So far the dinner and the night over all was going pretty well. I still have awhile until I have to leave and Harry’s aunt still hasn’t brought up anything about this relationship, Harry had told me she was going to wait until the end of dinner so she probably meant during dessert or something. Harry’s aunt and I were mostly just talking about the rink and catching up a bit, probably not what she was expecting to have conversation about with the girl Harry was bringing for dinner since she was thinking she didn’t know me, that was until she actually saw me, but it was still going well.
Harry and Ben were mostly pretty silent while Tammy and I talked, I could tell that Harry was listening, just probably not sure what all to say. Ben however, I could tell that he was pretty bored with this over all since he was the only kid here and couldn’t really join into the conversation, so he just occupied himself with his food basically just picking with his fork at the vegetables that his mom made him put on his plate.
After awhile longer, we all decided that we were done with our meals, and Harry’s aunt took up all our plates and Harry and I helped her bring all the other dishes that contained leftover food into the kitchen where I figured she would empty out later and safe the extra food.
Once we did that she told us to go sit back down in the living room while she handled bringing out the dessert, despite Harry’s many attempts to try and help her. I knew he was trying to help out and be nice as much as he could right now because he knew the conversation that was to come in just a few short minutes.
I wondered if she was going to do it while we ate our dessert, or just have us finish fast and wait until we were done when Ben would probably be sent to his room to get ready for bed and everything. I guess it wouldn’t really matter if Ben was in the dining room or not for when she talked to us because it wasn’t like he was really going to chime in with something say, I just thought it’d be better just the three of us, or just not talk about the topic at all, but I knew that wasn’t going to happen.
Tammy soon came back into the dining room carrying in some small plates and then a round dish, which once she set it down, seemed to contain a homemade cheesecake. I once again felt bad that this dinner wasn’t all she expected as I see again how hard she worked on this whole set up because homemade cheesecake usually takes awhile to make.
She set the small plates in front of each of us and then handed Harry a knife, letting him cut into the cake first. Harry cut out a slice and then grabbed my plate to put it on, I silently thanked him as he cut more pieces to put on the other plates, giving himself a piece last.
As we ate our dessert, I was a bit relieved that Tammy had just gone back to the small conversations we were having earlier except this time bringing Harry into them more this time.
“Ben?” Harry’s aunt said to her son once we were all pretty much done eating.
“Yeah?” he answered, turning to look up at her.
“Do you want to go ahead and head to your room to get ready for bed? To let me talk with these to for a bit,” Harry and I both looked over at each other once she said that, both of us knowing what that meant and we’ve basically both been expecting it for quite some time now.
Since I really didn’t know her full reaction and thoughts to this situation, I really wasn’t sure how this was going to go, Harry however had a better idea of it than I did right now.
“Can’t I stay up for a bit longer?” he pleaded.
“The longer you stay up the longer you have to stay in that shirt,” she said in a reminding tone, and I looked over at Harry wondering if he could explain further on what that meant.
“He hates the shirt,” Harry whispered to me, seeing that I didn’t get what she meant, “Thinks its uncomfortable,”
I nodded and watched as Ben finally agreed and got off his seat at the table and walked out of the dining room to head to his room now.
Once the door shut, Tammy looked around her before speaking, “So,” she began, “I guess you both understand that we have some discussing to do,” she stated, and Harry and I both nodded.
“Now what you two what to do with your life, your relationship, I don’t mind, that’s up to you. I just want you both to realize how much conflict this could cause in a small town like this with an abnormal feud,” she began to explain to us.
Harry and I just both continued to nod, neither of us having anything to say at the moment, so we just let her go on and continue with what she needed to say.
“As you well know, people around here in the skating business at the rink take this whole feud pretty seriously. Lucky for you I think that whole thing is pretty stupid, then again I don’t even know exactly what happened,”
“So…what are you saying?” Harry asked her.
“Basically that I give you my blessing,” she joked, but meant it seriously,
“Also I’d rather not be dragged into the mess this might cause if this gets out at the rink,” she added.
Harry and I both nodded understandingly, seeming it’s the only things we’ve really been doing right now is nodding as we listened to her. I think we both were expecting something different from how this all actually went. I’m not really sure what we were expecting, but how calm and understanding she was, was definitely not it.
“Okay, well I guess you should get Gabrielle home now, wouldn’t want her dad getting home first,” she said with a smirk.
“What?” I said, looking at her and then at Harry with a confused look.
I thought that Harry had told her that I needed to get back home to finished schoolwork. When I had looked over at him though and saw that he had the same confused look, I knew that he obviously had and his aunt knowing the real reason I needed to get home was news to him.
“Please I’m not stupid,” she said, realizing our confused looks directed at her, “I know your dad Gabrielle and I know that you wouldn’t straight up tell him that you were dating a hockey player since I know he was involved in the start of the feud,”
“Yeah,” I nodded, letting her know that she was right even though she probably already knew that she was.
“I’d hate to be the both of you though when you do tell him,” she told us, and neither of us really knew what to say next so the conversation pretty much ended there.
