“Roan,” I say as we walk over to our sofa, my hand clenched around the “vitamin”.
He blinks and slowly turns to look at us.
I open my hand and watch as he shifts from his slouch into a sitting position. He pinches it between his fingers and looks at the device closely.
“What is it?”
“It’s meant to be that vitamin we’re all meant to take.” Leo says through his teeth.
Roan continues to examine it quietly.
I tap my foot impatiently.
“I have an idea but I think we should go and talk to the Head.”
Leo groans at the prospect of moving.
I grab his hand and pull him along as I struggle to keep up with Roan’s long, meaningful strides.
Well he was back to normal ol’ moody Roan, but after seeing him so happy and cheerful with Rin, I wasn’t as happy to see this Roan as I’d thought I’d be.
Mrs. Oscar looks less than happy to see us three again as we come up to her desk.
“What do you want now?” She spits, eyeing Roan warily.
Roan drops the vitamin onto the desk.
“We want to know about this. Obviously it’s not a vitamin.”
She pales underneath the forced ignorant expression.
She presses the button.
“They’re here again.”
The Head chuckles humourlessly.
“I had a feeling they’d return. Let them in.”
“It’s about the vitamin.” Mrs. Oscar adds.
Then a click.
We turn to find the Head directly behind us.
She smiles wryly.
“So, how did you find out?” She holds out a pale, deceptively delicate looking hand which Roan drops the vitamin into.
“Rose dropped it and I accidentally stepped on it.” Leo explains and folds his arms stubbornly. “Now we want to know what exactly we’ve been swallowing the past few days.”
The Head’s lip twitches.
“Sorry, it’s just usually when something like this happens, we get someone like Roan to wipe your memories.” She shakes her head, blonde ponytail shimmering and sighs. “Follow me.”
She moves surprisingly fast considering how deep the plush carpet is and how spindly her heels look.
“Where are we going?” I whisper as we stride past her office doors.
Leo frowns, still exhausted.
I won’t get anything useful out of him.
But, turning to Roan, he looks just as wary and puzzled.
We stop outside what looks like a cupboard door.
Leo, Roan and I share a glance.
Was she going to lock us in there?
Was it was a weapons cupboard?
The Head waves a hand over a section on the magnolia walls and we watch as a screen blinks to life. She steps in front of us as she types in a password.
The cupboard door opens to reveal a whole room. On a huge screen directly in front of us, Suits play about with sections of it, tapping this, highlighting that and discussing.
Little dots cover the map of the school in one corner of the screen. The rest of it is a map of the nearby area where one particular dot slowly makes it way across the screen.
It all starts to make a horrible kind of sense.
Roan nods, his theory apparently proved.
“What the hell is this?!” Leo cries.
The Suits look up before giving each other a look.
The Head smiles, stretching her arms out to encompass the huge room.
“This is our tracking room. Right now, we are following the Mole.”
I look back at the lonely dot on the screen.
“So the vitamins?” Roan asks, but it’s not really a question. Just clarification.
The Head nods.
“The vitamins are tracking devices.”
