3. Old Friends
I remember the very pin that was with Katniss from the beginning. It hurt Katniss to let it go, but it was in the right hands. I pinned it on to Willow's blue dress that matched her eyes. We ate as much as we could of the cake and stored the rest. Then we went outside to the meadow that Katniss and Gale used to go to. Gale. The subject still pained me. Gale was a great guy, really, except for the fact that he was still in love with Katniss. Or at least I think he is, I mean how could he not? He had left for District 2 to try and get away from it all.
District 12 was inhabitable once again, as lots of people had started construction here after the fall of the Capitol. There weren't as many people here as there once was, but it was growing in size.
We settled down on the blanket I had laid out in the grass. We spent the day playing in the meadow and eventually, venturing off into the woods. We had gone there less often after the games but things weren't as bad as before. Katniss took us to the little lodge next to a small pond. We swam there and spent Willow's birthday there until dusk. Then we packed up our things and started heading home.
I held on to Rye's hand as we walked through the forest. As it got darker, more animals started to come out. It became a much darker place. The trees loomed over and looked like scary figures. The animals eyes were hungry. The fence came in to view and I let go of Rye's hand and went over to it. I bent down to pull it up and thankfully there was no longer electricity running in the fence. Even though it was no longer illegal to cross over to the woods what with the Capitol gone and all, some of the animals in the woods were still dangerous. The fence kept them at bay.
Willow crawled under the fence who was then followed by Katniss. I waited for Rye to crawl under as well. After a few moments I called, "Rye? We're going." He didn't answer. "Rye? Are you there?" Still no answer. I turned to Katniss only to find a knife at her neck with a masked man wielding it. She gripped tightly on to Willow. I saw the worry in her eyes as a figure came from the woods with Rye limp in their arms. "Rye! What did you do to him?!" I ran to the figure with full force but was stopped by another masked man who tied my arms behind my back. "Don't worry. He's not dead, he's just...sleeping. I injected a serum that will leave him unconscious for quite sometime." A sly smile played across the strangers lips. "What kind of monster are you?" growled Katniss.
"I could say the same about yourself." Then the masked man revealed himself. Except it wasn't a he. "Hello, Katniss." It was Coin. And she wanted revenge.
