4. Scene 4
We now find John in a hospital room, hooked up to many machines to keep him alive. His family sits to the side worrying for him. Hark! The doctor appears!
Mr. Layne and Mary Simmons, how are we today?
How do you think? My son is LAYING ON A HOSPITAL BED!
Calm down Mary, the doctor was just asking a question.
Layne reaches over and holds Mary's hand. The doctor carries a false smile, then it disappears as he remembers why he came in.
I really am sorry for this Mrs. Simmons. However, I am here for more than an apology. I really hate to be the bringer of news but...
(In a deeply dramatic tone)
Your son is in a coma!
(In utter shock and disbelief, then a cry of tears)
Mary runs out of the room in a fit of tears.
However, I do know a way of bringing him back. Neurosurgery.
Do it. I don't care what my wife says, you will do it. When can it be done?
In twenty minutes time. I assumed you would say something of that sort.
SCENE ENDS AS NURSES COME IN TO PREP JOHN FOR THE SURGERY. FADES TO BLACK WITH THE CRIES OF MARY STILL RINGING THROUGH THE AIR.
