We dropped Nathan outside of his apartments, dad didn't say a word. He seemed angry. I walked Nathan to the door and kissed his cheek to say bye. I ran back to dad's car and sat in the front seat. He stayed silent.
"Are you going to tell mum?" I asked.
"What? That you've been pulled out of school because of that boy again? What did we tell you Zoe? Did what we say not make sense? You are not to hang around with that boy anymore!" He ordered me.
"Dad I love him, he never did anything to hurt anyone! You can't jut tell me to stay away from someone I love, that's like you staying away from mum!"
"And what do you know about love? You are 16!" Dad asked me.
"I know that I care a lot for Nathan and I know that watching him get hurt today killed me! I was in so much pain knowing somebody would do that to a sweet boy like him! Why do you even want me to stay away dad? I thought you liked him..." I sighed. Dad started the car and ignored my question.
"I know what it's like for him," he told me.
"When I was a teenager there was this girl I really liked and her parents didn't like me either, probably because I had no manners as a kid-"
"Dad you have no idea! This isn't just about you guys not liking him, I'm his only friend and your telling me to leave him!"
"I'm sure he only told you that so you could go out with him!"
"No! Dad, he didn't! I hadn't a clue who he was until a few weeks ago yet he has been in my English since the start of the year! I watch him get picked on, he has no friends! He gets beaten up! He has a horrible life and I'm trying to help him because I'm hopelessly in love with him, whether you believe I am or not is your decision but you can't keep me from seeing him!" I demanded. Dad looked gob-smacked.
"we'll just tell your mum you were called in sick and needed to come home," he said after while.
"What?" I asked puzzled.
"Well she's going to be wondering why your home early isn't she? And I'm not going to tell her because it'll give her a heart attack," he laughed but I didn't.
"And for the Nathan situation?" I said. Dad looked at me for a second.
"Your mum won't ever agree to that-"
"But I'm willing to let you see him so long as your mother doesn't know," dad told me. "It seems like you need each other," I hugged him, not properly as he was driving. "I don't want my zo zo upset, you deserve this!"
"I love you dad," I muttered.
"I love you too sweetheart," he winked at me. I smiled.
