Chapter 5- Bear's Perspective
The man dropped Bear back onto the rough mattress and balled up his fist, "I was told to teach you a painful lesson if you attempted to escape. I don't like the idea of beating up a kid, but orders are orders."
The first punch hit Bear like a ton of bricks and he felt his nose crack and begin to pour blood down his face. Next went one of his ribs. After the third punch, everything went black.
Once again Mac was out of the car before it even stopped. He drew his gun and ran to the door and with one swift kick, knocked it in. Alex quickly parked the car and followed him, his gun also drawn, "Mac, you take the basement, I'll take the top floor." Mac nodded silently and quietly opened the door to the basement and turned off the safety on his gun. When he reached the bottom of the stairs he could see a familiar figure curled up on a dingy mattress. Dropping his guard he ran to Bear and shook him lightly, "Bear! Bear get up, we have to go. Bear!"
When his lover didn't respond, Mac used his free hand to roll him over and gasped when he saw the mass of bruises and clots of blood covering his face, chest and stomach, "Oh Bear...I'm so sorry..."
A noise behind him and he twirled and squeezed the trigger 3 times, instantly killing the big guard coming into the room. Gingerly lifting the fragile boy into his arms, Mac ran back up the stairs, yelling for Alex. His partner came out of a room down the hall and his eyes widened when he saw the mess the captors had made of Bear, "Oh man Mac. Hospital?" "Yes...hospital..."
The utter desolation in Mac's voice cut his partner to the core.
The drive to the hospital was long and quiet. Mac spent the ride with Bear in his lap, trying to wake the boy from his semi comatose state. Shaking, and talking to him didn't seem to do anything so Mac tried kissing him. No response.
Nurses at the hospital had to physically pull Bear out of Mac's arms and explain to him that he couldn't come into the room where they operated. So he waited in the lobby; fuming. Alex sat down in the corner and watched his best friend pace back and forth anxiously. When the nurse finally returned after nearly 3 hours, Mac's pacing stopped for a moment, "Is he okay?..."
"He's out of surgery and in recovery. They had to repair his shattered ribs so he is very sore. If you keep your hands to yourself you can go in. He's in room 203." The nurse pointed down the hallway towards the room.
Several nurses yelled at Mac to slow down as he ran down the hallway towards 203 but he didn't even hear them. Reaching the room, he pushed through the door and felt relief wash over him when he saw Bear sitting up in bed; alert. A smile broke out on his face when he saw Mac, "Mac.."
He held out his arms and the nurse's warning to keep his hands to himself was completely forgotten as Mac went to him and held him gently in his arms.
"Bear I'm so sorry! This is all my fault...I'm so so sorry..." The sobs wracked Mac's chest as he continued to apologize.
A small finger on his lips quieted him, only to replaced by soft lips against his. The kiss calmed him, as kisses from Bear always had. It ended way too soon and Mac found himself leaning back towards his lover but was stopped by a hand on his chest. "Mac, this is not your fault. You did your job. You made enemies. I'm alive, and you're here and that is all that matters to me. I love you." "But..."
He was shut up once again by lips against his and small hands tangled in his hair. "Don't talk..." His lover mumbled against his lips. Despite knowing that Bear was injured, Mac couldn't stop himself from biting at his lips and letting the kiss get a little more rough. A quiet whimper of pain from the injured boy jerked Mac out of his lust driven fevor, "I'm sorry little bear. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just missed you so much and I was so worried about you."
The smile he was given nearly stopped his heart, "It's okay my love. I wish we could do more...it's just, everything hurts right now...and that man...he...he..." Ignoring all hospital rules, Mac climbed into the bed and gently pulled Bear into his arms and rocked him back and forth, "I know love...I know...I'm so sorry...I know what happened in your past and this must have reopened those wounds. But I swear to you I'll get him. I'll make him pay for hurting you. He'll wish he had never been born."
Bear didn't doubt it.
He was safe again.
