I opened the door and I saw Calum, Ashton and Michael all sitting on the couch. They turned to me and I smiled a little bit because I was excited to surprise them.
"So guys I have a surprise..." I trailed off and then I opened the door a little bit more and Kara walked into the door frame and I saw all the shock on their faces.
"Kara?" Calum asked hesitantly.
"Hi." She squeaked out putting her hands in her jacket pocket.
"How? What? Luke answers please." Ashton said confused.
"I found her when I was standing outside of my house about to get in my car to come over here. So I thought might as well bring her over here." I said happily and right then I felt a gust of wind and I saw that Kara was being engulfed in a group hug. I looked at her face and saw the small amount of tears falling from her face as she hugged them.
"Why are you here?" Michael asked excitedly.
"I wanted to check on you guys. And I also wanted to tell you guys that I never wanted to leave. I did it because I couldn't live the way I was living anymore. I just needed a way out." She sniffled as more tears started to roll down her face.
"Kara come on sit down." I said pulling her toward me and sitting beside her on the couch.
"Can I ask you guys a question?" We all nodded in response. "Do you guys hate me for leaving? If you are I understand because I hated myself for a while after when I left."
"Kara we could never hate you. Sure we were a little mad at first but after a while we realized you couldn't continue living that way." Calum said.
"Thanks." She sniffled smiling.
The rest of the time we spent bonding all over again. But it wasn't as hard as I thought it was. It turned out Kara hadn't changed much since she left so it didn't take long to get back into the way things were before. We chose to watch a movie and being the idiots we are we let Kara pick and she picked a Disney movie (shocker).
The visit seemed to last forever but then I looked at my watch and saw it was almost midnight and I groaned knowing I had to get back home before Laura started worrying. The good thing is that tomorrow was Saturday and none of us work on Saturday. Kara and I said our goodbye's to the guy's and we went back outside.
"So Kara what are you doing tonight?" I asked.
"I was gonna take the bus home. I live a couple towns over so it's not that long of a ride." She said looking down the street.
"No come stay at my place." I suggested.
"Luke won't your wife think it's weird that there's a stranger sleeping at her house?" She asked in a duh tone.
"I'll talk to her tomorrow morning don't worry. Come I have a spare bedroom you can sleep in." I said waving my hand towards the car. She sighed and followed me to the car and strapped herself back into the passenger seat. The drive was quiet since Kara fell asleep but it was peaceful. I looked at her out of the corner of my eye and realized she looked very content when she slept. Sometimes her face would twist in confusion and it made me smile wondering what she was dreaming about.
"Kara we're back you need to get up." I said shaking her shoulder and she nodded slowly getting up.
She slowly got up and I helped guide her into the spare bedroom and into the bed causing to wake her up. She rolled over and faced me. I crouched down so I could look at her.
"Kara you have to go to bed now." I giggled.
"I missed you Luke." She said catching me off guard a bit.
"I missed you too Kara." I said in response.
"Luke I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you like that by leaving, but I felt the same way and I still do. I'm never going to be able to forgive myself for doing that to someone as amazing like you." She said wiping her eyes with the blanket on the bed.
"Kara I'm ok. But now it's your turn. Now you have to move on, because I know whatever guy you end up marrying is going to be the luckiest person in the world." I smiled.
"But how? How do I move on from hurting someone I loved the most? How do I live with myself knowing that I did that?" She asked.
"Kara you have to believe that it's going to be ok. It also helps if you realize that sometimes moving on is the only way you will finally be able to heal. Now I have to go to bed because Laura probably heard me walk in and is wondering where the hell I am." I said. She nodded and rolled onto her other side so she wasn't facing me anymore. I got up and walked out of the bedroom closing the door behind me.
When I got up I saw no one was up yet. I quietly walked over to the spare bedroom and opened the door a crack and saw that Kara was still sleeping. I closed the door and went and sat on the couch and turned on the TV in the living room. Once I found something to watch I went into the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea and went back and sat on the couch.
"So tell me again why there's a stranger sleeping in our spare bedroom." Laura yawned coming to sit beside me on the couch.
"That's Kara. She's uh my friend from high school. I haven't seen her in 20 years so I told her to stay the night instead of having to take the bus home last night." I said setting my tea on the table. "Collin up yet?"
"No he stayed the night at a friend's house last night." Laura said and I nodded in response.
"Uh sorry to interrupt but I was just wondering where the bathroom was." Kara said awkwardly coming to stand in the living room.
"It's fine, and it's the room at the end of the hall." I said smiling, Kara nodded and disappeared into the hallway.
"Are you driving her home this morning?" Laura asked.
"Yeah I was gonna drive her home after lunch or earlier if she asks." I said turning the TV off and going into the kitchen and putting my empty tea cup in the sink.
"Well the sooner is the better." Laura said quietly.
"You don't have to be jealous. Kara and I are friends and that's it. I love you." I said.
"If you're sure and I have an appointment this morning so I'll see you later." Laura said disappearing into the bedroom to get changed.
"So Luke what are-"
"Love you Luke bye." Laura said coming up and kissing me before she walked out the door grabbing her car keys as she left.
"Sorry about that Kara, say that again." I said.
"She doesn't like me does she?" Kara asked.
"No she does." I said quickly.
"Luke just tell me I can tell she doesn't." Kara said putting her hands on her hips.
"Ok no she doesn't. She's jealous of you and I don't even know why I didn't tell her you and I dated." I said realizing what I said and feeling horrible. "Kara it's not like that."
"No Luke I understand. Can I go home now?" She asked.
"But you haven't even been here a day." I said.
"I know but I have to get home, I have a cat to take care of and I have to do some stuff for work." She said walking to the front door.
"I guess so let me get dressed." I said sadly going into the bedroom and changing. Once I got back out I saw that Kara was already in the car.
"Where do you live?" I asked pulling out of the driveway.
"Waterhill. I'm pretty sure it's two or three towns over. I'll tell you where to go when we get there." She said quietly.
"Kara listen I didn't tell her we dated because then it would have been even more awkward. Like you saw she doesn't like you already, so if she knew we dated it would be even worse." I said.
"Luke I get it trust me. It's just awkward because it's hard talking to someone who doesn't know that I dated her husband, and randomly showed up after not seeing him for 20 years." She said.
"Yeah I guess. Ok so now where do I go?" I asked as I turned into Waterhill.
"Go down this road and then turn left at the third set of lights you hit." She said pointing down the road. We soon reached her house and she got out without saying a word. I tried to get her to come back but she was already in the house before I could say anything.
I drove back onto the road and I saw a note taped to the dash. I pulled over and took it. I opened it and realized it was a letter from Kara.
So I realized I'm not very good at saying things that I need to say. So I decided it would be easier if I wrote them down. What I wanted to say is that Luke I still love you, I really do, also the reason I told you why I can't date is fake. I can't date anyone because I still love you and I can't move on from you. You are my everything Luke and I hate myself for it. And knowing now that for 10 years you hoped that I would come back and then finally giving up broke my heart even more then it was. I now know I can't love ever again because I can't stop loving you and that I made you deal with that. I just it could have been different.
Once I finished reading the letter I felt a couple tears roll down my face and soon I was sobbing and banging my fists against the dashboard. I hated her for doing this to me, but I hated myself for hating someone like her, and I hated myself for thinking I still loved Kara when I know I love Laura.
"What do I do now?" I asked myself. And before I could tell myself what I was doing I was back on the road driving back to her house.
Once I arrived at he house I didn't even bother knocking. I barged in and found her in her kitchen currently feeding her cat. But once I walked in her cat ran away and I saw that I had scared Kara.
"Luke what-" And before she finished I kissed her, and soon my arms snaked my way around her waist and I felt her arms wrap around my neck. I soon pulled away looking at her angry.
"Why do you do this to me?" I whispered.
"Luke I'm sorry-"
"No why would you write this? Did you think I'd come back and do this? Did you think I'd leave Laura? Do you think I'd forgive you for leaving me? Did you even think that I don't even love you anymore?" I said each question becoming louder as I became more angry.
"I'm not done. What were you thinking because if you thought I'd leave them you're wrong. I love Laura and I would never do that to Collin, he's everything I ever wanted in a son. And did you ever think what would happen if Laura found this?" I asked almost yelling now.
"I don't Luke OK!" She yelled moving away from me. "I don't know why I did it! I was mad, I needed to tell you how I felt because I couldn't live with myself! I didn't mean for you to come back and do that! I don't know ok." She said whispering the last sentence.
"I hate you." I said and I saw the tears build up in her face.
"Please Luke don't say that." She said.
"I do. Why would you do this to me and my family?" I asked angry.
"You know what Luke just forget it and get out of my house." She said angrily grabbing that paper out of my hand.
"No." I said.
"Luke get the f*** out of my house right now. I'm not going to let you tell me how much you hate me in my own house. So either stop or get out." She said angrily walking towards the door and opening it.
"Fine I'll stop." I said and she closed the door and sat at the table and I sat in the chair across from her.
"Then what are you going to say." She said sassily.
"I don't know anymore. Ever since you came back I haven't really known what to do. I told myself I was over you but maybe I never did get over you when I finally let you go 10 years ago." I said confused.
"Luke I'm sorry if I confused you who you are, but I can tell you. You are Luke Hemmings, the man who is currently happily married to Laura Hemmings and you two have a beautiful son named Collin Hemmings, and me I'm just the friend who came back into your life after leaving it 20 years ago." She said plainly.
"But what if I don't believe that anymore?" I asked confused and she just gave me a sympathetic look.
"You have to Luke it's either believe it, or lose everything you have." She said and I nodded.
"Can you please not leave again?" I asked, she nodded and handed me a piece of paper.
"There's my number call whenever, and you know where I live so stop by every once in a while." She smiled and I nodded putting the paper in my pocket.
"I guess I should be going because Laura will start worrying." I said getting up. Kara got up and walked me to the front door.
"I love you Luke." She said pulling me into a hug.
"I love you too Kara." I said hugging her and soon walking out the front door.
As I got into the car I realized that people are right you never forget your first love and I know for as long as I live I'll never forget Kara, whether she's in my life or not.
