When I was told that I was Divergent, It all made sense. It opened the door to a new faction. Maybe it confused me more than it helped. Though my choice was clear, it was not made. The word "Divergent" followed me to the choosing ceremony. It follows me still. The aptitude test was supposed to place me somewhere. But now, it seems it has made me more lonely than ever. 4. Divergence

It has been a month since our basic intelligence tests. The tests consisted of being put under simulation while they evaluated how logically we responded to different situations. Those who did not achieve a certain score of intelligence were "kicked out".

However, Scarlet, Caleb, and I still remain among the initiates.

We have all been researching for our final phase of initiation. My brother, Caleb chose the aptitude test as his research focus. Scarlet chose the chemical makeup of the Dauntless initiation serum and I chose the Divergent. As I make my way into the elevator, I brush some dust off of my light blue denim shirt. I am wearing blue jeans and my hair is tied back in an Erudite style. However, I have refused to wear glasses as has Scarlet.

As the elevator door opens, I make my way to the room at the end of the hallway.

I knock three even times and wait a few seconds as Jeanine Mathews opens the door.

"Hello Beatrice. Come in" She says while leading me into her office. "Please sit" She says gesturing to a chair in front of her desk chair.

"I called you in because I have noticed that you have a very interesting research focus. May I ask, how did you learn about the divergent?" She looks at me. I can tell she is suspicious.

I remember Tori's words

You are what they call Divergent

That's the real reason why I know.

Divergence is extremely dangerous

I don't know why it's dangerous, but something tells me that I shouldn't go telling everyone who asks.

"I read briefly about it in an old textbook. They seem...dangerous" I say as calm as possible. Jeanine is smart. Lying to her is a difficult task. However a smile curls up on her face when she hears me say the dangerous part

"Is that so? Well, the reason I asked to speak to you was mostly because you showed a superior intelligence ranking and an interest in the Divergent. That is exactly the kind of person I am looking for to assist me in a rather confidential task." She smiles "However, I first need to have your word. You may not tell anyone about this experiment, nor may you try to inhibit proceedings of this 'experiment'. If you break the terms of this agreement in any way, shape, or form, there will be severe consequences. However, if you assist me and allow us to use your knowledge and Intelligence to our best ability, there will be great opportunities for you, Beatrice Prior."

A knot builds up in my throat. I am reluctant to take part in whatever Jeanine is planning. But the Dauntless within me craves the mystery, the danger.

"You have my word"
