“You are my sunshine my only sunshine.” She sang into my ear. “You make me happy when skys are grey.”
I couldn't help but grin as the wind blew her hair in all kinds of directions.
“You’ll never know dear how much I love you please don’t take my sunshine away.” She finishes sweetly by giving me a gentle kiss on the lips.
I brush a strand of hair behind the ear. “I love you.” I admit.
She smiles. “I love you too Ryder.”
She rolls off my chest and into the grass, her light brown hair getting tangled. It was dark outside, yet I could see her smile and the little sun she had tattooed on her shoulder blade. She was beyond beautiful. I couldn’t help but getting lost in her ocean blue eyes. She finally gets up slowly and put her hand out to help me. When I raise my arm up she pulls hers away. I groan.
“You aren’t pulling that one again.” She giggles. I loved how she knew what I was going to do.
She walked away from me, I get up as fast as I could. “You are going to pay!” I chuckle, chasing after her.
She squeals and runs around in circles, as I chase her around the back yard. She eventually makes it to the front yard and runs into the road. I hear a motor roar and tires screech, She turns back to look at me and the rest is a blur.
“Lily!” I yell but it was too late, the red truck had stopped and she was laying there, motionless on the black pavement.
“I am so sorry!” He doesn’t bother shutting his door as he jumps out of the drivers side of the truck.
I just stand here, unable to move. I am just staring at her lifeless looking body. “Lily.” I say quietly, as if I knew was was just going to get up and dust off her dress.
“I have nine one one on the line now man!” I heard the man choke on his words which meant he was now crying but all I could do was stare at Lily. Lily my beautiful baby girl.
I walked over to her, taking off my leather jacket she loved so much and wrapped her in it. She looked so exposed in her sun dress and I didn’t like it. I laid her in my lap, I could feel a warm liquid coming through my shirt. Blood. Just then I feel tears sliding down my face. I hear sirens but it felt like hours that I was just sitting here, holding here. Why weren’t they coming to help her? I refused to stop looking at her, petting her hair and rocking back and forth.
“Sir, you are going to have to let go.” one of the men said, but i didn’t. “Sir!” He is now yelling.
I didn’t move, I just let them remove her from my lap. I hear screaming, but I didn’t pay attention to who it was. Everything was just background noise. I watch them as they wheel her up onto the ambulance and I hop in the back.
as they try to get the bleeding to stop, I lay my head in the crook of her neck and sing.
“You are my sunshine.” I choke out. “My only sunshine. You make me happy.” I sniffle. “When skies are grey. You’ll never know dear how much I love you. please don’t” I am crying harder now and someone rubs my back but I don’t care. I can’t finish it. “Take. my. sunshine. away.” I kiss her face so many times. “Please don’t take her away.”
