He jumped into his bike and rode off.
Moments later his mom parked in the driveway. She got out, holding a bag of groceries and walked in. “Was that Mehmet?”
“He lost control” said Niall.
Carmen looked worried all of a sudden. “I don’t know what to do to help him.”
“What’s going on?” asked Liam. “He seems so angry and lost.”
Carmen’s eyes started tearing up. “I thought he was doing better, but clearly he’s more lost than he’s ever been.”
Her words worried me a great deal. What was going on with Mehmet?
“Did something happen after you all moved back here?” I finally asked.
She nodded. “I think we need to sit down so I can explain.”
We sat in the dining room.
“It all happened so fast, I think” she began, eyes streaming out of her eyes. “I’m pretty sure that Eduardo never saw it coming.”
I’d only met Eduardo once when he came to visit Carmen and Mehmet when he was on holiday. He was attending the University of Paris at the time for a semester.
“Mehmet was the one who answered the door when the police came to give us the news that he had been killed in a shooting, and that he didn’t make it.”
Her news hit me like a wrecking ball, then suddenly it all made sense to me. Mehmet’s attitude, everything. However, something in his mom’s expression said that that wasn’t the only thing troubling Mehmet.
“But something tells me that’s not all, isn’t it?” I asked, expecting the worst.
“No, it’s not” her eyes were red with tears.
Carmen took a moment to collect her thoughts, and Louis went and sat next to her and put his hand over hers. Ok, at this moment, it looked like he really did fancy her, which again would be really weird because this was Mehmet’s mom we were talking about.
“After what happened to Eduardo, things went from bad to worse. He and this girl named Dasia started dating, and she took his mind off of his brother. His anxiety got worse, his attacks were frequent to the point where he would end up in the hospital because they would debilitate him badly enough” she stopped for a moment. Louis handed her a tissue, and cleared the treks of tears. “She helped him a lot, and things started going back to normal, somewhat.”
“So she was like a Godsend?” said Niall.
“Yes” said Carmen.
“And what else happened?” asked Liam, waiting impatiently for the rest of the story to unfold.
“Dasia ended up pregnant, and Mehmet instead of hiding it, he came clean about everything.”
“She was pregnant with his child?” asked a very surprised Harry.
“Yes” she confirmed. “She was pregnant with a boy. And the both of them intended to name him Eduardo.”
The rest of us looked at each other with disbelief. I could not believe that Mehmet was potentially a father, but I didn’t see any baby things anywhere, and that just raised more questions because there were no baby toys lying around.
“And what happened?” I finally asked.
She took a deep breath. “Dasia was murdered weeks before she was due to give birth” she said, and broke into tears of pain. “They tried to save the baby, but they said he was too premature, and that there was no way to save him.”
Hearing everything that has happened to Mehmet, finally made me realize why his behavior was so erratic. He lost his brother, his wife, and his child. Carmen also confirmed that Mehmet got married at sixteen for the sake of his child and girl, but that was taken away from him.
“So that’s why he’s been acting out” I said.
“Precisely. And he’s only isolated himself from people, except this one girl named Paola, and her brother Marco who recently left for college” she said.
“And after the loss of his child, and his wife, how have things gotten for him?” I asked.
“He’s been depressed and withdrawn. He’s not the same boy he was. He’s changed. He’s so different now” she confirmed. “My son has become so untamed, so headstrong, so incredibly hard to get through to.”
“He’s Indomable” I said.
“Yes” she chuckled, but the brief smile she had, faded immediately. “He’s always been Indomable, never letting others rule him. He has an untamed heart; un Corazón Indomable.”
“He certainly does” I said. “Since seeing him, I’ve noticed his untamed behavior. He’s really headstrong and unwilling to listen.”
“I know, and he’s not necessarily rebellious, at least not with me, but at school he gets into fights a lot, and I’m just surprised he hasn’t gotten suspended. He even once beat this kid up and left him pretty…” she trailed off. “You know what I mean.”
“Yes” I said, remembering how Mehmet took care of that bully earlier today without even trying. “I’ve seen how his anger can really get to him.”
“Yes, and I’m worried because all that anger building inside him, is not good. It’ll be a disaster for someone with an anxiety disorder.”
“Has he gone to the doctor or gone to a counselor?” Niall asked, his expression laced with worry.
“He has seen a doctor, but he refuses to go see a counselor, even though I’ve begged him to.”
“I’ll try to convince him” I said.
“Good luck. I haven’t been able to, and I’m his mom” Carmen said, sounding defeated. “He’s too headstrong. He doesn’t listen.”
I sighed, and gave her a stern look. “Look, perhaps I might have not treated him right in the past, but I can assure you that I won’t give up on him. I know he’s a good lad, with a good heart.”
“I know” she wiped tears from her face. “But he has an untamed spirit. He’s always been like that even as a little boy. And I always tried to keep him from going over. It was not an easy task to try and keep him in place, but I tried my best.”
“I know you did” I assured her.
“Maybe I didn’t” she lowered her head briefly.
Her cell phone started ringing. “Hello?” she answered. Her face suddenly became twisted with fear. “Is he ok? What happened?!” she asked frantically, that for a moment it seemed as if she was about to start crying. “Ok, I will be there soon!”
“What happened?” I asked, fear rising in the pit of my stomach.
“Mehmet, he’s in the hospital!” she panicked.
“What happened? Did they say anything?” Niall asked worriedly.
“I don’t know” Carmen said frantically, putting her hands over her head, confused and lost. “My little boy…” she started crying.
“It’s ok” Louis wrapped Carmen in a hug. “I’m sure everything’s going to be ok. I’m sure of it ok?”
Carmen grabbed her purse, phone, and we all headed to the SUV. I drove to the hospital as quickly as I could, trying my best not to break any traffic laws.
