Equal Ice

I’m a performer, but I don’t act on a regular stage. I dress up in costumes, but I don’t play a character. My stage isn’t one in a theater; it’s clean slick ice at a rink. I don’t play a character, I’m just myself. Sometimes on the ice though, I feel like I’m someone else. Someone who is graceful and beautiful, it’s still me though, just a different side of me. A side that I like much more than my everyday self. Ice skating is much more work than people may think though, and some people don’t consider it a sport. It’s not as extreme as hockey for example. I may not look very tough, but I can accelerate faster than the guys on the racetrack. I take harder impacts than a rider being thrown from a bull. And I handle more G-Force than a fighter pilot. So why just be extreme, when you can be extremely graceful.

Chapter 65

Gabrielle’s POV

Harry had insisted that we stay a bit longer and help his aunt clean up the kitchen a bit. He had completely ignored his aunt’s pleas to just let her do it herself so he could get me home. I had finally went ahead and gave in and helped Harry because I knew he wasn’t going to listen to his aunt. I did have a little extra time and it was just going to take longer if Harry was just doing it by himself.

Harry’s aunt finally got him out of the kitchen and stopped him from cleaning up when she convinced him that he and I both would end up meeting each other’s family members tonight if we didn’t hurry up and leave to get back to my house before my dad got there. I said bye to his aunt and Ben, since he had come out of us room to wait for his mom to tuck him into bed.

“So that went pretty well, huh?” Harry said as we walked out of his aunt’s house and to the driveway where his car was.

“Yeah, surprisingly it did,” I agreed.

“I didn’t think it would turn out like that, but I guess it was because I just kept imaging the worst case scenario to happen. She was pretty calm and cool about it though, I mean at first she was pretty shocked and a bit mad, but she came around,” Harry said, and I just nodded, not really sure what to say now. Harry an I both got into his car once he unlocked it, and then he back out of the driveway and headed out of his aunt’s neighborhood and began to drive to mine. The first couple minutes of the car ride were pretty silent, as they usually were, but I soon heard Harry clear his throat like he usually did before he was about to speak.

“So,” he began, and I was right that he now had something to say.

“I was thinking about tonight, and when my aunt had spoke with me in the living room for a bit when we first got to the house,”

“What about it? What did she say anyway?” I asked, and when he looked over at me for a second, I realized that I had interrupted.

“Sorry, go on,”

“So when I was talking with her, she basically told me that she wasn’t mad about our relationship, she was just upset that I hadn’t told her about it. So now I’ve been feeling pretty bad that I hadn’t told her, even though I knew it was best that I didn’t until now, she was still so supportive of me. Even though she was almost to the point of pressuring me for information, she just wanted to be apart of my life because before all she had was Ben because all her family live back in England,” he told me.

I did feel some sympathy for him, because I felt bad about keeping this from her too, but it was best that we hadn’t told her until we pretty much had to. We didn’t know that she was going to react the way she did, if we did know I would’ve been okay with telling her a long time ago.

So I wanted to tell him that he really shouldn’t feel that bad about it because he’s only feeling bad about not telling her right now because he now knows that she is okay with it all. I knew that I shouldn’t say that though and that I should just keep my mouth shut about it right now because I knew it was going to cause an argument if I did.

“Is that all you wanted to say, or is there more?” I asked him because I just remembered that I needed to tell him about what Bella had said to me earlier, but I didn’t want to start a new conversation if he wasn’t done with the one he had already started. Well technically it wasn’t really a conversation, it was just him talking, but still. “Well what I wanted to say was, that I think we should tell your dad about us,”

“You think what?” I said, probably a bit to loud since I noticed him jump in his seat a bit.

“I know you heard what I said,” he told me.

“You want to tell my dad? Are you crazy?”

I knew I probably should be reacting differently right now, but I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t understand why on earth he would want to tell my dad. I get that he is feeling bad about not telling his aunt, but he weren’t really sure how she was going to react, and she made Harry invite me for dinner.

We pretty much know how my dad is going to react, and I wasn’t planning on telling him by choice, I was going to wait as long as I could or until I really had to.

“I think it’s probably the right thing to do right now,” Harry said.

“I think you have a death wish. Harry you know we can’t tell him, at least not this soon,” I told him.

“Look, I think you should just trust me. I know you don’t like keeping this from him, and you’ll feel better once he knows,” he said.

“Listen, Harry, I don’t think you understand. My dad is not going to be as understanding as your aunt. He may not know you but he basically already hates you just because you are a hockey player at the rink,” I tried to explain to him and get this information that was once clear to him, back into his head.

“And he’s not just going to get mad at me he’s going to come after you too,” I added.

“Don’t you think you’re thinking this all out of proportion? He may be pretty pissed off at first, but it’s his daughters relationship, don’t you think he’ll come around sooner or later?” Harry said.

“You don’t get it Harry. His wife, the woman he was in love with, left him. He won’t give a crap about a relationship. If anything that would make him even more furious and once again I say the fact that you’re a hockey player is just going to be another thing that would make it worse,” I told him, hoping that maybe I’d finally gotten my point across to him and gotten some sense slapped back into him.

All he did though was let out a big sigh, “At least consider it, that’s all I ask,”

“Fine,” I said, even though I didn’t really mean it and I’m pretty sure he knew that but he wasn’t going to comment any further.

I wished he would just understand that my dad is my family and I could handle this anyway that I wanted to, just not his way. I knew now was probably the worst possible time for me to bring up what Bella was planning on asking him the next time they go to the park, but I think she said they were going to the park sometime tomorrow so it was really now or never to warn him about it.

“Hey, Harry,” I said, getting his attention again.

“Yeah?” he said as he moved the steering wheel to make a turn, and I could already tell by the sound of his voice that he was still pretty annoyed with me for not wanting to tell my dad about us.

“You’re taking Ben to the park tomorrow, right?” I asked him.

“Yeah, pretty sure, why?”

“Well I know that this probably isn’t the time to tell you this, but Bella is planning on asking you out tomorrow,” I told him.

Harry’s foot slammed down on the break causing me to jerk forward in my seat. I wasn’t really expecting him to do that in reaction to what I just told him, but then I realized that he had stopped at a red light that he almost didn’t see.

“Sorry,” he told me, “So why does she want to ask me out?”

“Probably because she likes you,” I said a bit sarcastically.

“Since when though? She basically hates me, but her hate lessened when I got her to talk to me for a bit,” he told me.

“Well you got her hate for you to lessen a lot because she likes you now,” I told him.

“Are you sure she is really going to ask me out?” Harry asked me.

“Positive,”

“Maybe you misheard her or something,” Harry said.

“We got in a big argument over it and I have no clue when we are even going to speak to each other again, so yes, I am pretty sure she is going to ask you out,” I retaliated.

“So I have two figure skaters fighting over me huh?” he smirked.

“Don’t flatter yourself, she has a crush on almost every guy she has a conversation with,” I said to him.

“I thought she really despised hockey players, but I guess all I needed to do was talk to her and she now likes me more than I want,”

“Her excuse for liking a hockey player is that you had nothing to do with the feud. She used to have a huge crush on Zack before he turned into a jerk,” I told him, and he laughed slightly.

“So what should I say when she asks me? I don’t want to say yes to her,” Harry said.

“I don’t want you to say yes either, but I’m worried she might get a bit suspicious since she still isn’t completely convinced about me telling her that I wasn’t with you at the pizza place,” I explained and he just nodded, he probably had forgotten about that until I brought it up again.

We stayed silent for a bit as I gave him some time to think before speaking again.

“So what are you going to say to her?” I hesitantly asked him, and I realized that he was now driving into my neighborhood.

“I honestly don’t know,” he said as he made the few turns until he was driving up to my house.

“I’ll try to call you tomorrow before I go to the park,” Harry told me as he drove up and parked across the street from my house.

I was happy that he parked close to my house because since my dad wasn’t home yet, I didn’t want him to be driving home as I was walking on the sidewalk to the house, because I knew he was going to be home soon. Harry and I both said bye and he placed a quick kiss to my lips before I got out of the car.

Once I was inside my house, I quickly headed upstairs to get changed since I knew my dad was going to ask questions if I just stayed in what I was wearing.

After I got changed, I wiped all the makeup off my face, since I was wearing more than usual that was another thing my dad might comment on. I grabbed a hairband and tied my hair up into a bun to mask my curled hair as much as I could as I walked back downstairs just as I heard my dad opening up the front door.
