I stood in the mirror and straightened my tuxedo. I combed back my hair and flashed a smile. I needed to look good for Katniss...um...did I just say that? Nevermind. It's just Katniss, the girl I've known since forever. We're only friends, that's how it's supposed to be and that's how it will be. I walked out of the room and was met by Effie and Katniss's prep team.
"Where's Katniss?" I asked.
"Oh, she's in the limosine." Effie replied. Well that's fancy. Before I walked out the door, Chris stopped me.
"I trust you." she whispered. I know what she meant. She was worried that Katniss and I still had...a connection. I could never do anything to hurt Christine. Even if I already had...I cleared my head and walked out the door and someone opened the door to the limo for me. I stepped inside and sat down opposite Katniss. My eyes widened at the sight of her. She was wearing a golden dress with a strapless, tight bodice and a poofy skirt. Instead of her hair in some ridiculous capitol style, it was left down and cascaded in her natural waves. Her whole outfit seemed way more natural than usual.
Someone shut the door and the limo drove off. The next few minutes were followed by awkward silence. "So..." I finally said. "How are the kids?" I cursed myself in my mind. What kind of question was that.
"Oh, I left Christine to take care of them." She was capable of taking care of children, although she didn't seem to like Katniss very much. We tried starting some more conversations but we failed miserably. Once the car finally stopped, someone opened the door and Katniss got out first, her golden heels clattering on the ground. I got out next and straightened my bow tie. Someone led us to the entrance which was a huge silver gate. The driver looked into small camera and showed an ID badge. The gate clicked and swung open.
We went inside one after another into a gigantic building. As soon as we entered, swarms of people came to greet us. Although the capitol had fallen, I still wondered how the new government had gotten the money to pay for this. I wondered what happened to all the poor people in District 11 and the remnants of 12 and 13. "Oh, Gale, you're so lucky to know Katniss Everdeen. Where is Peeta? Wasn't he supposed to be coming to the ball?" A bunch of people kept asking me questions, most of which were about Peeta.
"Um, he is sick right now. Sadly, he had to remain home." I answered quickly and tried to find Katniss who was also being surrounded by fans. "Katniss, follow me." I pulled at her arm and dragged her to the hallway near the bathrooms. There weren't many people there, so we could actually talk in private. I could always tell when Katniss was about to cry. She rarely did, but I could sense when it was about to happen.
"I...just...I can't-" I pulled her into my arms. We stood in silence for a bit and I hushed her. "Everyone keeps talking about Peeta. I thought I could handle it, but it's just too much." she sniffled.
"I get it. This isn't just going to go away. We both know how this goes. Sometimes, you feel like it never happened, but others, you feel like it happened yesterday. It's a lot to take, but your the toughest girl I know." She cracked a smile and we walked out of the hallway hand in hand.
