Hidden Suspicions Revealed
I arrived at the park, worried about this little meeting. I looked for the bathroom that I was instructed to look for to retrieve the rest of the directions. One part of my mind was telling me that this was a bad idea and that I should just run back home and forget about this crusade. The other more rational part of my mind on the other hand, told me to move forward and to not look back. I had a strong feeling that something was at stake. My instincts were screaming at me to not turn away, because if I did then Mehmet would be the one who would get hurt. That was something that I was not going to allow to happen.
I continued looking for the bathroom, scared that someone here would recognize me as Zayn Malik from One Direction. It was the last thing I needed.
Finally, I found the bathroom and entered. I locked the door quickly, and went for the sink where I was told I would find instructions. I looked underneath, and found a small white envelope taped. I opened it, and inside was a piece of paper, instructing me to run down to the Gold Line station in old town South Pasadena. That was maybe a few blocks west. I was instructed to go all the way to Old Town Pasadena, and get off at the Memorial Park Station and to head to Copa Vida on Green Street.
I headed to the train station, and just as I arrive the train arrived. I got in and a few stops later we headed down a tunnel, and I was finally at the train station. I got out and walked and headed to the coffee shop. About ten minutes later I arrived, and the note said to wait all the way in the back. I walked all the way to the back and sat down. I observed the coffee shop, and it was quite cozy and like a place one could come and relax at. I also saw several people with their laptops while they ate and drank.
Fifteen, then twenty minutes passed by. Where was this person I was supposed to meet? I was beginning to lose patience sitting here.
“Zayn?” I heard a familiar voice, a voice I had not heard in a long time.
Turning around I was preparing myself for shock. And as soon as I laid eyes on him, I immediately knew he was no foe. But at the same time I didn’t know if I was seeing things, or if he was actually here. “Eduardo?!” I asked, my heart thumping about as hard as Mehmet’s was earlier. “How did...” I started mumbling. “I thought you were…dead?” I looked at him from head to toe while wondering if I was losing my mind.
He laughed. “I had a feeling you would have had that expression.”
“But why didn’t you tell me it was you?”
“I had to make sure you and Mehmet were safe, especially him. He is after all my little brother.”
I sighed. Eduardo was still alive and kicking. For a long time we all believed he’d been shot and killed at the University he was attending. That clearly had not been the case. Now, I had too many questions I needed to ask, that I needed answered badly.
“How is my little brother?” he asked.
How was I supposed to tell him all he had gone through? I had to tell him because he was his brother and had a right to know. “Is there a safer place for us to talk?”
“There’s an apartment a couple blocks away that I’ve been crashing at.”
“Let’s go” we both headed out of the coffee shop.
We walked down the street a couple blocks, and entered an antique looking building. It had apartments and clearly people lived here. We walked into the elevator, and exited on the fifth floor and walked to the apartment. Entering, it was quite nice and antique but at the same time modern looking. It was a loft and it was quite spacious. I looked around, wondering if he has been here this whole time, or if he’s been wandering around like a nomad. Those were questions that were better asked at a more appropriate time.
“Sure” I said, and he handed me a water bottle and we both sat down.
“So, how long has it been since we last saw each other?”
“Over two years.”
He chuckled. “Yes, we had lunch at that one Mexican restaurant, what was it called?”
“One of the few Mexican restaurants in London.”
“Yes” I felt awkward, unsure of what to even say. “So where have you been this whole time?”
“I know, but where have you been?”
He took a swig from his bottle, then put it down steadily. “I’ve been in Lebanon this whole time. I only just got back a few days ago.”
“Why did you go into hiding? Everyone thinks you were killed in that shooting at the university?”
“I was shot. Lulú shot me.”
Ok, somehow I wasn’t surprised that Lulú had shot him. It just seemed like the kind of thing that she was capable of doing. And one of my mates was dating her. Now, I knew more than ever that she was dangerous, and how she did in fact frame Mehmet.
“Why did she shot you?”
He sighed loudly. “Lulú is my ex-girlfriend from when I went to NYU. I left her because I found out she had cheated on me, and so I broke up with her.”
That was news to me. I was shocked to learn his direct connection to Lulú, which was something that neither of us knew about. “So you two were together at one point, breaking up with her is hardly a reason for her to try and kill you.”
“Well I haven’t finished telling you everything…and believe me it gets worse.”
“How much worse?”
“I don’t even know what word to use to describe how much more worse it got.”
Ok, so this definitely wasn’t going to be good. I was going to have to brace myself for whatever else he told me.
“I found out Lulú was with some guy name Louis, but I didn’t know it was your Louis.” Ok also news to me. “Apparently she was cheating on me with him, and when I discovered her and what she was doing, I told her she was lost to me. And so she swore revenge on me” he started looking like he was feeling pain just thinking about this. “So I started hanging out with my long time childhood friend Darine with whom I was always very close to. And one night when she and I were going to hang out and just have dinner in her apartment, I walked in someone had stabbed her.”
Ok, Lulú was beyond dangerous. “What else?” I had to know more.
“Darine told me that it was Lulú…somehow, I don’t know how she did it, but she set the video recorder on her iPhone, and recorded the whole thing…and before she slipped away” tears started to fall out of his eyes, “she pointed to where the phone was hidden, and watched the video.”
“And it confirmed what Lulú had done.”
“So how is it that Lulú was not arrested?”
“I was so angry that I was not thinking straight. I went to confront her, in an area where I figured she would not try to do anything, because she would have left witnesses, and told her I knew what she had done and that I was going to expose her. At that she pulled a gun and shot me on the arm, took the phone, and then shot me in the chest.”
“So she destroyed all the evidence?”
“No, I saved the video in a flash drive, and hid it before I went to see her.”
“So there is a chance that we can bring her down?”
“Yes, but only one other person knows about this.”
“Harry?” I frowned.
“I knew I could trust him.”
“How long has he known?”
“A month ago. I contact him, and told him to keep it a secret. Because if more people knew I was alive, then it would be dangerous.”
“So that explains why Harry has been quieter than usual.”
“I guess…but I did this for Mehmet. She also confirmed to me what she did, that she planted the money in Mehmet’s backpack, and I recorded the conversation as well with my phone too.”
“So Mehmet was always innocent of…” I felt my heart sink now that I knew there was evidence that could clearly exonerate Mehmet completely.
“I know what how you treated Mehmet after he got you and how you told him to…”
“Don’t say it, please” I felt my eyes watering up now. “I hurt an innocent boy who had not done anything wrong, who was also my best friend.”
“I’m not going to hold it against you. You’re as much a victim of Lulú’s as Mehmet is.”
“I drove your little brother into a dark place. A dark place that he’s been in because of me. How can you not be angry at me?”
“Because…Mehmet loves you. He looks up to you like a big brother. He’s lost a lot in his young life already. I’m not going to take one more thing away from him.”
Eduardo was being really cool with me. I expected him to tell me to ‘bugger off’ the same way I had told Mehmet after he was released from jail. “I want to hear the conversation!”
Eduardo pulled down a frame and behind it was a safe. He punched in a code, and then it opened. He pulled his phone out, turned it on, and then played the conversation.
I know you did it. I have the proof in this phone! Eduardo said
Well then I guess I will have to kill you…just like I did that little bitch you traded me for!” I heard the evil laugh that I heard not too long ago, from Lulú herself.
You think that gun’s going to scare me?
A gun shot went off, and I could hear Eduardo’s pain from the gunshot.
I get rid of whatever insects standing in my way! she laughed. And just so you know, since you’re not going to be alive long enough to say anything, I framed your stupid little brother, drugged him so he would lose credibility, and now he’s in jail for planting the boys’ money in his bag. So Zayn booted his ass away!
Eduardo cut the recorded conversation. He was just as disturbed as I was. Now, the evidence was clear. She did frame Mehmet, tried to kill his brother, and thought she could get away with it. “We need to report her to the cops.”
“No, if you do she’s just going to run away. And I can’t allow that to happen. Otherwise, my plan to make her pay for killing my best friend, will be for nothing.”
“We need to stop her now!” I said desperately.
“Darine’s sister Nyssa, has been helping me out. She wants revenge as much as I do.”
“Lulú is dangerous. She cannot hurt him…I won’t let her!”
“Just protect my little brother from her. Protect your friends, and make sure that Louis knows the kind of person she really is.”
“He won’t listen.”
“Oh believe me…he’s going to listen once he knows for reals who she is and what she’s done.”
“And how exactly is that going to happen?”
“Just leave it to Nyssa…she’s going to make sure he sees who she really is” he grinned. “Now, it’s best if you leave.”
I immediately left, and headed back home, making sure that no one saw me, or that Lulú wasn’t around somewhere, lurking to make sure that no one discovered her. Now, I was really scared, but not for my life. I was scared for Mehmet’s life, Louis’s life, my mates’ lives, and of course Eduardo’s and Nyssa’s lives. Lulú had taken Darine away from Nyssa and Eduardo. That was something that I knew neither of them could just leave to chance. Plus, now knowing how dangerous Lulú really was, I knew I had to protect Mehmet as well as his mom.
Lulú clearly mentioned in the recording, that she would not hesitate to get rid of any insect that stood in her path. If that insect proved to be Mehmet, or any of my mates, I had to protect them.
