When I was told that I was Divergent, It all made sense. It opened the door to a new faction. Maybe it confused me more than it helped. Though my choice was clear, it was not made. The word "Divergent" followed me to the choosing ceremony. It follows me still. The aptitude test was supposed to place me somewhere. But now, it seems it has made me more lonely than ever. (Word Count 2,997)

1. Caleb

"Beatrice...Beatrice wake up" I heard the voice as I dozed out of my sleep. I saw the shaggy hair as I opened my eyes.

"Caleb" I say, still sleepy.

"Beatrice, can we talk?" He says as I lift myself up. It was always a little too cold in my home. But, comforting ourselves with the extra energy is considered self indulgent so I have learned to ignore it. However, tonight seemed colder than usual.

"Sure" I say. Judging by the darkness peering in from the small window at my bedside, it is well into the night.

"So what was your result?" He asks strait away. The question I had feared though I don't even know why. I don't even need to ask him what he means because it is obvious. My aptitude test results. Tomorrow is the choosing ceremony. That's what he came here to talk about.

You are what they call Divergent

Divergence is extremely dangerous

"Abnegation" I say after a short hesitation. Caleb nods.

He has always been smarter than me. He must know I'm lying.

"How about you Caleb?" I ask in a desperate attempt to change the subject.

"That's what I came to talk about Beatrice" he says as he looks down at the floor.

"I mean, I can't say I'm surprised" He continues.

"It wasn't abnegation" I say. He looks up and into my eyes.

"No" he says. "Erudite" He whispers.

The voice echoes in my head

You have aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite

"So is that your choice then?" I ask.

He nods.

“Beatrice…We should think of our family…But.  But we must also think of ourselves.” He says as tears begin to build up in his eyes. It is the first selfish thing I have ever heard my brother say. He had always been the perfect Abnegation boy but it seemed as if something was breaking within him. Something he had held inside all of these years. Something guarded by grey clothing.

"And well...I just wanted to say goodbye" He says as he looks over at my window.

Is this truly the last time I will speak to my brother? My choice of Abnegation seemed so obvious, but now I don't know what to think.

As Caleb left my room that night, the words followed me back to sleep.
