Equal Ice

I’m a performer, but I don’t act on a regular stage. I dress up in costumes, but I don’t play a character. My stage isn’t one in a theater; it’s clean slick ice at a rink. I don’t play a character, I’m just myself. Sometimes on the ice though, I feel like I’m someone else. Someone who is graceful and beautiful, it’s still me though, just a different side of me. A side that I like much more than my everyday self. Ice skating is much more work than people may think though, and some people don’t consider it a sport. It’s not as extreme as hockey for example. I may not look very tough, but I can accelerate faster than the guys on the racetrack. I take harder impacts than a rider being thrown from a bull. And I handle more G-Force than a fighter pilot. So why just be extreme, when you can be extremely graceful.

Chapter 72

Harry’s POV

When I had woken up this morning, I had been in a decently good mood until I realized what I had to do today, but I knew that I really had to do it. The date itself wasn’t what I was really dreading today though.

Although I wasn’t looking forward to it, the part that I was really dreading today was the fact that I had to act like I jerk during the dinner. I knew that it was my idea to do this, and it sounded like a really good idea at the time, and it seemed to help Gabrielle with the stress she was feeling, but the closer it got time to having to pick Bella up, the more real it felt and the more nervous I was.

Usually most guys were nervous to pick a girl up for a date because; well it can just be nerve racking. However I was nervous for a completely different reason, I was nervous because I had to completely ruin the night. As it got nearer to the time I needed to start getting ready, and I had to keep telling myself not to back out of this, Gabrielle would be pissed if I didn’t go through with the plan.

As I was getting ready for tonight, I began thinking of all the ways that I could act like a jerk tonight and get her to be annoyed with me and not like me anymore. I texted her the time I was going to go pick her up, but I wasn’t going to show up on time. I didn’t tell her where I was taking her because I knew she was going to get dressed up and I was just going to take her to a simple diner, so I didn’t want her to know that yet. I went ahead and just put on a t-shirt, jeans, and converse.

When I showed up in pretty casual clothes, she was either going to think I was going to take her to a simple place, or she would think that we were going to a nice place and she was going to be embarrassed that I wasn’t dressed up.

I had contemplated on whether or not to take her to a nice place or not, but I had decided just to take her to the diner because I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on her food. Then again I was probably just going to have her pay for her own meal, so at least I was being a bit nice and wasn’t going to take her to an expensive place for her to pay for her own meal.

After I was completely ready I waited for a while and checked the time and saw that I was already almost ten minutes late. I didn’t want to be too late, and by the time I got to her house I would probably be at least twenty minutes late, so I decided that was plenty of minutes to be late.

When my aunt asked me where I was headed out to, I just told her that I was going to hang out with some of the hockey guys. I knew if I said Gabrielle she was probably going to tell me to just have her come over here, plus yesterday I had already told her that Gabrielle and I weren’t going to be able to hang out today.

I figured telling her that I was hanging out with some of the hockey guys was safe because since it didn’t involve coach, he couldn’t blab to my aunt about if I had lived up to what I told her. I obviously felt bad about not telling my aunt the truth, but there were some things that she really didn’t need to know, and I was acting a bit out of my comfort zone today so I had to just deal with it.

Once I was in my car, I typed in the address that Bella had texted me earlier into by GPS and started driving there once it showed me the directions.

I eventually arrived at her house, and parked on the side of the road since two cars already took up the driveway. I got out of my car and walked up to her front door, and only moments after I rang the doorbell it was opened up by Bella and the smell of her perfume instantly filled my scenes and I cringed a bit, it smelt like she had poured the entire bottle on herself. Her outfit was defiantly dressier than mine, so, so far so good.

When she went to get her purse, I noticed Gabrielle standing back in front of the living room, but close up enough that I could see her. I noticed she was staring at me so I looked over at her and sent her a quick smile, but let it fade once Bella came back. Before we left, Bella had asked Gabrielle if her dad was coming to pick her up or something, I wasn’t really listening.

“Okay I’m ready,” Bella soon said and quickly grabbed my hand, catching me off guard a bit.

As we left her house and started to walk to my car, I let her hold my hand for right now, but if she grabbed it again later, I was going to pull away.

“So where are you taking me?” Bella asked as I began to drive out of the neighborhood.

“You’ll see,” I told her and she for some reason giggled, but I just ignored it.

As I was driving she was doing exactly what I knew she was going to do tonight which was talk. A little over halfway to the diner since I had had enough of her talking, I decided to go ahead and start my plan now and put an end to her talking.

“Hey, hey,” I said, interrupting whatever she was rambling on about.

“What?” she asked.

“Stop talking,” I told her, and from the corner of my eye I saw a confused look take over her face.

“Huh? Why?”

“Because it’s annoying me right now,” I told her, and I saw her jaw drop as I reached over to turn the radio volume up.

All she did was cross her arms and rest her back against the back of the chair.

I had to say that I was pretty proud of myself for doing that, and she really just seemed shocked, like no one has ever talk to her like that before, and I was pretty sure no one has. I started to like this idea of being a jerk to her a bit more now since I would be able to show this pampered princess that not everyone is going to treat her the spoiled way she expected to be treated. I was thankful when I finally saw the diner because I was sick of her pouting and I wanted to get out of the car.

“The diner?” I heard Bella question as I drove up into the parking lot.

“Yes, problem?” I turned to face her once I had found a place to park, at the back of the lot.

“No, no problem at all,” she said and smiled and I could tell it was all forced.

As we began to walk up to the entrance of the diner, I glanced down and saw her hand about to grab mine so I quickly shoved both hands in my pockets and continued to walk.

When we walked inside, just by looking at the expression on her face as she looked around, I could tell she felt completely over dressed, and not happy with how this date was going so far. A waitress soon came up to us and led us to a booth that was next to a window.

Once we sat down the waitress placed menus in front of us and told us that she’d be back to take out drink orders.

As we were both looking at our menus, I felt that Bella was a bit nervous to say anything right now, and I was currently not enjoying the awkward silence.

“Well,” I blurted out, causing her to look up.

“What?” she asked.

“Are you going to talk or just sit there? I’m getting bored,” I told her.

“Well I, I just thought that you didn’t want me to talk right now,” she said a bit nervously.

“You thought wrong then, I was just sick of you rambling in the car,” I snapped.

“O-Okay,” she said and began to ask me what I was thinking about ordering.

I toned down the jerkiness a bit right now since she was actually willing to have a conversation and not just be constantly talking, but I would bring the jerk in me back soon.

When the waitress came back, Bella and I both ordered water, and then we went back to deciding on what to get to eat once the waitress left.

“I think I’m going to get the cheeseburger,” Bella told me.

“Oh, bad idea,” I said to her.

“Why? Is it not good?” she asked me.

“I don’t know, but I think you should stick with a salad. You’re a figure skater and you got to keep those pounds down and right now I think you’re right on the edge, so better stick with a salad,” I told her, going back to being a jerk.

I knew that was a pretty mean thing to say, especially to a girl, but Bella had a ton of confidence in herself, which was the one quality she had that I actually liked, and I knew she wasn’t going to let the opinion of one guy get to her, especially since I was acting like an ass tonight.

“Well then,” she said,

“I guess I’ll just get a salad,” she slapped her menu shut and set it down on the table in front of her.

•••

Bella and I were almost done with our meals now, and we were thinking about ordering some desert.

“How about the cheesecake?” Bella suggested as she looked at the desert menu.

“Sure, whatever, are you done with that?” I asked, pointing at her water.

“Um-”

“Great,” I said before she could even give me an answer and I reached across and poured the reminder of her water into my up.

“You know what I’m not really in the mood for desert anymore, let’s just get the check,” Bella said.

“Okay,” I answered and signaled for the waitress to come back over here.

“We’d like our check,” I told her.

“Okay, is the check together?” she asked me, assuming that I was paying for all of it.

“No, separate,” I said, and she nodded and walked off to go get our checks.

Bella didn’t object to this at all, she just got out her wallet and waited for the check. Considering how this night was going, I was pretty sure she was already expecting to have to pay for the check because she didn’t seem very surprised that I was having her pay for her own meal.

When the waitress came back with the checks, we gave her our cards and she came back a few minutes later and gave us our cards back.

“Thanks,” I said to the waitress and winked at her.

She just smiled, and then walked away from our table. “Let’s go,” Bella said, and got up from the booth, and then the two of us walked back outside to the car and I knew that both if us were thankful that the night was almost over.
