1. Rise Above This

GHOST VO:

Journal entry a hundred and seventy eight. We almost lost everything today. It turns out Chet and Bryan were planning on turning on us the whole time. Both of them are gone, presumed dead. We found other or rather they found us. They saved us. We’re remaining in my house at the moment until we figure out what to do. I don’t know what’s going to happen now. All I do know is that it feels good to finally meet some people who are willing to listen to reason.

INT – GHOSTS LIVING ROOM

IRVING:

And you four have just been cooped up inside of this tiny house all this time?

GHOST:

Yes.

WALLACE:

How’d you survive?

DEREK:

Clever instinct.

DESIREE:

Yeah but look out the window! You’re right smack dab in the middle of a town. There’s roamers everywhere. Aren’t you worried that you’ll be overrun?

HUE:

We’ve been pretty lucky thus far.

LUKE:

It didn’t look that way when we showed up.

DEREK:

We’ve never seen a herd that size roam through here like that before.

IRVING:

Well we have.

KENNETH:

Once they sniff you out, these walls won’t hold you for long.

GHOST:

My father built this house with his bare hands. I’m not giving up on it-

DEREK:

Ghost, don’t argue with our rescuers. These people have seen the world longer than we have. They know what they’re talking about.

FREEMAN:

Where exactly are you all heading?

YOLANDA:

Out of state to my boyfriend’s lab. He has a station that we think could hold a key as to what’s been happening.

HUE:

You’re all going?

IRVING:

Mhm.

WALLACE:

Leaving a trail of dead bodies behind us all the way there.

DEREK:

Do you think we can come along?

IRVING:

I’ll have to see-

DESIREE:

Irving, let them join the group. They’re good people.

KENNETH:

I trust them. Besides, anyone who can drive a lawnmower in the zombie apocalypse with one arm is a hero in my book.

IRVING:

Fine. But if you’re in our group, as a safety precaution…you’ll have to give us your guns.

WALLACE:

Not for these folks, Irving. I trust them.

IRVING:

You what?

WALLACE:

I trust them. They deserve to hold onto their weapons.

KENNETH:

Then wait! When can I get a gun?

YOLANDA:

Me too?

IRVING:

In due time.

LUKE:

You really trust these people, Wallace? We don’t want another Mary incident on our hands.

 WALLACE:

I think these guys are just fine.

HUE:

Gee, thanks. Can I see that sniper you’re holding?

WALLACE:

Betsy? You’re crazy. Go snag your own sniper.

GHOST:

Okay, so Irving? What’s the plan?

IRVING:

According to Yolanda’s directions, we keep heading west. That should take us to-

YOLANDA:

Rockville.

DEREK:

We’re going to Rockville?

YOLANDA:

Just passing through. It shouldn’t be a big visit.

KENNETH:

I was about to say, that’s a pretty big city.

LUKE:

We’ll have to tread lightly.

IRVING:

Alright. Let’s pack up and get ready to move out within the next fifteen minutes.

(The gang splits)

INT – FREEMANS ROOM

(FREEMAN is trying to tie his shoe)

YOLANDA:

Need help with that?

FREEMAN:

I got it.

YOLANDA:

You look like you might need some help.

FREEMAN:

I can tie this thing all on my own, thanks.

YOLANDA:

Okay then.

(Pause)

YOLANDA:

Let me help you.

(YOLANDA helps FREEMAN)

YOLANDA:

I would have suspected an amputee knowing how to tie his shoes better.

FREEMAN:

I haven’t been an amputee very long.

YOLANDA:

Oh, I’m sorry. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you lose it?

FREEMAN:

I’d rather not talk about it.

YOLANDA:

Too painful to talk about?

FREEMAN:

Yeah.

YOLANDA:

I understand that. We all hide a lot of pain that is too terrible to talk about.

FREEMAN:

You ain’t just whistling Dixie.

(Another pause)

YOLANDA:

Who’s Jeremy?

FREEMAN:

Excuse me?

YOLANDA:

I heard you whispering to yourself earlier. You were whispering about someone named Jeremy.

FREEMAN:

He’s my son. Or…was my son.

YOLANDA:

I’m so sorry…again.

FREEMAN:

Life hasn’t been very gracious to me recently.

YOLANDA:

Trust me. It hasn’t been that gracious for me either.

(YOLANDA sits next to FREEMAN)

YOLANDA:

Have you ever felt as though you had this weight on your shoulders that you just wanted to get rid of?

FREEMAN:

All the time.

YOLANDA:

I’m afraid I have that feeling.

FREEMAN:

Now why would a woman as pretty as you have that sort of feeling?

YOLANDA:

…Just…because.

FREEMAN:

There’s always something deeper beneath the surface.

YOLANDA:

I’m sure there is.

(Another pause)

FREEMAN:

Well, I think we should be going-

YOLANDA:

Kiss me Freeman.

FREEMAN:

I’m sorry?

YOLANDA:

Kiss me.

FREEMAN:

But Yolanda…you’re in a relationship.

YOLANDA:

Honestly? I don’t even know if he’s alive.

FREEMAN:

So you’re leading us to a lab which could be a dead end?

YOLANDA:

It’s better than nothing. We all need a little hope. I gave us that hope. Now please, kiss me.

FREEMAN:

I haven’t kissed anyone since my wife left me.

YOLANDA:

It’s time to move on, mister.

(YOLANDA gets on top of FREEMAN)

FREEMAN:

I don’t think we should do this.

YOLANDA:

Why?

FREEMAN:

Jeremy’s watching…

YOLANDA:

Let him watch.

(The two start to make out)

YOLANDA:

What? What is it?

FREEMAN:

He’s not there anymore.

YOLANDA:

Because I’m here now. Now take me in your arm.

(The two fall back on the bed)

INT – GHOSTS ROOM

DESIREE:

And these are all of his books?

DEREK:

Yeah.

DESIREE:

I bet if we combined them, we might have the next great American novel.

DEREK:

Don’t encourage him.

DESIREE:

I’m sorry to hear about what happened to your girlfriend. Nobody should ever go through that kind of torture.

DEREK:

Thanks, Desiree. But I’ve learned to rise above it all.

DESIREE:

Call me Dez. All my friends do.

DEREK:

Sure thing.

(The two continue packing. In walks LUKE)

LUKE:

Hey Derek, Hue needs your help in the kitchen.

DEREK:

Right. I’ll see you all in the living room in three minutes.

(DEREK exits)

LUKE:

Dez, how you feeling?

DESIREE:

Pretty good. In fact, I should be the one asking you that question. How’s the wound?

LUKE:

Healing well. I just wanted to say something to you that’s been on my mind ever since the ambulance ride from Green Ridge.

DESIREE:

Yeah?

LUKE:

When you tried to save my life by attacking that guy…you scared me.

DESIREE:

Scared you? How did I scare you?

LUKE:

You just tackled that guy like it was nothing and wrestled with him on the ground. You could have been seriously hurt or even killed! I didn’t want to see one of my best friends die.

DESIREE:

Luke, I was going to be fine. Wallace had the guy in his sights the whole time.

LUKE:

I’m just saying-

DESIREE:

What are you saying, Luke? You sound really nervous.

LUKE:

I like you, Dez. Like a lot.

(Pause)

LUKE:

And I’ve been hiding my true feelings for you for the longest time.

DESIREE:

You…like me?

LUKE:

I do. Ever since Lakeside. The night I heard you and Clayton in the tent, it made me jealous. But when he died-

DESIREE:

You thought it could be your shot to get with me?

LUKE:

No! Not at all! It was a tragedy loosing such a good leader and everything but-

DESIREE:

I’m sorry Luke but I just don’t feel the same way about you.

LUKE:

What?

DESIREE:

You’re a great friend and all but I just don’t have the same feelings you have for me.

LUKE:

I…I understand.

DESIREE:

But thank you for being honest.

LUKE:

Not a problem.

DESIREE:

We better hurry. Irving said he wanted us back in the living room in fifteen minutes. That was fifteen minutes ago.

LUKE:

Yeah.

INT – LIVING ROOM

IRVING:

It looks like everyone is prepared.

WALLACE:

Everyone search the entire building?

GHOST:

Yep. I checked the attic while Kenneth swept the basement.

IRVING:

Good. I guess it’s time for us to head out.

GHOST:

Goodbye house. You housed me well my entire life.

DEREK:

It’s okay Ghost.

(Pause)

WALLACE:

Enough of this weepy bullshit. Let’s burn some rubber and chug some gasoline!

(The gang disperses)

 INT – OLC’S OFFICE

(WES enters)

WES:

Sir?

OLC:

Goddammit, what is it? Can’t you see that I’m fucking busy?

WES:

I just got word about Peter.

OLC:

Peter!? Has he returned with those motherfuckers?

WES:

Um, unfortunately no. You see there is good news and bad news.

OLC:

Don’t sugar coat this, Wes.

WES:

Right. You see Sir, our men found his body up at Green Ridge. It looked as though he was taken out in a scuffle-

OLC:

Son of a bitch!

WES:

But on the bright side, it did look like he put up one hell of a fight.

OLC:

Who was responsible for sending Peter out and finding those fuckers?

WES:

Andrews, Sir.

OLC:

Send Andrews in.

WES:

Yes, Sir.

(WES exits. OLC whistles to himself when ANDREWS enters)

OLC:

Ah, Andrews! How the fuck are yah!? Jaunty are we? As you can tell…I’m not exactly the happiest camper at the moment. I want you to stand right there and look at me as I slit your throat. I’m serious about that.

(OLC walks over to ANDREWS)

OLC:

I told you I wanted those two fuckers back here with their entire camp so I can string them up by their toes and dice them up. Why did you send Peter out alone? WHY!?

(ANDREWS is so scared, he doesn’t talk)

OLC:

What? You can’t find the words? Are they stuck in your throat? Here, let me help you get them out.

(OLC takes out a knife and slits his henchman’s throat)

OLC:

There! Now you should have no trouble with finding the words to say because they should be pouring out of your throat…along with everything else! Dammit. Wes get in here and clean up this mess!

EXT – NEIGHBORHOOD

(The group packs up the ambulance)

DEREK:

Can we all fit?

IRVING:

We should. Did you refill the gas tank, Ken?

KENNETH:

Just did. I gotta warn you though, we’re all out of gas from the last few cars we siphoned.

IRVING:

We’ll just have to look out for a few gas stations.

WALLACE:

Alright, then. Let’s head out!

(Everyone gets into the vehicle. YOLANDA helps FREEMAN in)

YOLANDA:

After you.

FREEMAN:

Why thank you.

DESIREE:

Hey Luke. Are you going to be okay?

LUKE:

What? Oh…yeah. Everything is going to be fine.

DEREK:

Let me help you with your bags, Dez.

DESIREE:

It’s okay Derek. I got them.

(Everyone piles in and IRVING starts up the engine)

WALLACE:

Dead heads at five o’ clock.

(Zombies start to shuffle out into the street)

IRVING:

Say goodbye folks, because you’re never seeing that house again.

(The ambulance starts to drive away)

EXT – WOODS

(Zombies moan. They hear something. Suddenly-BOOM! They go down)

CHET:

Damn. That was my last bullet.

(More moans are heard)

CHET:

Fuck!

(CHET backs up and falls over as he see’s nothing but rotting corpses stumble towards him)

CHET:

I guess this is the end. If I’m going out, then I’m going out my way. Come on you fuckers!

(Three gunshots go off. The zombies fall down)

CHET:

Wh…what the hell?

(Out from the trees comes a couple of men with pistols. Behind them is a familiar voice)

OLC:

Guns down! Guns down! That’s a live one!

Chet:

No fucking way.

(OLC appears and looks at CHET)

OLC:

Now look at who we have here. Well. Which should I do first? Bite you, blow you, or fuck you? Hee, hee. Wes! Bring me some rope. We have a new friend to bring back with us.

(We fade out to “Rise above This” by Seether)
