Luke and I had been "On the run" for about 2 weeks. And really it was fun and we found a hotel to stay at in town so we were good. But I was starting to miss the other guys and I was actually starting to miss my parents strangely enough. And it didn't help that I had like 40 missed text messages and like 30 missed phone calls. I wanted to call them and say everything was fine but I knew that if I did tell them and I'd give away where we are. But on a better note I'd been going to my therapy everyday since we left and I've been progressing really well and I'm just starting to be able to support my own body weight. But I guess it helps that I've been doing my exercises when I come back to the hotel room.
I was sitting on the bed just flipping through the channels and doing my stretches for my legs when I heard a knock on the door. I looked around and didn't see Luke then I remembered that he went out to get some groceries. I hobbled off the bed and into my wheelchair. I wheeled quietly over to the door and I stood up supporting myself on my wheelchair to look through the peep hole. I looked through and saw my parents? How in the world did they find me. I wheeled quietly into the bathroom and closed the door quietly behind me. I pulled out my phone and called Luke.
"Kara what's the problem?" He asked.
"How do you know it's a problem?" I asked in a whisper.
"Because I told you that the phones were only for emergencies so we don't lose our minutes. Can you hurry up with what you were saying." He said.
"Luke my parents are standing at the door." I whispered.
"Your parents?" He asked shocked.
"Yes my parents. I don't know how they found us and I don't know what to do." I said.
"Well maybe stay in the bathroom for a while and maybe they'll leave." He said.
"Ok and how do you know I'm in the bathroom?" I asked.
"You have a bathroom echo. Text me when they're gone." He said.
"Ok but can I just like text like Michael or someone just to let them know we're ok?" I said.
"Fine." He said.
"Ok. Love you I'll text you when my parents leave." I said.
"Ok bye." Luke said before hanging up. Once Luke hung up I turned my volume off and I decided to text Michael.
Hey Michael it's Kara. I just wanted to say that I'm fine and so is Luke so can you just tell everyone thanks -Kara
Once I sent the message I immediately got a response back.
Kara where the hell are you two? Everyone's super worried. -Michael
We're fine really can you just tell everyone. -Kara
Please tell me where you are. -Michael
If I tell you, you have to promise you can't tell anyone. -Kara
Michael took a minute to respond and I had time to realize I'd just basically said I'd tell him where we are. Maybe that's why Luke didn't want me to message them because he knew I'd tell them.
Ok so where are you guys? -Michael
We're at a hotel in town, but we're fine. -Kara
Ok well I'm coming over to talk to you in about an hour or so. -Michael
No you're not, you don't even know what hotel. -Kara
I'll find it there's not many hotels in town and all I have to do is ask if you guys are there. -Michael
Whatever but if Luke finds out he's gonna kill me. -Kara
Well I want Luke to be there so I can talk to both of you. -Michael
Can't you just come tomorrow? Today isn't a good day. -Kara
Ok I'll come tomorrow around 12. -Michael
That's perfect. See you then. -Kara
After I sent the message I clicked the power button and put it in my back pocket. I knew exactly what I was going to to do tomorrow. 12 is when Luke usually goes out for a walk. I'm fine with it because it gives me time to hang out and work on trying to walk again and Luke time to have me time. And while Luke is on his walk Michael will come here and I can talk to him. I'll just tell him that Luke had to go to something. Satisfied with my plan I started to tidy up the bathroom just to kill time. Once the bathroom was tidy I pulled my phone out of my pocket and clicked the power button to reveal the time of 9:00 PM. I realized that it had been about an hour and my parents should be gone by now.
I quietly opened the bathroom door and slowly wheeled over to the front door. I supported myself up and saw that my parents had left. I pulled my phone out and texted Luke saying my parents left. He responded soon saying he was on his way home.
I wheeled away from the door and I just stayed in my wheelchair. I looked around and saw the hotel room was a mess so I started to pick stuff up and tidy it up. And as soon as I put the last piece of dirty laundry in the dirty laundry bin Luke walked through the door. I turned my wheelchair around to face him.
"So how was shopping?" I asked.
"Good I guess it was shopping not really fun. But I do have a question." He said.
"And what would that question be?" I asked.
"Well you told me that your parents had left so I was wondering why they were still in the lobby of the hotel?" He asked angrily.
"I swear I thought they left. I looked through the peep hole and they weren't there." I said.
"Never mind." He said.
"Oh I told Michael that we were fine and that I'd be nice if he told everyone else." I said.
"Did he ask where we were?" He asked.
"Yes of course he di and I told him that we just wanted some space from everyone and we just want to keep our information private right now." I said.
"Are you telling me the truth about that?" He asked.
"I swear I'm telling you the truth." I said.
"Ok and I also think I'm gonna skip my walk thing tomorrow to hang out with you." He said setting the plastic bags on the counter and then lying down on the bed.
"No Luke you should go on your walk. I know how much you like it." I said.
"But in that time I could hang out with you and I love doing that." He said.
"I know you do but I know how good it is to clear your head sometimes." I said.
"What are you saying you don't want to hang out with me?" He asked.
"No I'm just saying it's nice to have time away from what's going on around you." I said.
"Fine I'll go on the walk seeing as my girlfriend doesn't even want to hang out with me. Maybe it is nice for me to go for that walk so I can get away from this." He said angrily and turning on his side so he wasn't facing me.
I opened my mouth to say something but nothing came out. I decided I was going to give him his space and I just turned off the TV and the lights and turned on the little night light. I tried my best to fall asleep on my wheelchair and even though it was comfortable it wasn't the comfortable.
I had finally fallen asleep when I felt some shake me awake. I opened my eyes and saw Luke standing above me. We both just stayed there staring at each other for a minute and we didn't really say anything but I guess words didn't really need to be said. Luke wheeled me over to my side of the bed and helped me onto the bed and then he came to lie down beside.
"Kara I'm sorry for getting mad at you-" Luke started but I cut him off.
"Luke it's fine." I said looking down at the sheets separating us from each other.
"No it's not fine. I shouldn't have gotten mad. I know you were just trying to help. I guess I'm just stressed." He said moving his hand towards mine and intertwining our fingers with each other.
"Ya." I said simply looking down at our hands.
"Can you say more than just one syllable words." He said.
"I'm just tired and I just wish that- never mind." I said.
"No you were going to say something." He said.
"It's nothing really I was just thinking out loud." I said.
"Please Kara just tell me." He said squeezing my hand.
"It's just that sometimes I find this whole running away thing difficult and I just sometimes want to go back home. But then I remember that I'd rather be here then home because anywhere you are already is home." I said getting quieter the closer I got to the end.
"Kara it's the same thing for me. This is really hard but being with you feels like home." He said pulling me into a hug.
"I love you, Luke." I said lifting my head up.
"I love you too, Kara." He said looking down at me and kissing my nose.
