I wake up groggily as my alarm clock screams in my ear and nearly fall out of bed.
I get dressed in a daze, only just managing to remember to do up the zipper of my jeans before making my way to the canteen for breakfast.
The smell of hot pastry, porridge and coffee make me feel sick.
I’m so tired I can’t even begin to think about eating, I half-heartedly make my way to the front of the queue and grab an orange before turning to our spot in the back.
Three people smile encouragingly at me as I walk over.
I blink, halting suddenly.
I’d forgotten about Rin.
Inwardly groaning, I walk over, slowly noticing everyone else casting our new member curious glances
“Is she with the Mind Controller?”
“What’s she doing with the Outsiders?”
“She’s either brave, or stupid.”
I dredge up the best attempt at a smile I can and plonk down next to Leo.
With Rin next to Roan, and it not being a huge sofa, I am squished right between her and Leo.
I am suddenly very aware of how close I am to him.
I don’t meet his eyes.
“Morning, Rose.” Roan smiles.
I mumble incoherently and lie back, head resting against Leo’s arm. I stop myself from flinching away.
“Slept well then?” He smirks.
I think I’m going to throw up.
“Like an insomniac.” I smile, throwing a bit of orange peel in his direction, not really caring if I miss and hit Miss. Flirtygiggle.
“What do we have first?” Leo asks around a yawn which naturally sets me off.
Roan’s lip twitches. “PE.”
“Urrrrrr!” I groan loudly, Leo joining me.
“Why are they both tired?” Rin whispers. “Did they stay together?”
I glare at her.
“You don’t whisper very quietly do you?” I snap.
She seems to shrivel making me feel guilty but not as much as it should.
That good side of me is still sleeping.
Roan fights a grin.
“Really? The best we get out of you is a lip twitch for over three years and now she comes along, makes us feel awkward and you’re grinning?!”
“Rose,” Leo says under his breath.
I turn my attention back to Rin. “We are not together, we did not do anything last night and I don’t see why you even care when you seemed perfectly happy ignoring us-”
“Rose.” Leo says more firmly and my hands fly up to cover my mouth.
I try to pull them away, but Leo’s using his Quirk on me so settle for an angry glare.
“She gets a bit touchy if she doesn’t sleep long enough.” He smiles at Rin.
She nods, still looking at me like I’ll freaking bite her.
“Leh ma gu.” I growl through my hands.
“What?” He frowns, mischief in his eyes.
“I’m warmin wo.”
By now all three of them are freaking laughing, even Roan is chuckling.
“What?” Leo gasps between belly laughs.
I narrow my eyes, feeling the heat start to grow in my chest, expanding, fuelling off my anger and tiredness.
I start to panic.
I’m too tired, I can’t control it.
Soon, I’m practically choking on it, my hands become my own again and Leo frowns, worry clouding his eyes.
Rin jumps up and hides behind Roan.
“Ro- Ah!” Leo cries as he reaches out a hand to me before flinching. “Roan, she’s lost it.”
I gasp for breath, the ball is too big. I’ll knock someone flat with this.
“Rose,” Roan says calmly and I turn to him, hands clutching my chest and throat.
“Look at me.” I do as he says, well aware what he’s going to but beyond caring.
“You have complete control Rose, just…breathe it out, grab mine and Leo’s hand and let it all out steadily okay?”
I nod, numbly letting them each grab a hand as I slowly let it trickle out.
Leo hisses, gripping my hand tighter, Roan stays focused, eyes locked on mine, keeping me calm.
It seems to take an eternity but eventually, I can breathe.
“Ah Jesus Christ that freaking hurt!” Leo cries, cradling his hand like a bird with a broken wing.
“Sorry.” I’m even tireder now. Dead on my feet.
The last school fire was set off by an exhausted elemental.
Tiredness is treated very seriously here.
“Take her to bed Leo and don’t piss about any more She’ll have us all unconscious next time.” Roan snarls, rubbing his own hand.
Leo glares back but picks me up.
I fall asleep with my head on his chest.
